I just played and submitted a Huge Monarch Domination win with what I consider to be a good finishing date.I am struggling with "go long" settlement tactic on the bigger maps. The distances are so far you can spend more than 20 turns getting there. There is so much space and the other civs are able to expand more before you can get there. You need strong attackers (archer/sword/horse) out front to clear or capture territory but that only slows setter production.
It strikes me that the bigger the maps are, the more you will need to win through conquest. In my win, I had 2 4-turn settler factories up and running by 2000 bc, but had simply run out of settling room early. I would say I needed to conquer 20% of the land to get up to the 66% dom limit, which is taking a bunch of towns. It lasted long enough that I needed to research Chivalry to create the fast moving knights necessary to finish the job.
RoP abuse is key. I was actually able to get a second RoP after abusing the first opponent (they must not have had contact) and repeated the task. Wipe out a civ in 2 turns and you won't worry about the cities flipping.
