MjMNES IV - A Fresh Start

It's annoying that nigh to none of my neighbours have noted their location in their cultural introductions, making me have no idea where to draw inspiration on religion or language. :/ Of course I might just be mistaken and blind, which happens quite often, really. I just wish I would have their cultures available to draw inspiration from when making my religion. Oh well. Culture incoming in this post.

Okay, to make things easier for myself, and to keep track of who's posted descriptions and what not, I've listed all the players here and their locations, as well as if they have done a description/overview or not. Remember, Tuesday is the absolute latest I need these by.

When you finish, I'll edit this post.

Sardinia and Sicily have posted their descriptions, as well as Dalmatia. I do agree Yui's Levant description is rather important to you all, but they seemed to get back without his, so, just do what you can. :)

He is in Greece!

Not for long, anyway. :p

I need these folks! I know a few of you have told me you will be getting them soon. I still need them though! Tonight PST is when I need them! 11:59pm PST is your deadline, if not done by then, I will probably have to NPC your nation, which would be horrible for the first BT!

Colour: PURPLE

Brief Description: Farmer/trader/fisherfolk happily splashing around in the mud!

Development: Civilization is birthed where there is enough food for people to do other things, and also a good nexus for trade. That is at the fork of the river. Reed barges can move up and down in the relative safety compared to open sea. This single blob will quickly grow, briefly being the most popullous area in the world.. however, following an outbreak of disease, Khambat will collapse upon itself in a bout of infighting and weak leadership. This period will last roughly 200 years. From this will emerge a much stronger more unified state. One with a strong singular identity. At least at the top that is. The muddy poor people will have as crap a life as ever an will have hardly noticed. What will of changed is that will one ruling family , greater objectives can be achieved.

Consolidating the agrictural floodplain of khambat, expansion will be sought for other prime estate. Trade links are also very important, with trade colonies springng up along the coasts as the traders ply their goods. Khambatii ships are the most advanced in the world. A cult of personality with the latest king and ruling body will develope, along with a feudal/caste system. Harnessing the muddy dances they will create a religon that all can embrace. All this goes to empower those who are in power to a more secure status.

Society: There is no class system officially (yet) but social movement is very restricted. Generally whatever your family does, you are born into. Be it a fighter, a fisher or a farmer. King Askar-Oolup Rewalla Ooniss. Askar is the name that passes on, the other bits are successful colonies/ battles etc that are added as a king is successful. The longer the name, the more successful the king, the most likely to be remembered by history (they hope). The priests who hold the King as God-on-Earth are the highest in society after the King himself. Females have equal status, there is no division.

Desired: Acceess to both Med and Red Sea via expansion as well as consolidation of useful agricultural land along the river.

Put mine as "Partially Done" or something, my civ name and a 2 sentence history has been posted, but that is it so far :p

Very basic stats etc have been sent :)

Location
Civilized Zone is in China, main hub in Beijing.

Culture

In Fu Kung Panda culture, emphasis is placed on warriorship (is that a word!?) and pride towards the land: to one's country, and to the Gods of the Sungtu. Being a soldier is considered the greatest in fact, especially in the army. Education is respected but it is more about physical than mental power. Gold armour is seen as the greatest gift the state can give you - the highest honour. Man is seen as more powerful than woman because of their physical strength, and women cannot be in the army.

An example of gold armour

Government

There are a board of governors, but no head lead. They are based in Beijing and have other smaller boards of governors in and around the different provinces of China. There is definitely a need to control these different boards within this head board (known as the Shifu warriors), and each province reports to the Shifu warriors once a week. The provinces have little control, they are mainly to report to the main state, who control the money, land, army, navy, education etc. I will ensure the board are part of the report at every update.

Religion

Buddhism as the main religion but culture is very accepting of others. There is a belief that the land and God are as one and one respects the land then God will respect you in return. The land is the second most important thing to look after, after the army and the navy. There is a shrine in every province that all must visit once a day to respect the land the province has provided for them and the goodness it gives to the whole country.

Society

There is a constant to develop and invest due to the brilliant land the country can utilise. (Part of the Western Xia Dynasty which basically looks to develop technologically explained partially due to the large army battles at this time, look it up on google if you need to, but makes sense).

Society has kind of been covered in other sections, but I'll let you know if I can get any more on this tonight (I need to do domestic things in the flat). I will update more later tonight if I have time.

Who's Sicily?

What is this peace you speak of? ;)
I have a feeling that I'm going to end up pissing off everyone in the Mediterranean.

Actually I see myself hiring people from your culture as marines and ship mercenaries. Also from the Dalmatia culture, and other maritime cultures, since mine isn't.

Hope you like getting preached to.:p

Cultural description inbound. I've chosen to use placeholder names for the areas around the mediterranean - I really don't think that custom civilizations would use the same area names such as Egypt when Egypt actually doesn't exist. :) The placeholder names will be written in {brackets like these}.

The Raka

Assume all these things as goals of my culture. I have no aspirations to expand in size, but that mostly depends on settlers' will that are beyond my control. I am in a little hurry, so forgive me if things are ugly or not very thought through.

Placement:
Carthage

General:
The Raka people is a culture of seafaring traders and assorted nomads/peoples from {Numidia}. The foundation of their capital, Ekdhan, happened as nomads and merchants founded a place to trade with the outside world. The culture is very spiritual in their cultural dependancy and regular use of music in different aspects of their society.

Economy:
(I'm honestly not very sure of what the Carthagese lived by other than trade, and I couldn't find it where I looked it up, but knowing that the Roman salting of the soil did huge damage to the city I'm sure they depended somewhat on farmland.) I'm sure they depend a lot on fishing, however, especially since the Raka is a seafaring and coastal culture. One thing they excel in, however, is trading; their effecient inventions in using clay tablets to draw symbols of wares that are to be ordered from overseas eases trade and allows for development of writing or even an alphabet. The original ideas of using clay tablets origined in {Egypt}, but was quickly picked up by the merchants and then adopted through a official symbol system, designed by the priests and approved by the monarch.

Religion:
Heavily influenced by the ancient Tyravian culture, the Raka believe in a divine family of three - a Father Sea, mentioned in several tales and in the Raka mythology often appearing as a sea serpent; a Mother Earth, which is heavily influenced by the local cultures as a pagan earthmother, showing herself as many other forms. Their daughter, Sdhedleva, however, differs much from the innocent child-god mythos with the Tyravians. The tales of Sdhedleva begins as she walks out of her mother as an adult, beautiful woman; and as with the Tyravian worship of her as the source of all things artistic and creative, so think the Raka of her. However, Sdhedleva is the main deity of the Raka. Her influence is heavy on Raka spirituality and music, which dominates much of the Raka cultural identity. The spiritual sphere of the Raka religion is very influenced by the local mythos of the peoples the merchants settled with at the beginning of Ekdhan's history.

Culture:
Music is very important to the Raka. There is music in most aspects of their society; most initiation rites are passed through some melody as in our civilization, but also there are plenty of sailor songs for the merchant ships, songs for the war march, and most of the cities' marketplaces have a designated area to musical players. An approved structure of music is the "dhavlävda", which follows the structure of intro-chorus-chorus-bridge-chorus. The dhavlävda is utilized heavily in marine affairs; there are plenty of sailing songs in this structure and compositions using the structure. There are a few renowned composers as well. The Raka also uses the forementioned clay tablets to write musical symbols with - a system that is very inaccurate, but highly developed for its time, resembling primitive notes. There are also musical centers in clay with the walls covered in those "musical runes", where anyone can educate themselves in harp or horn play, depending on their available money, of course. The idea of culture embraces their creative goddess, Sdhedleva, who gifted songs and fire to mankind.

Military:
The military has a heavy use of light cavalry due to the close cooperation with the local {Numidians}. There are always musicians in the army, usually within the infantry units, playing and singing.

Society:
The state is compromised by a monarch with heavy influence of a merchant council. Ekdhan was originally founded by merchants trading with the local {Numidians}, where the two cultures evolved the region to a trading post, then to a city. There is very close cooperation between the {Numidians} and the Raka. Regularly, a peasant or simple fisherman doesn't have close contact to the musical society, but there are public mass plays at market squares once each month.

Have fun blending our cultures, starting religions, economic, military and social goals, main and splinter states while trying to describe the resulting awesomeness to us. :p.
Also: Lots of Bi/Tri/Quinthesitic Headed Pantheons. Gonna be fun to see how many gods the Sademons adopt or how many scholars try to unify, split, or correlate different faiths to one another. :p
