MLG7: Another Race to Space

Hannibal the trader part 3 – 800AD

The Plan

Spoiler :
Well we had staked off some territory in the last set and this one was about:-

1. Get Great Library (for the CE getting a couple of GS’s for Academies seems key)
2. Carry on Rexxing (with the Great Lighthouse all my coastal fill in cities wouldn’t strain my economy)
3. Watch the Monty, Sury, Isabella relations. What I was hoping for was to join a dog-pile vs Isabella to get Diplo +’s with Monty. However if it was just Monty Versus Isabella I would be wary of joining in case she bribed Sury against me as he had much better military than me.

Report

Spoiler :
Well apart form no good opportunity to dog pile Isabella it want well albeit quietly

Expansion

Found Leptis, City 6 in 175BC

Found Thapsus in 50AD

Found Sicca in 200AD

Found Thaenae in 350AD

And my last city next to my capital a few turns later. 10 good cities is a nice sized empire but any further expansion will have to be via military or post astronomy.

Staking out territory aggressively last set had slowed my Research due to maintenance and heavily jungled cities but was now paying off as I got a nice large empire.

The other key event was getting the Great Library early (chopped in). The timing was crucial as if I haven’t rushed it my next GP would be a GP or GM from Stonehenge / Great Lighthouse in my capital delaying my academy.

However with beelining we got it built in time and the Academy was founded in 740AD. Here you can see my 10th city to the bottom left.

Research

Well I didn’t achieve as much in tech trading as I would have liked as it felt like Sury was choosing the same techs to research as me initially and no opportunity had come up to boost relations with Monty enough for him to trade with me. I was surprised at how well he was teching but the RNG’s had given him a nice capital.

Went Literature – Maths – Calendar (my outlying cities desperately needed Calendar to be productive).

Here I picked up Monotheism , Alphabet, Meditation, Archery and Priesthood in double trading with Sury and Isabella

The researched Currency, Code of Laws, Trade for Monarchy, Compass, Civil Service and Paper.

Only 1 quest which is the eminently forgettable Greed Quest. The only thing noteworthy in this screenshot is how Sury has initially placed his cities so that 1 tile is not in his culture and yes its a gold mine!!!

Only daft classic Civ mistake was not switching to HR as I was waiting for Civil Service and then forgetting to switch at same time as Bureaucracy.

So how are things looking – quite healthy dare I say.

Plans for next set

Spoiler :
Well ignore the fact that I am researching Education, I am going to suspend the Liberalism race and go

Metal Casting, Machinery and build Macemen. Then on to Engineering for Trebs and attack the very weak Isabella. Two main aims

Get some CR3 Macemen who can be promoted to Rifles +
Bribe Monty into the war to get our relation sorted.

We will then return to the Rifling Beeline (slipping in caravels at some point).

@Ralph
Spoiler :

Compared to others with the Great Lighthouse, you've got the best investment, 6 coastal cities.
I'm also surprised we both got the same amount of land and I didn't build any wonders.
Btw, keep an eye on one of your neighbors. ;)

Round 3

Round Plan

Spoiler :

straight forward
- Make my cities grow and start hiring specialists to rip off representation benefits
- Expand north
- Get the parathenon and great library, both of them of great synergy with an SE

Story

Spoiler :

On the diplo field, the round started with Montezuma dogpiling Isabella along with Surya. With my inexistent army, I ccouldn't do anything to help her. At least, she won't be able to pop religions. I want the other continent to have all the religions they can manage.

Rome started an acqueduct to pull off the hanging gardens. I got the horse whispering quest but I can forget about that, I only have 3 cities for now !

IW reveals iron in the capital BFC. Can start to build my praets now. To my dismay, Surya had already blocked me north. I need to get my settlers out.

Blocking off Surya first, I went for this city

Surya invited me to the war, but with only warriors defending my cities, I refused. That was probably a mistake, this guy gives you -2 relations hit when you refuse to help him

On the research field, I went aesthetics for the Parathenon then started currency for the roman forums. The capital popped a copper mine on a hill.

With stonhenge and oracle in my capital, I got another prophet. I just settled him in the capital. An engineer would have been better but a settled priest is not shabby when you are running rep : 2H,5C and 3 beakers before the multipliers.

See, I got wonderholic. The capital had already 4 wonders and I picked up the Statue of Zeus. Mainly, because it was so cheap. Being indutrious and having elephants, I could complete it in 6 turns. It was also for denial purposes, beating up Monty having the statue of Zeus would be quite nasty.

The other city was aimed to block off Monty. I was late to pick up both gems. Hopefully, I would get those dyes from Monty in the future. I left the cows south for anolther city south.

At this time, I put all my spy points on Surya. He and Monty are still warring Isabella, I need to get an army going and reclaim some cities from Surya. Peaceul expansion is nearly over.

Surya was the first to get alphabet. I gave him currency for it and earned some gold. Here's the tech situation at the time.

I gave Monty currency and polytheism for monarchy, sailing and meditation. The next turn, Surya discovered code of laws so I traded again with Monty to get calendar. We have many calndar resources around. Christianiy was discovered on the ohter continent like I was hoping but Surya got a scientist and popped taoism right after that.

I had literature on my own. You can't play industrious in a SE game and ignore the great library. Next tech was compass, we'll need to go visit the other continent soon. Surya came again asking me to join the war and I ignored him, I was about to go after him so I didn't bother to upset him.

Antium, my second city finished Parathenon and gave me yet another prophet, sent right away to the capital.

Now, I got some very bad news. Isabella lost Madrid to the aztecs. It seems like she's being battered badly. She lost Barcelona to the Khmer. They're gonna turn on me after Isabella. My plan was to let her die, declare on Surya and ask Monty to join.

My fishing village is being put to good use

And here, my final wonder on the list.

I was buliding praets intermittently, but now I can focus on building an army. My plan is working, right ? RIGHT ?

Well, I was giving Isabella more credit than I should have. She vassaled to Monty and Surya signed peace. I don't know how this vassal thing works now, after all the patches and the expansion, but Surya signed peace with her too and didn't enter a war with Monty. I'm quite sure I found myself in a war I didn't want back then in warlords.

Surya was also first to civil service, 6 turns before I got it. And guess who got the horse whispering quest ? Monty who have both horses and phants. I got another unlucky prophet in the capital. Both scientist and engineer had better odds, but the RNG decided otherwise. He just joined his fellow priests in the capital.

See, Monty doesn't know what the word "peace" means. I was monitoring him and unfortunately, I saw what I expected. A WHEOOH while his units haven't even healed yet.

My plan of attacking Surya would have to wait. I discovered civil service on turn 149, revolted immediately and started researching metal casting. Optics too, would have to wait. I'm going after machinery first.

Here's the economic advisor from turn 150

I'm nearly in the green at 90%, thanks to the settled priests and the shrine. My capital can pull off a praetorain every turn, thanks bureaucracy.

Afterthoughts

Spoiler :

I achieved two of my goals. I got the wonders I needed, I had my cities grow quickly and managed to get scientists running nearly everywhere. But I found my self blocked north by Surya. I realize now that I overdid it with wonders, I should have got more settlers out before completing non threatened wonders. The hanging gardens were not important and along with the aqueduct, they cost me a lot of hammers. I was clearly underestimating monarch AIs expansion rate. Something I seem to have forgetten while away from CIV.

Plan for next round :

- War is imminent. Survive the initial attack and fight back. Hordes of praets to come
- Playing nice with Surya and get him involved in the war
- Get optics and sail the world

@blid
Spoiler :

I see doom coming your way.
Monty has enough on his hands and Surry is annoyed with you.
You've got only 5 cities while both leaders have 10 or more.
Both also have longbows, so I'm interested how your game will progress.

@blid
Spoiler :
Your game is quite similar to mine. Monty is busy right now, so I'd like to see where he's gonna strike next.

sorry guys ~ RL has beaten me up lately and i've been terribly lax in my duty as sponsor here.

I'm going to DL the saves tonight and work on a chart for Rd 2. Please only play up to Rd 3 for now until i give a go ahead for rd 4.

i had a nightmare that people were up to rd's 4 and 5 in this thread last night

Still up at this time pholk ?
I hope your digging through the saves is going well, I was holding on my game waiting for the sum-up - so no need for you to dream about me

Actually, I am way slacking in this and haven't had any Civing in over a week

I will get at least part II done this either tomorrow/this weekend, will get 3 done if I have time as well. Now where was I........

^^ Same thing here...

I had computer problems, blackouts throughout the neighborhood and everything keeping me from playing.

so this is as good a chart i've been able to figure out how to post. I can't find any screenshots i take to post them, adn I can't figure out wtF i'm doing wrong ~

any suggestions would be appreciated. I have this chart and 3 graphs to post!!

So where were we?
Edit: Beware, i did get the event that reveals OIL if you don't like spoilers then don't look at my games till u get the oil revealing tech
Spoiler Round 2 :

I have no clue what my plans were,so i'm just gonna play ;)

We're the smallest civ in the world, and i get out of Revolt.

Finish archer in Persepolis and start a settler for city #3

Hut gives exp to my northern scout and IW completes a turn later.

Advance to classical era with IW, find iron nearby in a southern site and an event washes trade routes to my mine. Henge and Great wall both built in a far away land, I later find out monty built the Great wall.

next turn, MY FAVORITE ALL TIME EVENT HAPPENS!!!

There are only 4 sources of Oil on our continent. 1 that Surya get's, 1 that Izzy gets and 1 in the far north in ice. AND ONE IN THE OCEAN FOR US!!!! EDIT: there is also one for us in a jungle tile. (2 E of ivory tile)

Settled Susa

Judaism founded in distant land.

This city founded later:

Same turn, Surya converts to hinduism.

Monty declares on Isabella...

An event destroys one of my mines in cap. My highest production city is now my third city. >.< i really should improve my cap.

5th city:

Monty converts to Hinduism, and Mids and G. Lighthouse built in distant lands. I'm the only non-Hindu here.

Monty adopts Police State. Aztecan Pyramids. I thought it was the Mayans with the Pyramids...

I cancel my deals with Izzy as per Monty's request. Judging the scoreboard, it looks like Izzy already lost a city to him. Surya DoW on Izzy as well.

I accept the invitation
Also, if you look at the scoreboard, Izzy has lost alot of points and Monty is now the founder of Hinduism. I guess he captured Madrid. (can't tell as i don't have los of Madrid.)

Settle 2 more cities to end the turnset:

Empire:

7 cities and 3 more to go. I blocked of my part of the continent so i should settle the 3 and start expanding, the fun way! :ar15:

Spoiler :

The oil event is great, but it's spoiler info.
(I stopped reading after 4 + Sury.)

I don't know how others will handle this.
I think I'm going to avoid your posts until SM.
