mm16: Battle of Bejing-AWM-1CC

0: Our troops are ready to attavk another Aztec city. I go for Teoti, since it's the Hindu holy city and probably not as heavily defended as the capital.
BOB01.JPG

BOB04.JPG

2: Printing press is done, pick up drama in 1 turn even with 0% research.

3: Drama comes in.
Proposed research next:
Replacable Parts (lumbermills in our forests, more importantly leads to...)
Rifling(obviously str 14 is better than strength 12)
Sci Meth (obsoletes Great library and two monastaries, but leads to...)
Physics (The free great scientist might make up for the above mentionedloss by itself)
These four techs together leads to...
Artillery

Start Replacable Parts.

4: Charge the Hindu Holy city. Suicide a cat which wasn't a very good idea since it barely does any damage at all.
Then follows the grens with 75 % and 86 % chance of success.
Bad luck strikes and they both die.
From there it's just mop up and we get 215 gold from the destruction of the city.

I figure it might be hard taking another of Montys cities now, at least without losing a lot of troops.
I would rather bring our army back home for upgrades and reinforcement, then put some pressure on catherine.

7: RP-> Rifling
Set research to 0% again to get money for upgrades.

9: Ironworks->Cannon ( I slip in a cannon here to fill up the incoming galleons)

10. Cannon->Heroic Epic
I MM the specialists in Beijing to get the HE done in two turns. we now have three engineers and one scientists.

I have upgraded most of the obsolete units, and the next player should be able to take St. Petersburg and Moscow without problems.

Slight weed when upgrading a sword to grenny without promoting it with city raider 1 first.

Well the situation looks quite nice as the demographic show we are number one in production and and No. 2 in soldiers and have a tech advantage on our opponents. I am amazed at how tweaking a few things in the starting conditions can lead to such dramatic change in our fortunes for what is essentially the same game as mm15 where we were chronically behind in tech from the moment we met the other civs. Our city is beautifully managed and we get the heroic epic in 2 and rifling in 6. Will upgrade a few troops and send them off towards Kathy and Monty.

1560: Kathy is in for a big surprise as our five Galleon's carrying nine Grenadiers and for cannons and often her direction to face longbows and horse archers

Cathy's_surprise0000.JPG

1570: our troops arrived at Moscow which is pretty heavily defended. IT Kathy decides to suicide or access horse archers into our Grenadiers on a hill.

1575: bombard Moscow's defenses to nothing but I decide to wait one turn to use the cannons and finishing up in one.

moscow0000.JPG

1580: we take Moscow for the loss of 1 suicide catapult that I didn't have the funds to upgrade before taking off. I should've left in at home to upgrade because the cannons are devastating against longbows. We start with two city raider cannons at about 75 percent odds and after the softening the remaining cannons are at 95 percent and the Grenadier's are at 100 percent and we take the city without losing a single HP on a Grenadier. I think the power of a tech advantage in this game is just wait too great. Rifling is in and I upgrade a few muskets that I have been making and send us on the path toward artillery. I would usually avoid scientific method as it cancels the GL and monasteries but frankly a think this one is over and artillery could help speed things along if it's still going by the time we reach it.

1600: troops are at the gates of St. Petersburg and should have a much easier time than the Nazis had an WWII. Those 4 LB's must be quaking in their boots. In any case we have a good number of superior troops and it's just question a the making the rounds to the various islands. I would leave 1-2 low-level troops on each island to whack settlers so we don't have to be retaking territory.

Good luck, not that you will need it.

Fun set of turns and whoever follows me is going to have an interesting time.

We took 4 cities on my turnset. 2 Russian and 2 Aztec. We are first now in score and for a minute it looked like it was all over but the mopping up.

However on my last turnset, Monty showed Muskets in the last city we took and Liz has a boat off our coast with 4 knights and 2 xbows (two Galleons) by our Bananas. Our City has 1 rifle and 2 cannon (plus swordsman and something else) and is building another rifle. We may get pillaged a bit though.

I have a frigate by York slowly bombarding and a Galleon on the way with 2 rifles and a cannon. Our main force is by the new Russian capital ready to land but we can use some healing. We also have some remainders on the last island and one unit can promote to a medic which might be a good idea. Our losses are less then our resupply so we are short on boats.

Sorry for the brief report but I'm swamped in RL at the moment and have another SG to play.

Gotag

Its late here, so I'll make this a quick report rather than my usual long-winded-old-granny's-stroy-telling style.

First off, had an interesting time defending against Vicky's forces. Is this the first time a foreign power bring its troops on Chinese soil?

I upgrade our sword and warrior to riflemans, spending around 500+ gold. In the end, only one rifleman was needed. Vicky choose to go all the way to the south coast of Beijing, and load all her troops to the mined hill SE of beijing ... except that I have a rifleman stationed there. In fact, I had a riflleman or a cannon repositioned along the coast whenever she move the galleons pair.

Our herioic rifleman singlehandedly decimated all her troops, defending on the hill.

It feel damn good! :D

Of-course with Gotag setting me up nicely, I razed a few cities.

Starting with Russian city of Yaroslav (that is a way overkill)...

mm16-AD1660-Yaroslav.jpg

Then, the Axtec city of Tlaxcala ...

mm16-AD1675-Tlaxcala.jpg

When I thought the island is cleared of the foul infestations, Monty settled a city right at the time when the other city was razed at the old Russian site ...

mm16-AD1675-monty-new-city.jpg

:crazyeye:

It was of course prompty razed few turns later.

I waited a few turns to gather more reinforcement before taking York:

mm16-AD1680-york.jpg

And there I :smoke: by moving our troops into the English terriority heading for London without thinking. Immediately after I released the mouse button, I knew I should have instead use the galloen to transport our troops to London 2 turns faster.

In any case, here is the situation in London at the end.

mm16-AD1700-London.jpg

I have a gallon further south. This should be used to chain transport the troops that are currently on another galleon in Beijing.

I also attempted to take out the island city of Russia, Yekaterinburg with 2 or 3 loses. In retrospect, I should have leave it alone until w eget mor epower units.

mm16-AD1690-Yekaterinburg.jpg

These troops are now headed for Eygpt ...

mm16-AD1700-Thebes.jpg

As you can see Hatty is a smart gal. She blocked our landing site. I would suggest landing at the tile with the twon, and kill off the longbow south of Thebes. This waste us one turn, but it saves us the amphibuous penatly.

But if the next player feels lie it, you can attack the LB from the galleons. Up to you, the troops in the galleon are not moved.

Further East, another galleon is arriving, while two more galeons are picking up troops to reinforce our Eygptian campaign.

On the less interesting news:

We got a scientists and I merged him:

mm16-AD1665-scientist.jpg

I have also built us a drydock.

Enjoy!

Nice turns GF. Is that five cities you razed?
Sorry for bumping you, btw;)
And three turns left untill Artillery?
:ar15:

yes, that was 5 less cities. Firstly, Gotag set me up nicely. 2ndly, Monty settle a city right next to our troops immediately after I razed one of his city.

No problem on the bump, I know how it feels when the thread was seemlingly silent for quite a while, I am quite the impatient guy myself. :)

Yes, we would soon have artillery ... so you will have a nice time if uber build some arty for your perusal.

1700 AD (0) - landed our troops on the town, Hatty actually has another city (Memphis) just SE of that spot that isn't visible in Greyfox's last screenshot above.

1705 AD (1) - our happiness is 15/15, start Globe Theatre cause it's just going to get worse when we raze Egyptian cities too. While waiting for the siege crew to get set up properly, our troops burn the town down to the ground and destroy all fishing boats in sight. A bit of caution is needed, Catherine has a roaming galleon and I don't want to risk losing our troops

Meanwhile back on the other front:

1715 AD (3) - Artillery -> biology, with medicine we can grow big and Assembly line would just pollute us more. Took out Rostov. I thought it was Catherine's last city but it isn't. Our reinforcement transport fortunately finds what looks like her last city. She settled another city she settled back towards our direction when we weren't looking..

1720 AD (4) - Globe theatre is done. Start training artillery. Attack Memphis.

No casualties.

1725 AD (5) - sack Rostov. Russia is eliminated. Raze Hastings (again.) England also managed to sneak a settler off somewhere as she's still alive, how annoying. Back on the Egyptian front we are making more progress, here's where her other city on the island is - er, was.

1740 AD (8) - Burn Thebes for the loss of 3 cannons, pesky hills.

1745 AD (9) - You can run Victoria, but you can't hide...

2 down, 4 to go.

1750 AD (10) - Sacked Alexandria (the one tile island) by forced amphibious assault, fortunately there were only 2 defenders. We only took one casualty though. In the north I'm shipping troops over to Monty.

For those who are keeping count, I destroyed 9 cities this turn. The current batch of trained troops are headed in Monty's direction, we ought to go have a look at Asoka at some point though as he hasn't been touched.

Well I didn't have time to do detailed notes. Basically it was shooting fish in a barrel. I did not loose a single unit. Greeks were wiped out in 1812. Monty has a damn city hidden somewhere as he is still alive. Asoka is on his last legs as his capitol is gon and we have arty in the area. I must say I am surprised at how different mm15 and mm16 were. I will be away for a few weeks but then I wnat to start one on Emp. So I hope you guys are game. The key was, I think having the gold and being able to get the CS slingshot. That really jumped us out ahead in tech which is the main battle here.

Probably about 6.
