3.17 seems backwards compatible. The reverse isn't true though. It won't matter in this game, but in future games...I hope you like barb galleys.
The save is so strong I'd almost want to make THIS round "till the end" . I might play it but honestly it's going to be lower priority than some other looks (my "bad start" game(s), bulbing practice, maybe another shot at Sury LHC if I can stomach the imba setup). It's pretty fun to blast the AI to pieces though so who knows.
Cheers guys for the kind words about the save. I'll look forward to see how all of you handle getting victory in this game. I'm still running 3.13 but will likely upgrade soon. Hopefully, I will have a report up for mid week.
I start out checking relations. Louis hates us. Furthermore, he is the AI who has the farthest distance to having teched Astro. I decide he is going down.
But first; Prophet pops in Buddhist holy town;
Great, that nets us 20-some gpt.
Secondly, we backill music with this trade:
And as if we werent enough ahead already...:
I pop a GA and switch civics (we are now at war with Louis):
Look at this! We have steampower, and railroad. I wonder why the Railroad option is greyed out, toggle "show resources" and zoom out:
No coal on the entire continent!
Luckily, Louis saves us some trouble:
Thats one way to find coal atleast (talking findings, Buddhism holy city popped Gems in a mine).
Aaaand last pic, one of our captured Jewish cities. How I do hate the AP at this point:
We have taken four french cities (several o them has changed hands many times due to Louis' vast stacks o maces. I think I have the defenses up now, though), we have had peace ten turns, in which we grabbed Theology, 80g and 10 gpt as long as peace lasted. We DoWed asap and attacked again.
We are in a GA (1 turn let), so anyone who loads can change civics and/or religion if they feel like it. We have just teched Fasci, so we have a GG ready.
WW with Louis is ~250.
We have rather many jails and Mt Rushmore is available (with Fascisim, which we have).
We have not yet discovered SciMeth, but we have Assembly Line.
That's it for me, sorry for the sloppy report.

Playing my set now, got caught up in the LHC with Sury, lots of fun, and with the patch I have played bunches of starts to see how the barb galley thing is.
I think we have lost interest in this one becuase its such a blowout though. We will go for a tougher game next session (I hope, heh). Vale really gave us an "unloseable" position though.
I agree that the momentum has gone out of this game because of the dominant position. It makes things less interesting imo. Rather than up the difficulty level, as I've said before, I would rather see us take on some "bad fit" saves instead of the "good fit" ones we've been playing. Bismarck on medium & small = easy GLH + harbors? Pericles with copper in capital and a close, soft target? I've liked these two games a lot, but tbh I think these situations lower the difficulty a notch, *especially* when we're playing a best ball format. Some players may not capitalize on a given situation, but *someone* probably will, when we've got a crop of solid players.
I agree. If you take 10 players of a difficulty level and always grab the best save, it's the equivalent of a "monarch" player playing his absolute best game ever, start to finish. I say monarch lightly, as many of the players are better than that to begin with...of course the best balls are going to get out of hand .
Tbh though, I like that aspect of what we are doing. We are trying to showcase how to win effectively at monarch level. If we move up to emperor then we are trying to showcase how to win effectively at emperor level. The two have their differences imo. I would rather see us play some tough starts than to up the difficulty level. I've played a gazillion monarch starts (I don't finish many of the games I start) and some are definitely significantly harder than others. That's largely why I don't up the difficulty for my offline games: I want to master monarch instead of winning a % of emperor games.
I'm glad to hear you guys speaking on this subject... tbh (as I'm sure you all noticed), my save was easily the weakest of the round (two rounds ago, now). In my defense (and this shouldn't be a defense), I was totally thrown off by the strategy building up to it. It was a great learning moment for me, and it's been a lot of use to me. I've played it through a few times now, and I think I see how to maximize it.
But - getting back to the topic, this is a monarch game, and I'm interested in monarch strategies... I can win on monarch most of the time, but I get wiped out sometimes, and I want to make that not happen anymore
Then lets find a really tough start for MC III , and keep it on monarch?
We still need to finish this one off though, so play your rounds, OTAKUjbski/Bleys need to decide a Bestball friday afternoon... I suspect we will play to end from that one then.
I'll try to play and post mine tonight. I agree let's find a tough start for the next round. It doesn't have to be in the middle of tundra or desert or something extreme, but it should be a worse fit than what we have had thusfar imo.
I'm playing my game now, but most likely will not finish it today.....
My opinion is to stick to immortal ..... err... monarch Really, this was expected: all of the players in here could easily complete in Emperor or Immortal, so it is almost assured that the game will be pretty much played at high quality, and clearly above of the normal level of quality of the average monarch player. But the propose of this was to grab a niche of the players too strong for Prince and too weak for Emperor , so monarch it is.
i think our approaches in these games have succeeded in demonstrating solid play at the monarch level though. the GLH and peaceful settling we did in game #1 is something not all monarch players might know to do. same with rushing peter in this game and following up with a strong war vs. Monty.

Pick arid or cold and keep hitting regen until we wind up with all tundra and none of those nice commerce resources like the gold/gems I have in my version of a "bad start", either . Just the player and his capitol, and a lot of ice and seafood.
Silver located on ice hills with no possible food tiles are ok. In fact, they're recommended, as they will taunt the hapless player forever before they can make use of it, and will probably never get the commerce bonus <3.
