[NFP] Monopolies and Corporations Game Mode Discussion Thread

You can be annoyed as you want

Thank you! For both times you said it :P

but your notion of fun is personal and not shared with everyone

Heck, that was my whole point, that fun is not an objective measure, but many times is presented as such (this design is "fun").

Anyway, I totally agree that the main and logical point of such a big game company is to cater to what most of the people think it's fun for them, and also with most of the points you made, especially regarding some challenges that actually "feel wrong", based more on some poorly implementation.

BTW, I should be more clear about something: It's not about making it harder what I was talking about, but with more nuance and complexity in regards to how to achieve benefits. Personally, what I like is games with "check and balances", in which going too much into a direction gives drawbacks in other ones, and I find the fun in finding a sweet spot. When something is "Here you have all these benefits!" even when I do understand that there IS some balance in the opportunity cost, I don't find them much fun or sometimes the opportunity cost is really not that big or balanced. For example, using the great merchant. You can use some charges, and there's also a slew of them that were really not that good, so it's really not much a choice when using one to get a couple of envoys or founding a corporation.

In any case, this mode IS quite well designed. It has some logical limitations, but the main thing I disliked was that it adds a lot of yields for a game already overflowing with yields without some kind of yield counterbalance gameplay.

The civilopedia description mentions that a coorporation can be "put out of the market", if someone else controls more instances of the ressource than the founder... This "removes" the former corporation and allows the player with more instances to create a new one for the same luxury. I just wonder what happens to the products which the 1st corporation perhaps produced before? Do they vanish, too?

Very typical resource distribution, sea resources don't follow the "4 Luxury per Continent" rule, so they just spawn everywhere in the water.

Do you not get sea Amber unless if it shows up on a land continent?

But yeah, I'm pretty sure it's not worth trying to create a sea resource corporation, unless if you control the vast majority of the coastlines. Although I imagine that will vary heavily per map - presumably an islands or maybe fractal map will have more, whereas a pangaea will have a lot less.

Step 1. Play Phoenicia or England on Inland Sea map.
Step 2. Early war to control that only coastline on the only sea on the entire map.
Step 3. Congratulations! You now have a real monopoly of sea luxuries. Profit.

OK it added 2 prod and 2 food... but weirdly took 1 gold away
Well that shouldn't happen.
The code is written correctly, though:
Code:
<Improvement_YieldChanges>
    <Row ImprovementType="IMPROVEMENT_INDUSTRY" YieldType="YIELD_FOOD" YieldChange="2"/>
    <Row ImprovementType="IMPROVEMENT_INDUSTRY" YieldType="YIELD_PRODUCTION" YieldChange="2"/>
    <Row ImprovementType="IMPROVEMENT_INDUSTRY" YieldType="YIELD_GOLD" YieldChange="1"/>
Perhaps a Bug? or just a UI Issue?

EDIT: @Duke William of Normandy might be right there.

Alright, I've just used cheat map editor to see what all industries/corporations look like!
