[NFP] Monopolies and Corporations Game Mode Discussion Thread

You mean you didn't win a Cultural Victory accidentally even though you got at least 3 Corporations? SMH...

Well the game said I was either 10 or 12 turns away from a cultural victory. So it was very close. However I was already well on the way to converting every other civ to my religion.

With religious games you have to be very lucky, having multiple natural wonders is helpful, and then knocking out the first couple religious rivals early before they can spread, then building a giant army over time to go after the other two religions (assuming there are 5), hitting their weakest and most foreign cities first.

Seems a bit incomplete though. I was playing as Civ, and the game generated "Madame Luxor's Silken Finery" for me when i created a Silk Corporation.
Those were the list of product names, not the corporation names.

Culture Victory seems really easy if your civ has even a small advantage towards culture/tourism. I played as Egypt and France (Pink Catherine) and effortlessly (literally. I wasn't even trying) won both games half-way through the Modern Era.
Which is Pink Catherine?
There's Black Queen Catherine, Magnificent Catherine whose colors aren't pink (at least to me it looks orange), and Eleanor whose border colors are pink but isn't named Catherine.:crazyeye:

Magnificence Catherine wears a lushious coral, which is somewhere between Pink and Orange. :P

I'd probably call her... Shrimp Catherine!

Speaking of her, I just won my first monopolies game as her (seems lots of people had the same idea... it's a natural fit). I totally agree with the people saying monopoly tourism modifiers are way too big. I won a couple of turns after I discovered the monopoly improvement (or corporation?) becuase I had a few merchants sitting around waiting to do it. I won before I could even finish making my first product, lmao. I hadn't even met every civ in the world! I'm continuing the game a few more turns just to see what products actually do...

If Gold (the luxury resource) were added to the actual game outside of scenarios, then what names could we come up for gold products?

Golden Dream, King Midas' Touch, Croesus Unlimited, El Dorado, etc.

Gold Man’s Sacks.

Probably serves better as a corporation name, though.

That reminds me how "kintama" literally means gold ball in Japanese but refers to two roundish things of the male anatomy. Gold... Man... Sacks...? I'll stop.

These are pretty good! Here's the challenge:

Come up with four that do not violate existing copyrights.
How about Gold Digger? (obviously a golden shovel) :mischief:

Nubian Gift

Uncle Rich's Money Bags

Recession Maker/Economy Crasher

Can anyone work out the math to see why I only gain 340% extra Tourism although I monopolize everything?
This is a large map with 8 players, I killed 3 of them, now there are only 5 left (me and 4 other players).
Thank you.

EDIT: On a note, I think the % capped when I won a Domination victory and it stopped adjusting. I think it should be a lot more if I hadn't won.

At the end of the day, having monopolies tied exclusively to tourism just feels..... a bit odd? Bug or not, having monopolies grant "a vast amount of tourism" raises some thematical questions, at least in my mind.

Random thought: what if, instead of supercharging tourism, monopolies just granted a (obviously lower) % yield increase to everything - kind of like Lady Six Sky's LUA? That would kind of reflect the impact of monopolies and mega corporations on many aspects of society - from R&D (science and production) to influence on international regulations (diplomatic favor) to, yes, tourism as well. And, if we take it further - what if monopolies came with a malus?

Ok, one thing I've found.
- Trading away resources do not break Monopoly. Monopoly only counts the resources improved in your territory.
- If for whatever reasons you no longer control the minimum number of nodes of the lux you already have Industry or Corp for, you still keep the Industry and the Corp like normal. In the case of Corp, you can still make products.
I think Industries are not unique but Corps are, from the livestream VOD? For example, many civs can establish Tea industries but only one of them can establish a Tea corp?

The same can be said to Civ V's logic of "Different Ideologies can cause tourism pressure", isn't it?

I think the point is, basically, in V and VI, "tourism" doesn't necessarily mean "tourism industry" but more like "a meter for cultural influence and pressure". Especially when you consider that the winning condition of Cultural Victory is literally "Having more international tourists (others are following your culture) than other's domestic tourists (others are not holding up their own culture)".

I do agree that if the devs just went "cultural pressure" instead of "domestic vs. international tourism", we can all understand the game a lot easier.

I guess the extra Tourism simulates the unique products of a Civilization. Like how China was known for Silk, Venice their glass, and for Mali its gold. It's natural that people would want to go travel to these lands in the interest of these quality products.
