More display adaptor troubles. LOL.

I got it working anyways. Thanks. (I'll keep that one in mind if I have troubles again.)

I'm wondering if ATI Tray Tools is the culprit...

I'm trying the Omega drivers. Since I won't know how it goes until next reboot (I don't reboot very often), I'll post the results later.

My computer froze up so I had to do a hard boot. The Omega drivers loaded in without a hitch. (Actually, the hard boot is a good indicator of how the drivers will go under stress. I often have problems with them after a hard boot.)

heh....I think I pinpointed my problems.... I thought I was using the Radeon Xpress 200 series, but my DxDialog says I have the 1150 series...

I'm such a PEBKAC. :p

anyways, the Omega drivers are working just fine, so I'll keep them.

X200 and X1150 are based on the same chipset family. Problem exists in programs that can't identify correctly

Yeah, before I got the Omega drivers, graphics-intensive programs would freeze up quite a bit. And give me funny designs and colors on the screen. Then when I did a hard boot, the drivers would get knocked out. Or if I did a hard boot for any reason. Or even if the power got knocked out.

Since I got the Omega drivers, I noticed a slight increase in performance on some games.

I only have one problem, when I was switching the graphics setting for something, my computer rebooted, and the crash dump said it was due to the driver. But that only happened once.

I had the Omega drivers working, then I installed a Windows Update and it quit on me. Again.

Any suggestions? I doubt reinstalling will work again, but I'll give it a try anyways.

I swear I'm never gonna install another Windows Update again!!!

EDIT: Reinstalled but haven't rebooted. I tried to see if the updates could be removed but they couldn't.

Got it working by reinstalling.

I think I figured out the cause of my Windows Update Driver Problems.

Apparently, from what I read (and understand), the Update automatically tries to get the newest drivers. But, it keeps "updating" them to an old version. Which is incompatible. I remember with the drivers that come with this, if I go through the Windows thing, it says I have the newest. With the Omega drivers, it tried to replace that.

Would this be somewhat right, or is the Driver Update a separate thing?

EDIT: Did a bit of Googling. Someone had the problem with Vista and NVIDIA drivers. Seems like this is the problem:

Microsoft is really starting to piss me off now.

That link is old and has nothing to do with display drivers. If you're using hacked drivers like Omega then maybe you shouldn't be using Windows Update

2007? Not that old if you ask me, especially if my computer's from '06.

And it's a driver with chipset.

When I installed the Omega drivers, I noticed a slight increase in performance in games. And I always had problems with the regular Catalyst drivers. And since it's integrated I can't overclock or I might blow up my computer. :p

Omegadrivers aren't really worth using anymore, just stick with the default catalyst drivers.

Seriously, I've been following the driver scene since ~2002, and have 3000+ posts on driverheaven. The Catalyst package is solid.
Catalyst is solid for desktop GPU's. Notebook GPU's are a little worse off, especially old integrated ones ( X200 is fairly old. ) Plus if it works, why not?

I have problems with the Catalyst one on my "crummy integrated thing," as I'll call it. ;) Every time I did a hard reset or the power went out, I'd have to spend 6 hours to try to reinstall the drivers. It was crazy.

In Nova Scotia, the power goes out quite a bit. (Actually, we just got the power turned back on. The telephone pole caught fire and the transformer blew up. Luckily I got the computer shutdown before the power went out.)

Ouch. Is it due to long supply runs through open country combined with lightning strikes?

I'm in town, but it'd be considered "rural" compared to big cities. We don't have lightening strikes, but a lot of wind and rain and ice. And snow. And stupid pigeons that fly into the poles.
