Just politely tell them no thanks. They mean well.
For women it isn't a requirement and as for men, I don't think it is either just frowned upon if you don't. Has your friend already done some univserty yet, or is he leaving after his grade 12? Missionaries are only annoying when they dont get the hint that your not interested. My best friend is on her mission, she's down in Baton Rouge, she's been looking forward to it for years and I know she's smart enough not to pester people and to just take the "go away" hint and leave

The only time I was ever approached by mormons was way back in Texas...I politely declined their offers to join their church, and they promptly left me alone. I have no clue where you're coming from with this anti-mormon crap, but mormons are nice people, although I dislike their beliefs, which are quite frankly wrong, they are still nice people and are entitled to believe in whatever they want.
PS. To all you missionary haters, get a clue. The vast majority of christian denominations and offshoots say that non-believers will not have eternal life in heaven, so missionaries are just trying to save you from their point of view. Don't disrespect missionaries, because they are extremely noble people working for an extremely noble cause, and I will be doing some mission work in the next two years, and will be most proud and honoured of it.

To all you missionnaries, get a clue : non-believers doesn't believe in Hell or Heavens, and they highly dislike to be subject to inquisitions about their beliefs, and dislike it even more when there is people coming to their very house to annoy them with their propaganda.

OK, idiot, in fact you all are idiots. People that go door to door distributing pamphlets on christianity are NOT missionaries. Missionaries are people that go into poverty stricken communities, almost always ones that are christian at some level, and educate them further about God.
For example, in 2006 my church will be doing some missionary work in house-churches (people that worship in China in their homes because the government does not allow privately run churches), in poor areas in most likely the northern region, Manchuria. That is missionary work. We won't be going to peoples homes and telling them that they should join our religion, we'll only educate those who want to know. That is real missionary work, for the poor. Not harrassing middle class slobs in Chicago or whatever.
