Mormons

Well, Christians run most of the offices in the United States, UK, France, etc from the founding. Should Christianity be considered a civ?

If we start going down the road of including religions, we should change the name from civilization to "Religion". It would become a completely new game.

I kind of agree in a way, but who says different civs aren't going to share the same religion in the new game? Sort of like government. Also from what I've been hearing it's pretty much certain religion is going to be in the game. There's no way to tell how it will work, it might not be all that unpleasant. But I do hope, for the sake of the franchise, that they stay away from using real-world religions. I would imagine that they will, and probably you'll 'build your own' religion or something like that. Who knows, maybe you will even play the role of the deity (which would make more sense than ruling an entire civilization for 6000 years and pretending to be 'just a normal guy').

What I am saying is that the Mormons are a religion.

Last I knew, Utah belong to the United States and not to the Independent Nation of the Mormons. Sure the Mormon Religion has had an influence on Salt Lake City and the state of Utah, as would any other religion with such a strong precence in a single area. That just does not mean that they are a civilization unton themselves.

Actually in the 1850s... 1854 if I remember correctly? Anyway, around that time, the Mormons exoded the heavily populated eastern United States and moved north and east into the still Indian West. They settled around the area that is now Utah and seceded, creating a brief theocracy. It was very, very brief, the US took the colony back within the year, but they did exist for a time and they wanted to recreate it for a long time afterwards.

Regardless, I don't think they should be a civ and I think this is a rather ludicrous suggestion.

@frekk: I have no problem with civs have religion as a component. I just don't think that religions should be counted as a civ. I, too, hope, and believe, that they will stay away from actual real religions.\

@xanthippus: texas should be a civ by your criteria. It has a very unique culture and was self-governing for much more then a few months.

Exactly, and I don't think Texas should be a civ either. Neither should Newfoundland or the Republic of New England (which was centred around New York); or California for that matter.

They tried to form their own nation - sent settlers out from Kansas but the Americans sent out a bunch of cavalry units, surrounded the fledgeling civ, forcing a culture flip without firing a shot. But the Americans need to keep an eye on Salt Lake City before they are deposed!
