Movie-style ratings for websites

You know increasingly Britain is starting to seem like its going down the road of a police state, every time you hear about something like this with censorship, ID cards, and CCTV cameras, and things like that its almost always Britain. Will we have a V for Vendetta Britain soon? At first I was like nah it won't happen, but these people aren't stopping, they keep proposing this type of thing over and over again, and now they have the most CCTV camera's per population, their going to have the mandatory ID cards with all sorts of info on them, and increasing censorship, the censored Wikipedia just last week.

Nah. Once QEII bites the big one, King Charles will issue a decree making the use of electricity and eating red meat illegal.

Where is the censorship? If sites can certify as U/ 12/ 15/ 18 to a recognised standard - or certify sections of larger sites as U/ 12/ 25/ 18 - that gives parents the ability to lock the sprogs browser to only certified pages.

Just a tool for parents, I dont see the problem. If kids really want to get round it they will, just as film ratings are de facto advisory.

Websites already informally follow such a standard. G sites distinguish themselves as kid sites. Most sites will not post adult content. And adult sites are obviously adult.

Having a more formal system would not do harm if done right. I do not that the ISP level is the best way to address the problem. In order to ensure that no adult content is featured as part of the family friendly internet, ISP would have to pre-screen every website in it. This would form a very limited internet, and make the service largely useless.

I think something like an HTTP header for the content rating may be a good idea. It doesn't require any third party to rate things, but it provides a way for website owners to tell a browser or search engine the site target audience.

Sigh... when will politicians realize that the internet is not just some series of tubes?

There was an idea to give porn sites the domain .xxx that would be a decent idea I suppose, and then parents could block the .xxx domain.

They ultimately made the right decision in that you can't restrict "pornography" to an exclusive domain, no matter how many of Jerry Falwell's ghosts and Joe Lieberman prudes come after you.
