So I bought Civ V recently during the Steam sale. I have never really plated any of the CIV games before as I tended to lean more towards an RTS.

That said, I played a MP game against a group of 3 friends (who thinks he is a genius at all games). The "genius" managed to beat us in Game 1 using France and basically going straight up the Culture ladder. He basically out wondered everyone and was mocking us horribly saying it was impossible to beat. We played on Prince difficulty.

The second game I slowed him down some as the Egyptians but all in all once again I did not have what it took and he ran away with it. Keep in mind I have never really played the Civ series of games so I feel like I am a little behind the learning curve here.

While I would love a basic turn by turn method of shutting his mouth, I am content taking hints, or a basic do X, Y, & Z out of the gate to slow him, then S, T, & U to make it last..etc.

Any thoughts on this?

Don't bother with wonders. Build military and essential buildings. Get key military techs before him. Show him who is the boss.

If he builds almost all the wonders and still stay ahead of everyone, something is wrong for sure.

You're friend will mostly go straight for the technologies for the wonders and neglet the military technologies So if you have a technologic advantage over him he is screwed...

Go straight Ironworking, have 4 warriors ready to upgrade once you get iron, upgrade them, attack, gg? maybe.

Adding to that, if you fail at Iron working rush, choose liberty policies and ally one friendly culture state. Continue to build units, Using the liberty finisher Great Scientist to get the Technology that gives u either longswords, crossbow or knight, depending on your UU. This will surprise him greatly around turn 80

If that fails, go to university tech and rush buy one university to run 2 GS, continue military techs and use GS to pop the best available military tech you can get. Push him again........

or out wonder him at his own game

be eygpt, writing beeline, mon, scout, worker, GL
go lib then free settler, free worker, trad, wonder policy
maximise hammers and chop forest (need mining)
another settler or 2, worker
then iron, upgrade a few warriors
then hagia, and more wonders, finish liberty, back to trad, more wonders and stay safe with military (techs/ upgrades)

Hey folks, If Razzbuten new at Civ he probably doesn't know those shortened terms you're using
(GL and such). Don't want to nitpick, just saying..

Yeah if you have Iron, both swordsmen and their more powerful version, the longswordman are great.

tommynt: well mabye thats why he asks for help. ..To become a better player. Since one way to improve is to listen to advice from the more experienced players....

....learn to play! doesnt help him improve, does it?

qft.... If we all focus on helping a bit more than yelling "noooooooob" all the time the community will improve as will the overall skill level.

Maybe the leagues should give some training sessions. Something like 3v3 with one teacher and 2 pupils in each team.

I think that it is really helpful to yell at people for being "noobs" as well. I thought that is what the league was for? ;) teasing!

Anyone else looking forward to this patch? I would take some patch notes at this point.

Haha, at least there are enough people to yell it at the league :D teasing!

My opinon is this comes from a sort of unfair bias conspiracy.

I don't beleive that I am saying anything wrong here?

I have had 0 time to play civ lately kind of going crazy and thru withdraw.

If you want to irritate him, go for some harrassing, like worker stealing with horsemen, and pillage improvement. Building wonders can take a very long time without any improvement :)

Scout him early and steal the early workers, they hurt the most. Dont go for his cities too early, it could be hard to take them without seige units, go for his units and improvement instead. You will at least force him to focus on not building wonders and prove him that his tactic is NOT unbeatable. He still might win but only if he adjust to the situation, he will lose if he still goes for cultural victory.

Mohawk rush is an EZ way to beat him if you are playing on the same landmass:

Pls ready my post and the comments after it:

Basically: build warriors right after your basic building(s). Meet city states and get ruins for gold. Tech right to iron. Upgrade warriors instantly to Mohawks, who don't require iron.

Pattern: announcement is made for his first wonder built. Several turns later your Mohawks appear at his capital. He has no real army to speak of, he just built a wonder. You get his capital and a free wonder. :goodjob:

IF you are playing on different landmasses, I can recommend a different plan.
