MP8 - A Roman Tradition

I don't know if anyone else will join so I think we should start. If any lurkers are out there, this game is still open.

I thought it would be a good idea to make a list of important techs.
Top tier - Iron Working (Legions...researching now), Masonry (walls), Mathematics (SoZ, catapults), Monarchy (government).

Middle Techs
- Pottery (a couple granaries), Currency (marketplaces in core cities), Construction (aquaducts).

- After Iron Working, I'd go Masonry, then Mathematics. Hopfully we can get both Pottery and Masonry in initial trades.
- I'd prefer to get a Granary before a settler in Rome, with chops from the forest nearby.
- Try to explore a little bit of the western side of our land.

Roster
-MeteorPunch - just played
-ChuckDizzle - up
-Mathias - on deck
-eldar
-open spot

Got it. Does anybody else have any suggestions? I won't be playing until this afternoon. I will work on that granary, then do some other stuff.

Do you mean the east? or just stick with exploring the west.

Forget things like granaries (2 legions! 3 archers!), aqauaducts (3.33333333 legions! 5 archers!), markets, etc... And culture. Units, units, and the odd settler/worker.

I think I have to agree with this. :D

yep, ChuckDizzle...I meant East.

@eldar: when do you think we should get a granary in our cities? I usually try to have a granary before the first settler unless there is food nearby for the first settler to grab and build the granary there instead.

I think eldar was saying zero non-militaristic improvements, period. Settler/worker factory, if possible, would be only place for a granary.

Played two turns, but now I have a question.

Pre-turn-- I consider the implications of changing from spear to settler. However, I decide to build the spear, because I don't know what I'll meet in the east.
2950bc: Move the archer to see what I can see, and behold, blue borders. Gonna withdraw our units.
IT: Oh, crap. A German Settler, Spear pair move sw of the hill archer.
2900bc: I guess I have no choice but to declare war now. I get Masonry for Alpha+7g, They're still up pottery and CB. I want to pause to ask the team a question. Should I attack the spear/settler with our archer? First, they're probably heading towards the wines, and two slaves would be much better for us than a razed city. It's a reg. spear. I plan to wait until it gets off the hill. But what if it moves to the forrest NW of the archer? Is risking the archer worth the chance of stunting German expansion and getting a couple slaves? BTW, Berlin builds a spear, and I set production to an Archer, because I have a feeling we're going to need it.

Edit: Okay, I just used the combat calculator and our odds of winning if the spear is on the forrest is about 55%. If the spear is on the plains, our odds are 61% What's the call guys?

55% chance of losing if you attack now. I would try to get 2 things: 1. the archer and warrior surrounding him so you can attack first with archer, and follow up with the warrior if archer dies. 2. wait until they move and attack on a flatland (not hills).

Yeah, I was thinking about movint the warrior south, in case he moves to the forrest. I think we'll not get a better shot, because once the city's founded, the spear will be fortified. The warrior has a 63% chance against a redlined spear on the forrest.

Edit: I was by no means thinking of attacking immediately. ;)

The rest of my turns:

IT: Okay, spear moves north as I thought he would. I will commit our forces to battle. Say a prayer to the RNG gods and godesses.
2850bc: Archer wins with one hp left and promotes. We have 2 slaves. And I was worried.
2800bc: Nothing much happens.
2750bc: Worker begins to mine Bg SW of Rome. Slaves will work the one west of Rome.
2710bc: Rome builds archer, I set production to settler (6 turns). I'll have to bump science back. I think I should move the archer to the german front.
2670bc:
2630bc: Elite archer fully healed!
2590bc: See furs just outside german territory. We are on a penninsula!
2550bc:

Save and screenies below.

lurker's comment: Risky exploration :nono: but fruitful :goodjob:
You might want to post images under the format [ img ] *adress [ /img ] (with no spaces, obviously), so that they show directly.
Dotmap anyone? ... or well, I guess I shouldn't be the one asking, but I can't seem to resolve myself to be a placid, silent worker here. I guess I'll think it back again when you'll hit the bottom of the roster.

Two archers and a warrior: if we're lucky, enough to kill of the Germans right away :D

Good RNG.... :D

Great to have you, pindicator - things are just getting started.

After growth, Rome can do 2 turns at +1 fpt / 7 spt. Repeat 6+7+7 for another archer in 3 turns, then a 5-turn settler would complete just before growth to size 4.

I guess that evens out our earlier good luck, restoring balance to the universe and whatnot. :p

I forgot to point out what should be obvious: the Germans have at least 2 spearmen and 2 archers. Also, F11 screen shows Berlin at size 1. Without another food bonus, they cannot have built a second settler. I think they pop-rushed a unit.

Smack a settler down on the Iron ASAP. Soon as Veii gets its Rax it can take some of the military-build pressure off of Rome. Got it, I'll play tomorrow probably.
