Windows Sucks, it always crashes.... Anyone who uses it, must love looking at a blue screen all day long.

I give two thumbs up to Microsoft's developers :goodjob: :goodjob:
for being able to fix the thousands of bugs in Windows before they put it on the shelves, and then make you download a few hundred gigabytes worth of patches each year for 4 to 5 years, then they tell everyone that their not going to make anymore updates for the version of Windows you have, and of course you spent $250 for it. Imagine a half a million people that bought it for $250. That's 1.25 Billion Dollars spent on it, and Microsoft gets about half of that, which is $625,000,000. Poor Bill Gates, he's having an terrible time trying to feed his family. Especially with all those billions of dollars he has. I'm sorry you had to hear this from me, but you needed to know. Remember, Bill Gates didn't create DOS, he bought off a fellow student at Harvard before he dropped out of school with Paul Allen. Also remember that DOS is on about 90% of all hard drives, and Bill Gates gets royalties for each hard drive that has DOS on it. That means if Bill Gates spends 1 million Dollars a day, everyday non stop, it'll take him almost 137 years to spend all of his money, and that's if he doesn't make anymore money at all. You can do the math, 50 billion dollars, 365 million a year. Well actually it's 136.98630136986 years if you want to be technical, or a pain in the butt.

Thanks for hearing me out. Also, sorry for ranting so much.

1) Gates gives a crapload of money to charity, and making a stable OS is . .. .. .. .ing expensive.

2) I have never had issues with Windows that weren't my own fault. Windows would be unusable if it was as buggy as most other software out there

3) The fact that no other company has come up to challenge MS with a better OS shows just how good it is

4) OFF TOPIC

Not true... IBM's OS2 Warp that was made back in the 80s was unmatched by anything Microsoft put out until XP. Why haven't you heard about this? IBM dropped the consumer market for the commercial market... Real smart big blue...

Yeah, well anyways, this topic is in the wrong spot and should probably be located to off topic. I imagine it will be moved there eventually by a moderator if this topic doesn't die out first.

More like NT (the OS that "borrowed" code depending on who you ask from OS/2) or at least 2k. And so little copies of Windows are bought for $250, most (probably like 90%) are OEM copies that go for no more than half that. And MS supports their products longer than just about anyone else. 98 lasted until 06, you can't get updates to OSX without having to buy the latest version, let alone OS9 (which doesn't even have protective memory and pre-emptive multitasking if you want to talk about crappy OSs). And there are only 2 profitable divisions in MS (Windows and Office), the rest are big money holes that will one day turn a profit (looks at game division which has spent over $4 billion, they'll make that back within the decade;)) so its not like MS actually gets keep all that money (just most of it).

This guy must work for Mac. I've never seen somebody's first post on CFC in computer talk before. He probably gets a couple bucks for ever inflamiotry post of windows he posts on every forum.

I like windows myself. It's easy to use and supports more third party software than the other operating systems out there.

OS/2 was sort of nerfed by MS however, they were supposed to produce the graphics for it but backed out if I remember correctly. And they may have "borrowed" some of the concepts (the non-sucky ones anyway, I have developed drivers for OS/2 long after IBM stopped supporting it) for NT anyway.

But the OP was full of wrong info. DOS isn't a part of Windows anymore, that's why it's called "Command Prompt" rather than MS-DOS (which was what Win3.1 ran on top of, and Win95/98/ME were compatible with). You can download MS-DOS for free now anyway.

WinNT/2K/XP hardly ever crashes to a blue screen, and if it does it's most likely a 3rd party device driver to blame (I know, I wrote some, there's a function you can call [KeBugCheckEx] to cause a bluescreen, but if you crash in kernel mode the OS blue screens for you regardless).

This thread was in Civ IV general discussions, but was moved.

On-Topic: only ever had a blue screen with Windows once IIRC, and that was actually the fault of the hard drive (I think).

IIRC MS makes most of it's money selling Windows cheaply to computer vendors. If you actually buy a new computer with Windows on it then the cost for windows is something like 15 dollars. Also after windows ME which was insanely buggy it's quite rare to get a blue screen of death.

If you're seriously bothered by it though there are other Operating Systems

I'm sorry for putting this thread in the wrong part of the forum. Oh, I don't work Apple or any other company that makes an OS, and if I did, it would be a company that I have started myself. I'm not saying that I could make a better OS than anyone else. I'm just saying I'll do it a lot different than everone else is doing it now. I'm also sorry if offended your God Bill Gates. I know he gives billions of dollars to charity, but that doesn't make all of his programs perfect. I do like some of Microsoft's programs like 'Age of Empires 2', at least I like it. I did use Windows XP Pro for a couple years, but whenever tried to upgrade my computer hardware it would have too many problems. Windows XP had the least problems with hardware and software than any other Windows version. Next time I will not be so one sided in my posts, even though I am a person with my own opinions no matter if they are factual. I do get my info from the news.
I also know a thing or two about programming since I've been programming in C, C++, Turbo Pascal (learned it College to get my B.S. in Computer Science), Java, PHP, and Ruby on Rails. I also know a good amount of Javascript, and HTML of course. I used to program in Visual Basic 6 for a company that I did freelance work for 8 and a half years ago. I don't program as much standalone applications as I used to because I do more web design and web programming now. I'm sorry if we got off on the wrong foot. If we might start over and start talking about something we have in common , that great game we all came to talk about , Civ 4. Of course I had to rudely interrupt people talking about CIV 4. So, let's get gaming!!!

If it makes you feel any better. Windows is losing ground as the most prominent OS. It hasn't been the most-used server OS for a while now (that title is currently held by Linux) and your seeing more and more people switching to either Macs or Linux machines (I believe it's around 10% of the total desktop market).

Actually it doesn't. It means people that work for Microsoft will get laid off when more people stop using Microsoft Programs and Windows.

So maybe in 5 - 15 years, there might be more people who use an OS that's not Windows. Maybe up to 25%, but nobody knows. It's just something that time will tell. What if you couldn't choose which OS you could use. Let's say I couldn't choose Mac because there was only Windows available, or you people who like Window only could use Mac? So, we are lucky that there is such thing as capitalization and being a monopoly is illegal except in games, like Civ 4. :)

I can't remember the last time I had Windows crash on me. The total number of times I've had Windows (the NT/2K/XP/Vista line) crash on me is just a handful.

Support for Windows last quite a few years, not really shorter than other companies.

I know he gives billions of dollars to charity, but that doesn't make all of his programs perfect.
Similarly, the fact that Bill Gates or Microsoft have unfairly made billions doesn't mean their programs are crap.

In particular, note that Windows 9x/Me was basically a different operating system to the Windows today (derived from NT). It'd be like judging OS X based on classic MacOS (an entirely different operating system, that just shares the brand name). And boy, slagging off MacOS would be trivial if we could do that.

Typical Mac/Linux user
Actually, it's an atypical Mac/Linux user that rants like this. Most of us simply don't care about MS enough to rant. ;)

FWIW, while I have seriously bad feelings about MS's business practices I have a great deal of respect for the majority of their developers: the 'guys in the trenches'. They actually do a superb job, given management restrictions on them.

The last Windows version I used was Win2K. I don't recall that it crashed more than a handful of times. I quit using it, not because it was *bad*, but because I was upset with MS as a business, and because I found something better.

Mac currently has something like 7-10% of the market, and while true Linux figures are impossible to collect, it is estimated that it runs 5 - 10% of desktops worldwide. In the US, maybe less than 5%. (I've seen estimates anywhere from 3% [MS-funded studies] to over 20% [Linux fanboi speculations], but most unbiased ones I've seen seem to fall in the 5 - 10% range.)

I wish this worked properly, but it won't run in any virtual machine I've tried, and hardware that hasn't been included with a real Mac at some point generally won't work.

I can't remember the last time I had Windows crash on me. The total number of times I've had Windows (the NT/2K/XP/Vista line) crash on me is just a handful.

Same, I've had my Vista system up since January 2007, no crashes attributable to the OS in that time. My uptime in generally 1 month, every month after patch tuesday, I apply the patches, install any updates for the rest of my software/drivers, reboot, and I'm set for another month.

That, and most Linux users are proficient enough in any OS that they realize there really isn't much to rant about with Windows. Sure, there are some complaints, but that's why we're using linux.

I don't recall ever getting a blue screen in XP. I got one once on my new Vista system when I was setting up the new hardware and drivers, since then I haven't gotten any problems from the OS itself.

IMO, most problems with windows stem from users who are completely incompetent at using computers to begin with and they will run into even worse ones if they were to try to run a Linux machine. Let these people use Macs, then maybe Microsoft developers can devote more of their time to their customers who actually appreciate the products instead of coding training wheels into everything.
