MSMD: How to Create a Mod (video demo)

I'm new to this website and came across it while searching for good instructions on how to make a Mod for CivIV. I have to thank you and everyone else who helps with the ModdingWiki tutorials for their hard work in making sure everyone can Mod!

I've been searching for a long time for good tutorials, and I think I have finally found the place. I'm already up to "How to add Audio"! Many thanks! Free Mace clubbings for everyone!

after i edited the Civ4leaderheadinfo XML i tried to save it. Notepad++ then displayed this message: Please check whether if this file is opened in another program. i looked around and noticed that the file is not opened in a program that i can see. whats wrong? after downloading several other XML editors they all gave me similar save failed messages. how the heck to i fix this??????/?/?/

Unfortunately the videos that you posted don’t work, and as I see im not the only one that has a computer freeze because of them. Anyways congrats for the work you put in- too bad people cant see it

I can't find a program that can convert a .JPEG into a .dds. Can someone help me? Phillip II is waiting.

I just changed the end tag from .jpg to .dds

My PC seemed to recognize it, and its well old.

Btw can anyone help? I tried making my leaderhead but its just purple.
I followed the instructions down to the letter.

The only 2 reasons why I dont tihkn it works is because:

I had to manually change the file to a DDS and it has no proper icon
I did this for civ 4 vanilla (if this is the reason could u do a modding tutorial for civ 4 vanilla plz )

Purple graphics normally mean, that Civ can't find the model/the textures.
Check, if you have a typo in the ArtDefines. Maybe the path or the filename is wrong.

Yes i am indeed running Windows Vista Home Basic. Why? is this going to be a problem?

Vista has a security system, the User Account Control (UAC). This prevents modifying data in the programms directory, if you don't run the application with admin rights.
Search in google, how to deactivate the UAC, or copy the files to your desktop, modify them there, and copy them back to your mod folder.

I may be able to answer for loic, The J, as I'm having the same problem- When I tried to create a leader, when opening the game, there's no trace of it. I am running Vista, but I have admin rights to everything, and just in case, I have UAC turned off. I've followed the instructions exactly, and am almost 100% sure that I didn't make a mistake. What's wrong?

You're sure, that the folder is there, the edited files are there, and you're loaded the right mod?
Are the modifications in the XMLs still there, after you're loaded your mod once?

hey, kael. i've been following your vids and im in the middle of making my mod now! thanks! a software that i think is better than captivate, Jing. (http://www.jingproject.com/) also, is there a free equiv. of photoshop that allows changing file size (to 512 x 512) AND can convert to .dds?

cool, thanks. also, im running vista (ugh, i know it sucks) and i cant find all the files i need. i.e i go to custom assets- xml- civs- and it says nothings in there! and nothing useful is in the actual "assets" folder. just four folders that are assetsx0, -x1, -x2, and -x3 or something like that. basically i was using file from another mod until i realized it was the stone age mod which includes paleolithic and mesolithic eras. (no offense to the creator whatsoever, great mod in fact). so now im at a dead end unless i can get some assistance with stupid vista.

i go to beyond the sword- assets and then it just has the weird four files. and in the custom assets folder (which is also in the beyond the sword folder), there are all the folders, but with none of the files in them...

The original version, as you got it, without any modifications. It looks like you've deleted the files somehow
