[MULT] Pitboss Worldbuilding Challenge

I'm Iroquois, so I vote all forest/jungle. Infinite roads for me!

But seriously. One or two sizeable deserts, a few plains/grassland expanses, a few forests, and one sizeable jungle would be ideal, but I'm pretty sure this will work fine no matter what the geography is. So just find something that's not awful and we'll go with it.

That said, I'd prefer bigger seas over snaky continents. I just really don't like snaky continents for whatever reason...

As for naming, I've started working on a language. So I don't have city names yet, but I have potential city name components. I'll name the cities once they're founded, and their names will be based on their surroundings. But one question: do you guys think I should stick with weird-looking stuff like Ceinwy and Gwynysffreith, or should I anglicize them to Kinway and Guinysfirth? The former is more authentic, but it also seems a bit much.

...Ceinwy and Gwynysffreith or Kinway and Guinysfirth?

I'd say go for the more authentic ones. Afterall, they're how your people named them and we others can either get our people to try to pronounce and write them right or just invent new names for them. That's how it was done in the real world too, you know. ;)

There will not be no large oceans. Either small seas, or larger oceans, that's our options.

Have you worldbuilt before? Read a lot into these subjects or subjects pertaining to alternate worlds? Have any stuff like this we could read?

then larger seas. i havent worldbuilt besides that one instant. again did well, but paled in comparision to yours. i want to play thos so i can get some more expierence in it.

as for reading stuff i have read your loydon story. i have also read heerlo's into the future and the 2 mentioned stories tj hafer. i love alternate history as i have read plenty of scernioa(such as the well known axis winning ww2 and the less known holy roman empire centralizing). cant link you to them for now because im on a ipod.

TOOO CEEELTICCC. What if you spawn at the edge of a savanna? Jungle? Have you read Mark Rosenfelder's Language Construction Kit? If not, pick it up, it's a fantastic read.

iroqious have a spawn bias for forests,so dont crush his hopes. then again,in an iroqious game i have only gotten 1 forest and the rest jungle *insert troll face on thread*

I'm a linguist, so I've been studying the intricacies of language as well as creating languages of my own for years. So I know that language has virtually nothing to do with physical surroundings. It's going to sound how I want it whether they're in the forest or not. I see no problem with that.

But irl, languages in South America, Africa, and southeast Asia all got alphabets later on, so they are more phonetic. If I spawn in a jungle next to a desert, I can change the spelling conventions. i.e. Kenawe instead of Ceinwy; Gawanisford instead of Gwynysffreith. If it makes you feel better.

My last post gave me an idea, which you guys can choose to go with or ignore. To portray a more realistic linguistic distribution, we could each choose how our country/cities sound (i.e. keyn-wih) and give them auxiliary names for the first while. Then, when someone discovers Writing, they can choose a spelling convention, and all the civs they met will then take up that spelling convention for most of what they do. i.e. Superphonetic like most "Third World" languages; Celtic; Italic/Roman; English; French. Each civ could, of course, make slight variations, but it would be cool if 3 or 4 civs next to each other used the same letters and had lots of silent letters, while 3 or 4 others are highly phonetic and commonly use Qs and Xs.

Just a thought.

The issue may be the origin of the language, but we'll get to that at the end of the ancient era (when we name all our current cities and trace the origins of our city, before this point please don't name cities, you can generate names, but don't name them (just so we're on the same page)). I don't mean to attack you or anything, I'm just seeing a lot of European (specifically UK) suffixes and prefixes appearing. Changing spelling conventions, or even creating your own, would be an amazing help. I'm sure your culture will also diverge from European culture a bunch, separating yourself from your base civilization.

^Wut
Isn't that, like, the opposite of what you just said?

I really like the idea of language diffusion, once civilizations begin to meet each other we can introduce that concept and really add to the game. Cities can change names throughout their existence, mine sure will.

I'm creating a new set of maps now, I'll probably go in to them and single-handedly delete extra resources from some sections. There is WAY too much fish. I have no idea why there is so much FISH.

Yeah, the language and spelling convention diffusion idea is really cool! Until we hit that point (the end of the Ancient Era or when a met Civ researches Writing?) I'll probably end up just calling my cities the default name. As I'm not a linguist though I'm going to suck at thinking up a new language, but perhaps I can ask for some help from @Devutaren.

And glad you have the map thing (hopefully) resolved! Feel free to delete as much fish as you want, though; I can't get double fish through my Bazaars so there's no real point...

Only an extra copy of a LUXURY resource. Fish is a bonus resource. The map issue is not resolved, but I'm working on it. Just use default names, and once everyone researches writing (better idea?), then we'll begin the renaming an restructuring. The issue is that I may not be able to pause the Pitboss game. CPM, can you take 20 minutes to test out the system with me? (fishoak on Steam, find me if you can).

I do know how a Bazaar works ;). That's why I (jokingly) said there's no real point to having a lot of fish. Also, I have to head out to work so I'm not going to be able to help you test the Pitboss server just yet; I'll be back ~4:30-5:00 CST though if you still need a test done.

Sillsworth, it suddenly dawned on me what you're trying to say about naming. You pointed out how eurocentric we're seeming so far, and that's a good point. I, of all people, should know that. So maybe I won't go Celtic. I really like the North Atlantic, but if I find myself in jungle I'll try a language similar to Pirahã. If I'm near the tundra I might go more like Inuktitut or Kalaallisut.

sillsworth, are you still wanting me to edit maps? I generated a PerfectWorld3 map with standard resources and edited it slightly. If you want to see it I'll send you a picture of it, or post it here.

Totally go Celtic if you want, just not so much on the standardized Celtic suffix or basic sounds. Honestly, you should really look into the Language Construction Kit, it goes into amazing detail on this. I found a list of suffixes everyone should think hard about using before using, so we don't get too classic of a Medieval Fantasy Setting going on. It's not saying to -apolis's or -ester's, just try to make it less...English-y. The list is as follows:

Oh! Yeah. You.

Uh, post a picture. Are you happy with the resource dist.? Can you help me test Pitboss? Can someone?

I've been experimenting with Legendary Start. I don't really like it. We'll probably do modified standard or abundant then.

I'll help with pitboss if you want me to.

I found two different fishoaks on Steam, one from Canada, and one from the US. Which one's you?

Edit: Just saw your location is New York State. :hammer2:
Edit2: Steam says the fishoak I added was last online more than a year ago.

Edit3: Btw, here's a picture of the map.

That was the fishoak I forgot the password to. Add the other.

This map doesn't seem to have enough land. Or enough of a desert. I'm going to attempt more generation of standard.

I think I got you added now.
