I'm just starting out with playing in a team environment in multiplayer mode. Does anyone have any suggestions for good strategies overall?

I'm particularly interested about tech. Would be better for one teammate to research down one direction of the tech tree and another teammate a different direction? Or should they both focus on the same paths to pick up beelined techs even quicker?

i play only on earth based maps exclusivly, but online when ive got an alliance its better to team up the research (later half of game), but before it go solo and research seperately. research the top part of the research route, and the other player the bottom, AI researches techs in the middle (ish) so you should be able to trade to get them

You always research the same tech, this way you get better civics, worker actions, and units earlier.

If you want to know more about muiltiplayer you should read Gogf's thread here http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=176505

And remeber any game versus humans is always war, even if that setting is not enabled.

I'll usually research the essential military techs first. Like Bronze Working, Ironworking, and Animal Husbandry. It is critically important that all temmetes get a military resources early in the game. A part of the game I always overlooked before though was city size. After I know I can hold my own militarily if not take a few cities I'll beeline monarchy which allows hereditary rule. Now all cities can grow to thier health limit provided you provide an archer when needed.
