so whats the latest greatest music player?

windows media player? winamp? something else?????

I just need something for music, I have other stuff I use for video

I use winamp. Never had any problems so far.

foobar2000

Has anyone been following Songbird? I tried it when it was first released and it was really buggy back then

What features does it need? Windows Media Player will do if, like me, you can't be arsed to download anything new. Winamp is smaller and uses less resources. There's a whole bunch of other wonderful music players but lets face it they all do the same bloody thing anyway...

Foobar2000 uses even less resources than winamp in my experience ( 0% cpu and roughly 10mb RAM during usage, and thats after 2 weeks straight of it running).

Plus its quite cutomizable, albeit not point and click.

I use Winamp, don't have much problems except if the power goes out while it's active -- then I have to reinstall it. However, if you have AVG antivirus, it'll detect it as a virus. I hope it's okay to post the link to my blog post about it. Clicky

However, for videos, I very highly recommend VLC Media Player.

foobar. However, I highly recomend you to keep WinAmp in case you want to make a party. Equlizer and Fade Out/In (and other effects stuff) is not included in foo. However, foobar allows you to play a heavy game or use a heavy program without stoping, pausing and scratching.

1by1 has replaced foobar as my standard player, as i like its way of handling playlists better. I still use foobar for listening to streams.
But in the end, Mise is right.

Judging from the poor screenshots on the 1by1 page, foobar can order stuff the same way. Or am I missing something?

1by1 works by presenting a explorer window of the file system filtered to show only music files. By default, it plays all music in the current folder, even though traditional playlists can be used as well.
I'm sure that foobar can be made to work the same way, but i decided not to bother when 1by1 is set up to my preferences by default.

does it support last.fm software?

In my opinion, it doesn't really matter what program you use, whether Windows Media Player, WinAmp, iTunes, whatever. They all do the same thing, play music.

Actually it matters a lot. I like being able to play music while playing games and etc, so iTunes is out. I like a very cutomizable interface that I can make into something usable for me, so WMP is out.

In the end, it does matter. Each music player does different things differently, so you need to find the one that does them the way you want.

iTunes works fine while playing games for me.

It's just a music player, why do you need it to look pretty?

I can't see any reason why I'd need to use a specific music player because of what it does slightly differently.
