Ok, lets start right away with the settings:

marathon
Great Plains (with all goods mod by hardwaerevreag ;) )
standard
leader: elizabeth (though I am male, i think for an combined economy she is the strongest leader...)

my starting save and a photo is included...

The first time I have tried I have been bet up so clear, no chance...

How would you play this game? - I really want to learn from your know-how to manage it better next time....

attaching a save would be great, too...

Thanks

nothing just made in the game I have uploaded...

IT's just opening the worldbuilder and placing rice, pigs, and so on, if they are not placed...

IT's so stupid, if there are not all goods, I think...

this after all is a normal Civ save and no BeyondtheSword...

It is VANILLA

Edit: triple it - unbeatable language level ;)

Oh, vanilla, oops. :) I'm not even sure where that DVD is.

Anyway, I haven't played the Great Plains map but I know how it looks a bit. If you're not really surrounded by AIs maybe you could make a run for the Pyramids? I'm not sure how much barbs action you'll get since this was modified a lot over the different patches and add-ons, but on Emperor I try to locate copper/horses as fast as I can to protect myself. So Bronze Working first with Wheel (if copper)/Agriculture/Animal Husbandry/Wheel (if no copper) should be the way to go. I expect that you'll get at least one of these resources in your vicinity, so a trip to Archery won't be necessary.

my research way:

agriculture and animal husbandry first (no horse in direct near), masonry for stone... [got the pyramides and represent.], mysticism for obelisks, then bronce working and iron working, finishe up at around 500 BC, because my research level dropped to 50% by the third city, archieving horses...

I ended up building chariots crushing m,y economy by maintenance...

frustrated i attacked montezuma, because the others would have killed me attacking saladin and his allies - (Remember cities defended by warriors), who completely outnumbered me using spearman... (he had copper)

Build pyramid (hook up stone), then run representation+slavery+ SE (except for cottage spamming in the capital), and go for domination victory with axeman, maceman, then redcoat rush.
