My first impressions: Not good

Well, here, for example, is a scene from FfH of "empty" lands. Grassland, forest, coast, rivers. I think these graphics are much more polished and alive than Civ V.

You expect me to agree? That's a pic of civ 4, and civ 5 look way better than that. You don't like the new art style... that's okay, too bad for you. But technicaly it's two time what civ 4 was and personaly I think that for the first time they did something creative with the look of the game instead of just a bland semi realistic look.

how da heck do you tell how many more turns your worker has left to finish the improvement? in civ4, all i had to do was mouseover on my worker....

I don't expect you to agree, just to understand where I'm coming from :)

And yes, it's the style I have issue with. Not the quality per se.

Well, given that most of the complaints have been "the interface is bad", I'm really not sure how you're reading Civ4 strategies into that. And for the record, the interface is indeed objectively worse than Civ4. I don't think it's awful. But I'd certainly not rate it any higher than adequate. And, uh, I think you'll find that Civ5 is in fact the very definition of a sequel to Civ4.

I don't think you understand what "objectively" means.

Completely agree.

Same, except for the production queue. Unless I'm missing something, you can't do it right from the main city screen: you have to go into a sub menu. Also, you can't use keyboard shortcuts (ctrl for adding a new item to the top of the queue, shift to add to the bottom) for queue adjustment: you have to use the mouse and go back to the main city screen. Also! You can only queue 6 items at a time...seems unnecessary.

The look of the UI is clearly improved (especially if you like art deco, which I do). I'm still unsure of the usability, and nobody can be yet until they've played with it for awhile.

The graphics are pretty good but once blue marble is made for ciV they should be outstanding.

The rivers look terrible and need a lot of improvement.

My first impressions are pretty good actually.

A lot of work still needs to be done but the game has potential.

i have a crappy computer im just glad it can run on my computer. the resolution im playing at makes it seem like im playing like a mix between the normal game and strategic view haha.

good things ive seen so far in my first game. Despite being on chieftain (just to get a feel of the game) ive seen some pretty cool wars. The romans negotiated with me to attack the Iroquois who were theyre neighbors but i sent a few units over. I had a couple of spearmen and an archer around there but for the most part the roman legions were tearing thru the iriquois. Im very happy at how smart they handled the war but im a little concerned at how little resistance the Iroquois could put up. Eventually even theyre capital fell to an army of 3 legions, wiping out the Iroquois.

Im playing as Siam mostly just trying to get the city states to be my friends but i liked war a lot so far. Ill probably go for one of the warmongerers next.

Rivers?

I have to confess that I prefer the Civ IV graphics as well. The world there just seemed more varied and "alive."

It's not a big deal - game play is more important than graphics - but I have to say that I just don't see the graphics as a step forward.

The multiplayer UI is really crap. I'm sorry, but how much effort did they put into this? Civ 4 did it right, how could they get MP so wrong in civ5? I can't even tell if I'm joining a game in progress or if it's a lobby where everybody is just waiting for nothing. There's hardly any games anyways, but first join in progress game I do and the thing CTDs after my first move. I think the MP is broken and that's why hardly anyone is actually playing online, but I will have to test more.

Also the lack of animations just make everything so stale. I'm sorry, but it's not fun this way. I can't even admire the character animations in diplomacy. Turn the animations back on by default FFS. I'd rather enjoy a long drawn out slow game with all the bells and whistles than this crap! This isn't Starcrap 2, Civ is meant for people who have patience!

I agree with the production times: they are absurd. I can research two techs by the time I finish a Worker in the early game

I also feel that non-strategic resources are less meaningful. In Civ 4, starting near cattle or wheat was a god send, because when improved those tiles gave massive yields in food and/or production. Here, it takes me 14-20 turns to build a Worker, another 5-8 turns to build a pasture or farm, and all I get is +1 food. It's almost not worth the investment of time

Click on the worker. You should see a number on how many turns are left by the worker.

I agree, all you should need to do is mouse over the worker.I'm sure this will change down the road.

Based on some hours with the demo -- I'm one of the Customers of Secondary Importance here in Europe -- I'd have to say the following three things:

It's a war game. This could be because you don't get to do much else in 100 (not 150, as claimed) moves. But it seem to be all about units. Still, fighting is a lot more fun than in Civ IV.

I really, really miss pollution. There is no downside to anything you do, just build anything anywhere, except that it costs money. Which brings me to the third point:

It's all about money. You don't build stuff -- it takes too long -- you buy it. You don't have culture grow your empire -- it takes too long -- you just buy the hexes. You don't help city states -- there too far away -- you just through money at them. Money, money, money. I'm not liking that at all.

Again, this is based on the demo, so I'm willing to be convinced otherwise with the full version. So far, it is not as good as I had been led to expect. I think it is safe to say that only releasing the full version to North America and making the rest of the world wait for three days was not the best idea they've had.

Production times are ok, it's just that you will build way less units compared to Civ4
For example, you just need 3-4 units to conquer a city state

My impressions:

Good so far.

I'm only 20 turns in and I have to be going, but I thought I'd sound off first.

The graphics look terrible for me, but I'm running through Crossover on my Mac. Tomorrow I'll go ahead and try a dual boot system.

The game is slow...but that's probably because I maxed out the players to 21 other players and 28 city states.

The AI is dumb and just keeps on dying on King :( THey just don't seem to build many military units, I've not even needed a dozen military units and I've taken out France, Iroquois and 2 city states. And defended against Egypt. And no, the unhappiness from taking over all of these cities (up to 12 by t185) is easily manageable.

The AI needs significant upgrades methinks.

Sure, they'll upgrade the AI... by giving it more free techs, units, and gold.

I'm on the fence with the graphics (when comparing them to Civ4). It's definately crying out for a blue marble makeover, however.

My biggest complaints come in the form of keyboard shortcuts that have been changed or removed, and the laggy mouseovers I've been experiencing.

The game is good though - 1upt, hexes, it's all good. So far I like the gameplay. Definately need more time though before I start making some necessary tweaks.
