My Units_32 file with 51 unit icons added to it.

1. Exactly how do you install it?

2. Can it be used in conjunction with Kal-el's DyP mod?

Well what I can say this morning is...

It does seem very compatible w/ DYP. I have it installed and as I stated above it did shuffle ALL the matchings, so you do need to go into the editor and re match All units.
2nd after Zulus post above on wed. I decided to try another test and advance the ages in the scenario editor to see if I had any obvius probs... The scenario opened fine and I was able to build units etc. without any probs.
Now hold on... I'm not at all sure of what will happen later today when I actually launch my Re-edited scenario, and may not have advanced in the game far enough to know for sure till after the weekend. I will post my results when I have em though, anybody else gotten very far???

Units added:

Harrier
Jaguar Warrior
Conquistador
Rocket Soldier
Advanced APC

Futuristic 'Phyter'
Viet Cong

This is now the full readme for the file:

The units_32.pcx file controls what pictures are shown for units in the build queue. Each new unit requires an icon be added to that file. This version of that file has added in excess of 100 icons for you to use

Extract the file to ...\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Art\Units and confirm overwrite. Backup the original file of you want.

N.B. There is still an issue over the Leader and Army icons not updating properly when you change eras. It's not a major problem: the army and leader units still use army and leader icons, they just don't update that's all.

There are plenty of other icons as well, that I currently forget what there individual names are: BlueO's Amazon & Hi-tech units, various un-named tanks, and duplicate icons which vary slightly in appearance.

Excellent! And thank You for the elaboration on the problem such as it is. :goodjob:

Zulu - I made it to the industrial age as Egypt with your units_32 installed, but after conquering 3 civs in 5 wars I have gotten ZERO great leaders.

My next war is already planned, but wont be for awhile. Sorry! ;)

EDIT: And thanks for updating the file again. :)

Ok, I updated the file to include icons for several older units and I took out some of the duplicate icons. I also moved some of the icons about so that the tank, ships, aircraft, etc. are together. So you'll probably need to 'rejig' things in the editor.

N.B. This is a beta because with some of the new icons I might have resized them so that they're a little too close to the edge of the square, thus cutting the line. I'm not sure if it has happened (it's a bit difficult to tell without actually seeing if it crashes in game or not, and I'm a bit busy at the mo), so if you see a problem - post here.

Zulu - I started a new game as the Germans and just got a great leader during my first war.
Created an army with it. Both are era specific so far (middle age).

Will let you know what happens when I hit industrial age. ;)

And thanks once again for updating the units_32. :)

I've actually updated it to v.6 now, complete with some more icons for the DyP mod - but I'll wait until v.5 gets to 50 downloads...(lol)

Well Zulu's really cranking on these, over the weekend I tested the version 4 and it worked fine. The Armies still do not seems to change appearence as noted above but big stinking deal it work great otherwise. I intend to try v-5, do you think this will match up w/ v-4 fairly close or will I have to go in and re-match all of my unit icons in the editor? Great work Zulu!!!

I think you would have to re-match some because he mentioned moving some icons around in the pcx.

I have a sneaky feeling that the large size of the document may be the problem. Maybe the empty spaces too.

I am trying to get some feedback from a Firaxis programmer.

mmm...ran into a problem with the settler icons. I basically updated the file to include all the icons from the Double Your Pleasure Mod as one section in the icon sheet. As anyone who;s played the mod knows, it has several settler and worker units and thus the dyp icon sheet has duplicate settler & worker icons. However, I removed the extra 8 era-specific icons, bar one modern worker icon in the dyp section. Now, in the Middle Ages, one of the leader icons is shown for the Settler (when playing a normal game). Here is a pic of my updated icon sheet (v.7 beta), with the bit where the extra era-specific icons were outlined in blue, and the extra settler and worker icons outlined in yellow:

I'm not sure why you would be having problems with the era-specific icons. I tried using your units_32.pcx and all of my icons were updated for each of the four eras. Here are the requirements for the era-specific icons:

Settler:
If the unit's icon index is set to 0 in the editor and the era is Industrial or Modern, the index 72 is used.

Worker:
If the unit's icon index is set to 1 in the editor and the era is Industrial or Modern, the index 73 is used.

Leader:
If the unit has the Leader ability and the era is not Ancient, indices 66, 67, 68 are used, depending on current era.

Army:
If the unit has the Army ability and the era is not Ancient, indices 69, 70, 71 are used, depending on current era.

So, as you can see, there is still a bit of hard-coding in use for the era-specific icons. [Note: This whole system has been reworked for PTW and the hard-coding will be removed]

Ah-hah! That explains why the Settler didn't update in that last version: I was using index 464 as the Settler's unit icon. So: there's no point in having duplicate Settler and Worker icons. Which is quite interesting, because the icon sheet that comes with Kal-El's DyP mod does have these duplicate icons. I've never played this mod, so can someone who has confirm whether or not the problem I described above happens with the standard DyP icon sheet as well? Thanks.

btw, Mike - presumably the Leader and Army units have to be indices 47 and 48 in order for the units to use the indices described when changing eras?

No the leader and army work diferently than the settler and worker. They are based on whether the unit has the leader/army abilities.

How will this work then? Because you'll still need to specify which icons to use when updating through eras. The only way I can think of is if Settler, Settler Industrial Ages and SETTLER MODERN TIMES all had their own unit entries in CivEdit and you could specify which icons to use from there. Will that be the case? If it is, that would certainly be much handier :goodjob:

Thanks for answering my e-mail Mike. :)

We were a little baffled on this one. ;)

Funny thing is, I just hit the industrial age and finished the war academy.
The army build que icon is correct in that city. Industrial.

Leader:
If the unit has the Leader ability and the era is not Ancient, indices 66, 67, 68 are used, depending on current era.

Army:
If the unit has the Army ability and the era is not Ancient, indices 69, 70, 71 are used, depending on current era.

Zulu, try checking the icon number in your units editor.
Since I have no problems with your pcx, maybe thats the error.

I'm glad that its NOT the pcx, because I want to continue to use Zulu's.
Its a good one. :goodjob:
