Just thought I'd summarise what has been started in the Cities thread ... as the discussion has expanded somewhat ...

Cities
>Named by the player in the order of citizenship

Workers
>Roman Numeral eg. Worker IV
>After player name eg. fe3333au :D
>

Military
>Ram's Extended Greco Mythological Nomenclature
>Numbered eg. 1st Hoplite
>

Ships
>Class + Name eg. Curragh - Ship'sName
>

Couldn't you have put this as a post in that thread to stop things getting confused?

I like the idea of....
workers named after players
cities named after greek cities (using "fun" names)
units named after gods (or monsters)
ships named after sea monsters

Now my thoughts as cities are named in order of citizenship, I suggest that workers are reverse order of player joining ...

Also from the perspective of information leaking and control ... I would suggest that a straight numbering system reveals too much about our military strength

As to who names military units ??? ... don't know ... but like the idea of leaning towards a unique naming system ... but not too complicated ... I would adapt Ram's approach but exclude class as this is a doubling up ie. Hermes - Warrior - XXX and there is only a certain amount of text space available.

All ships should have a unique name and have an official naming ceremony (which the media is invited to) ... as to who names it ??? ... again I don't know but every citizen should have a turn ... or submit names to a vote ... however prior to whatever system for naming rights is initiated for ships ... :mischief:

 ... I respectfully ask the populous to allow me the honour of naming the first ship ... I have it in mind to make it a dedication to one of the longest (started on 22nd May 2004) and talented and interesting Civ-based stories ever to bless this forum ... Pax Romana by Vanadorn ... I would like to call our first vessel The Snarling Narwhal ... see post 1506 on page 76 :cooool:

EDIT - Reason for stating new thread is that it was titled Cities

and

All units will have to have the unit class in the name ... this is to not give false information with stealth attack and stack viewing ...

I like the more formal method for naming cities (although I think exceptions should apply)

But naming units can (and should) be much more open. As people have good ideas, they should advocate them – and if history is any guide… there won’t be much argument. So lets just keep something that strictly fluff… fluffy!

Not sure I follow ... we have already started with this system and fully discussed it numerous times

I like fluff fluffy ;)

A comment was made about staying away from strict numbering of military units, as this may tip too much to unsavory eyes... Would it violate the UN Convetions on Naming if we used random numbers along with the types?
18 warriors,
XIV Warriors,
Warriors8,

get it? The numbers have no meaning, except to distinguish one warrior from another.

That would not 'violate' anything except the integrity of the blood supply of any enemy foolish enough to oppose our directives

I know this is far from the most important thing on our plate right now – but I really want to see Warrior#3 get a name.

So I propose:
Ares Warrior - Butes

Butes - An Argonaut, son of Teleon.

Here's a whole list of all people in Greek Mythology (Gods, Heroes, Misc. People…)
Greek Mythology

Ideas for naval vessel

> Curragh - Angry Pandah
> Curragh - Rumble Teddy

As usual just ideas ... any others ... especially for our up and coming land army

Also ... I can see a bit of fun with KISS regarding the above naval options ;)

Great ideas gentlemen!

(per a quick AIM conversation with Fe...)

"Curragh - Trusty Guppy" it is!

I shall christen it next turn.

To reiterate some thoughts from above - we should drop the Ares designation from units - there's only so much room for letters. Plus, we've been referring to the units by their cognomen for shorthand.

Therefore, I propose the simplified version: We'll simply attach Greek names to units for our own use, and we won't 'rename' in a any way that would allow the enemy to track individual units.

When ther is a thread refering to Heron, the context makes it plain that the warrior referred to is the one (as of turn 47) near the Steely Hills.

Any objections?

Example: currently Ares Warrior Heron renames to Heron, but only in our internal threads. We don't rename the unit in the save - we don't want others to be able to keep track of where Heron is. Basically, I'm tired or writing out Ares Warrior Heron every time. Since we all know who Heron is, there is no reason to keep using the long form.

I understand what you're going for here Peter - but I think this would be MORE confusing - I actually did get confused briefly on whether you were talking about the city or the unit.

How about just going shorthand and calling the unit "AW Heron" in our forums - to make it clear we're talking about the unit not the city?

In game, the unit must keep the "warrior" part of the name, but we can drop the "Ares" designation if we need the room.

Just my opinion.

Possible upcoming warrior names:

Craterus

Antigonus

Lysimachus

Ptolemy Keraunos

Interestingly, they are all related to Antipater, which is why I chose them.

I would have to say that one warrior must be named Trish Stratus. :D I never knew that she had Greek Heritage. I am a big WWE Wrestling fan. I have been to the two Perth Shows that they have had.
