NavyDawg's Unit Creation Thread

The bug-man cometh. Well barring anyone making the Predator(which is unlikely) then I'd have to say the Omega Project has found it's Advanced Barbarian. That has to be the coolest alien life form unit I have seen. I really like the skin/scale texture and color. Thats one Bada$$ bug your building Dawg!

 that's a good one, I.B.

Yeah, I have to say that the bug-man is awesome! Where did you get the figure from?

The figure came with the version of Poser 5 I downloaded. It's in the robot file and is called the Helix. Looks more like a bug to me, hence the unit.

Bjorn, thanks for the link to the sound tool. I will try to make some sounds for this guy, but I have zero experience with that, so no promises.

Storm Grunt, I thought this might make a decent Barbarian for you. It should be out in a week or so.

I use that tool and Windows XP "Sound recorder" for 90% of my sounds. I'm sure a PRO like Vuldacon has even fancier sound tools.
I use those two and a fair bit of googling for the right sounds. Audacity can load most common sound formats and save them as wav files. In addition to a wav format, the final needs to be (or changed to be) 16bit mono 22050khz.
Audacity makes those sorts of changes easy. Sound recorder is easier to mix sounds with. For example, create a cool footstep for the right foot. Do another for the left. Then experiment with when they occur to match the animation. Keep a small stock of blank (silent) wav files to add to the front of sounds or between them to create the correct timing.
Non-looping animatons can have the sound be shorter (faster) than the animation (eg: fort, victory, death) looping ones (eg:run, attack) the sound should as close as possible exactly match the anim.

I use ScreenBlast ACID by Sony for all my custom sound making.... It's really nice since you can easily determine the EXACT timing of the sound (to the 100th of a second), as well as visually mix and match sounds... You can even adjust the volume for each individual sample.

In addition, you can use it to make custom game music and even for video editing (if you want to make any custom movies).....

Best part is that it only costs about $60 for the latest version.

Up next is a sci-fi Colonial Marine.:borg: I'm using M3 for this one instead of the PDM. He's not based on the Aliens characters 100%, but he does carry the pulse rifle and has a similar overall look.

Just make sure he uses short, controlled bursts in the attack animation

Didn't I give you the 16meg obj file for the colonial marine?

How about a trench coat wearing guy with an assault rifle?

I don't really know what's next just yet. I'm working on a sci-fi scenario using space terrain, so I might stick with some units for that while my interest in modding is still peaked. All the units mentioned in the above posts are still "maybes" on my to do list (although I'm not sure I have a good trenchcoat).

NavyDawg, are you the one that is considering making the Shaun of the Dead unit? That would be cool...
