Need help with city icons

I just noticed today that once in a while the icons for gold, production, and research (coin, hammer, beaker) appear next to the city's name on the main game screen. What does this mean?

I have only ever seen the "connected to trade network" icon, the unhappy, unhealthy icons, the defense icon, and the religious icons next to city names. I can't find it anywhere explained what the coin, hammer, or beaker would mean next to a city name. All my cities produce these things-- why would only some of them have the icon showing?

Having those 3 icons that you mention means that it's the top producer of said property (for your civ I think).
It was written somewhere in the Manual.

Hmm... then shouldn't all three icons be represented somewhere in my civilization? Yet, right now, only one city has the gold icon, and no city displays the beaker or hammer.

Bump, I'm interested in this information as well

It's a tie between cities.

Folks, it is great to be part of the forum but I strongly recommend reading the manual repeatedly. Once after you play your first full game, once after you play 5 games and once after each time you go up a level.

You note I don't recommend reading before you play cause I know no one will do it. Also quite frankly the game is so deep that there is no way to absorb it. Accordingly I read it every time I go up a level because I understand more after I play with it.

Keep posting but try reading the manual!

What does the little lightning bolt near a city mean? I've had it when the city had no power, and after when it had power ... so I'm unsure (and I'm too lazy to open my box and try to find it in the manual).

Are you sure you didn't have Three Gorges Dam?

No ... I rarely build that, very rarely.

In this instance I thought perhaps I had built something that *NEEDED* power, so I went ahead and built a coal plant thinking the lightning bolt would then disappear ... but it didn't. That's what really threw me.

Did you maybe capture the the three gorges dam? The lightning bolt should only appear when you have power to a City.

That big poster that came with the game (or Special Edition only?) has a nice chart of what all of the little icons in the game mean.

That's possible ... and it also explains what the icon means, thanks! Is there any easy way of knowing if a city NEEDS power but doesn't have it?

Try reading the foldout, too, which explains all of the icons.

I obviously need to explore my fold-outs more (or even "at all")! Thanks for the pointers.
