I'll still be around (I have CFC access at work) but can't devote any set time to actually playing, although hopefully I can get some SP in here or there.
or are you happy for a lurker to grab the save and progress the game? Not that I can actually do that at the moment ... but I might be available to spin the wheel over the week end .
I appreciated it, Ruff. You are absolutely welcome to join the team. However, I'd like to give mlineak and whosit a chance to play their turns. Neither has had an up in a while.
I will check the thread again tonight when I get home from work - If I don't see a got it from Bindamel I will download the save and play some turns late tonight
Ok sorry to post one more delay, but I am actually unable to play tonight. It turned out my husband already had other plans for us. I can play tomorrow after work though, I've told him I will be doing so. So this is a got it for tomorrow evening. I have the save
I'm up already? Ha. We, like, skipped most of the roster, huh? I, um, acknowledge my upness, but gimme a couple of days. Got a deadline to meet.
Anyway, a few rounds of boring turns will be a nice change from constant warfare. We're not planning to fight anyone else, right? Archipelago maps are definitely not my favorite, since I am a big fan of production, and production is scarce here.
Speaking of, I'm under the impression that we are going to use the large Arabian island as a production base, especially since we plan to build a space ship someday.
Oh, and if anyone else wants to dig at the save looking for bargain bin tech-trades as mlinneak suggested, by all means go ahead--I still don't consider that my specialty.
Go for it ruff. Make us proud. Return with your shield or on it. Don't fire till you see the whites of their eyes. The can take our lives but they cannot take our freedom.
Of all the souls I've known...his was the most (sniff) human.
Stand back everyone ... I know exactly how to handle this. I wonder if they have even heard of Blake's 7?
Blake: Greetings! As you can see by my voluminous sleeves, I am from the future ... Vila: No he isn't ... this whole space show has gone to his head. He is from the 1970s Jenna: Shhh, Vila ... let him speak. Avon: This is stupid! I should be the one speaking. Everyone knows that my ideas are the best. Orac: Most illogical if you ask me.
Blake: AND I AM HERE TO HELP YOU! (with a stern look at his so-called crew).
Blake: Obviously, you have lost your way. You are trying to recapture your history of a fine space faring nation, yet you continually bicker about who is the best ... wars or trek. Don't you know that it is a big bad world out there ... not 1 show for all, but lots and lots of shows. There are people stepping through shining rings, some in a living ship, some lost in space with a children, a bubble headed booby robot and a demented doctor ... not to mention others living on a moon that has been blown out of orbit or riding through time and space in a phone booth. Now that I mention time, there are also 5 lost souls who saw their world destroyed and were sent back in time to stop it. And then the alien lizards wearing super hot human skins turned up ... I am sure I have seen that girl somewhere else ... in a smuggling ship that is always on fire? Or was it that ring show where she thought she was a god? It has even got to the point where they are making fraking remakes of shows.
Tarrant: Where is he heading with all of this?
Vila: Fraked if I know ... you know ... I like that word!
Blake: Oh bugger it - no one ever listens to me. Vila - clean up this mess and I will see you in the morning.
Vila: ME! Why me?
Blake: Just take care of it and the ship.
And so Vila ... poor little Vila is thrown in the deep end (again!) and has to clean up this mess.
Q1: Why are we building a forge for 130 turns when the payback is only 1 hammer?
That is not the way to increase your hammer output. Railroads will help and we are heading in that direction ... but the biggest baddest boost can come from MINING INC. So lets try and land a Great Engineer so that we can incorporate mining inc ... it totally rocks!
Vila puts libraries in front of some of the forges ... Basra begins: Library (135 turns) Anjar begins: Library (135 turns) Khurasan begins: Library (135 turns)
... but in typical Vila fashion, he doesn't really have any idea about how to finish a job.
We probably should think about dropping back to slavery and whipping these little babies.
Vila also spends some time following up on the neighbours. It is good to see that they are mostly friendly but the bigger guys lead us in tech. That isn't good. Vila checks with Orac who suggests this trade ... Tech traded to Hatshepsut (Egypt): Scientific Method Tech traded to Hatshepsut (Egypt): Rifling Tech acquired (trade, lightbulb, hut, espionage): Democracy
... it is only Hatty, everyone else already has Scientific Method and Rifling so it isn't as if those techs are leaking out.
The cunning part of Orac also suggests that the espionage spending is rebalanced so that we can try to gain demographics on them.
Finally - Avon comes back to the bridge with some very worrying news. Look at this he says ...
After that, Vila is left to run the world as he sees fit ... moving a few galleons around, ferrying workers here and there, putting up a few windmills, replacing some windmills with mines and towards morning throwing down railroad tracks on high production tiles. He also sells coal D) to sitting bull for 9 gold per turn. He sells whale to Joao II for the 3 turns before it expires due to combustion for 3gpt.
However, his proudest moment is ... Diplomacy: Suryavarman II (Khmer) cancels trade of Gold Per Turn (11) to King Dork (Fanatics) for Corn
... where he saves the day by refinancing this deal to: Diplomacy: Suryavarman II (Khmer) trades Gold Per Turn (12) and Wine to King Dork (Fanatics) for Cow and Crab
Then, just before morning ... the event that he has been dreading all night occurs ...
Naturally, Vila gives him the gold. Mainly fearing his mighty power, his technology lead and his war ships. That might change in a few turns when the Dorks can field destroyers!

And as the Interceptor speeds off into space, a few parting items flutter down on the stranded Nerds ...
along with this one last comment ...
Blake: I thought I told you to stop at 400!
Avon: You foolishly trusted him
Vila: Joao took my gold and I had to finish Combustion ... only cost me 2 turns Honestly, what is the difference between 400 and 402!!!
Orac: 2.
Well, cool. I guess it is a swap, then, but I'll still need a couple of days.
Mining Inc. sounds good, but I'm not sure how we are going to get the Engineer. Do you know? Nice nerdiness, and color choices. I guess giving the money to Joao was the best move, but it's still a pain. He'll get what's what soon enough, maybe.
Oh, I'd also support a return to Slavery if it has not already been done. Maybe. I can't remember what we'd be leaving. Are we in Caste System? I wonder if that's better. Gotta look at the save later.
Anyway, glad to see that this is moving along again.
Rome is working on a Settler. For where? Probably the Spices, but I will send it to a nearby island just to grab more territory at our periphery. I'll build another.
We do not have a monopoly on Oil, but we do have quite a bit, and many of the AI have few sources, some none. Zara actually has only one readily available source, in a town near our borders. I don't do anything crazy, but I might see what our chances of taking it are.
I'm putting all our EP on him for now.
-End Turn-
Turn 403, 1786 AD
Khmer wants us to cancel deals with Zara. No.
My prime target (Hawulti) is a funny sight: A few Longbows, and several Airships in the same city.
We could take it. Fasil Ghebbi, nearby, has just one Longbowman. Hmm . . . .
I just noticed that we have Combustion but have not built any Oil Wells yet. Hrm.
-End Turn-
Turn 404, 1788 AD
I pay 8 gold to preserve our road and workshop on the oil near Najran. Damn snow.
I'm tearing down a village next to Mecca to make way for an Oil Well. Sorry, but it's a bit faster than trying to build in the Tundra. Plus, hammers for the Heroic Epic city. Also, I vetoed the Observatory for the moment. Build troops! Remove Zara's Oil!
Trade deals.
Joao: Cancel Gold for 16 gpt. Make Crabs for 19 gpt. Ha ha! Sucker.
Zara: Cancel Incense for 15 gpt. Make Incense for 21 gpt.
Hatshepsut: Corn for 6 gpt.
We're up by 15 gpt. Yay.
-End Turn-
Turn 405, 1790 AD
What the hell is with the demands, Sury? Don't make me destroy you! We are not adopting Organized Religion! He is not Pleased.
Mecca finished the Heroic Epic and builds a Drydock. Gotta have the Drydock.
Found Mar Sara. Fish in eventual second ring.
It is entirely possible that we do not have enough Workers . . . .
Tech sellin'
Sitting Bull: Give Liberalism for WM and 260 gold.
Sury: Give Chemistry for Divine Right, 450 Gold.
Boudica: Give Chemistry for 260 Gold.
Qin: Give Railroad for Communism and 770 Gold.
We can run 100% science for awhile now, and switch to State Property if we want.
-End Turn-
Turn 406, 1792 AD
Get Great Scientist in Rome. I start a Golden Age. . . . Ha ha, just kidding! I build an Academy.
That gives us 68 more bpt.
Run through the cities. Heh. We'll want to hire Engineer specialists in those cities that get Forges done.
-End Turn-
Turn 407, 1794 AD
Gotta stop here. I'm rather exhausted, and the turns take so long to play on my computer, even though it's basically a session of "hitting enter."
When we have oil (and the Drydock is finished), we should build a couple of Destroyers out of Mecca, maybe upgrade our Galleons to Transports, upgrade our Frigates if we got the Cash, and build/draft some Riflemen and go hit Zara across the face and take his source of oil before he gets a chance to connect it. That will make him easy pickings down the line. We can do it. We would be fools not to.
I do not think that I can play more turns this week for this game.
