Year 1923 - Update 22.
Global Events:
The minor Sioux-DC crisis over Iroquois lands is resolved peacefully.
DC suddenly leaves its diplomatic conservatism pursued for the last few years and declares that it withdraws from the DU. It also declares that it will do its best to suppress world-wide terrorism and signs a defense treaty with Ireland.
As DU and Incan forces start the attack on the final outposts of Brazil, the forces there surrender without a fight. Iago III was put under arrest, and Brazil is occupied by foreign powers. Negotiations as to the future of Brazil are yet to begin – however, it seems likely that, even if Brazil is not divided, its colonies will be lost. However, ten more Brazilian divisions seem to have went into hiding or otherwise escaped. Madagascari agents confiscated two atomic bombs (+2 A-Bombs for Madagascar).
(-all Brazilian military)
In Ireland, full democracy is instated. Albeit there were a few riots in Ulster demanding a referendum, it seems that most of the rioters were from the Army of Ulster or its legal equivalent, British Ulster Movement (don’t ask me for the abbervature...).
In Britain, jet plane research begins.
Burgundy in flames...
(see below)
(-2 Burgundian divisions, -6 French divisions, -1 French air wing)
SDA (Scandinavian Democratic Alliance) is formed by Finland, Norway and Sweden. Oddly enough, Scania was not invited, neither was it interested.
All’s quiet on the Egyptian front – fascists are trying to regroup, while the Arabs prepare to cross the Nile. A large pro-Arab guerrila group appears in Fascist-held Egypt. Rumors are, Libyan forces are preparing to intervene in the conflict. It would seem that Egyptian Fascism’s days are numbered.
Remaining Brazilian troops in Africa capitulate.
Baghdad Riots are over. The MDA (Movement for Democratic Arabia), a non-violent pro-democratic organization, has been formed.
India starts unprecedented military buildup. This leads to panic in Pakistan’s newspapers, along with Indir’s speeches (see Random Events).
First solar power station goes online in China.
Oceanian conflict expands. After Neville’s suicide and the resignation of several government members over a scandal caused by Germany’s announcement that Oceanian government is to blame for Brisbane and Jakarta (an unknown person, claiming to be a secretary of the president, made it worse by saying that the German claims are correct and Oceanian Secret Service is to blame), NZPA decided that the time is ripe. As the Battle for New Zeeland raged on in the air (allegedly, several “volunteer” air units from Comintern nations assisted NZPA as well), NZPA activated its numerous cells in Australia, causing rebellions throughout it. Soon after, several military and civilian radio stations were captured, and calls for revolution begun. The Oceanian army failed to react due to the communications being cut. It is believed that five divisions worth of men were smuggled in through the Oceanian blockade, as the unidentified submarines continued to wreak havoc on the blockade. And finally, a new source of “manpower” was found. Promising universal suffrage to Oceania’s women, the NZPA soon formed ten volunteer “Amazon Divisions”. This allowed for NZPA to secure several beach heads. They even captured Sydney for a brief amount of time, but were pushed out into the countryside.
(-5 NZPA divisions, -2 NZPA air wings, -4 Oceanian divisions, -1 Oceanian air wing)
But Oceania COULD have survived this if that was all (and was likely to turn the tables, too). But it was not the case. DC Admiral Franklin van Rusevalt, a Burgundian immigrant, has led the DC Fleet to a masterful and sudden campaign in the Pacific Ocean. In the crucial Battle of Papua New Guinea, his use of aircraft carriers (and having a superior air power in both numbers and technology) led to the total defeat of the Oceanian Fleet (unfortunately, it was not crushed completely and managed to withdraw to Australia before taking much more losses) and provoking a mutiny in a pretty big part of what was left of the Oceanian fleet. Splitting up his fleet, Rusevalt proceeded to gain sea superiority in Australasian islands. The land invasion was not as successful, though, as Oceanian forces prepared strong coastal defenses during WWI, and farther improved them in the beginning of WWII. However, after heavy fighting, beach heads were secured. Sometimes during the campaign, Papua New Guinea itself was invaded by Russian forces, who acquired the support of native population and had slightly better success, taking the western coast. Java, meanwhile, was utterly crushed by Oceania’s forces. Finally, PRG-Indochinese forces secured the Malay peninsula and managed to take Atjeh and Singapore. There, however, the population is not very friendly.
(-11 Oceanian divisions, -25 Oceanian task forces, -2 Oceanian air wings, -Entire Javanese Military, -14 DC divisions, -10 DC task forces, -5 DC air wings, -3 Russian divisions, -1 German division)
Random Events:
In Russia, a private company started building offshore oil platforms in the Persian Gulf (+1 Economy). Russia is now the primary petroleum-exporting nation of the world.
In India, a new, fascist party is gaining popularity. It is called National-Socialist Indian Party (“Nasi” or “Nazi” as it is called by some), and it’s leader (Indir Neru) is making popular speeches, in particular, about the necessity of invasion of Pakistan.
Spotlight:
Burgundy in Flames.
“You will suffer until you give us independence.”
- attrib. to General Auvergne. 1923.
The wave of violence in former Burgundy and in PRG has finally led to real warfare. Burgundy’s ragtag force of veterans and volunteers has secured Brussels. Albeit quite a lot of BLA’s remaining supporters were found out by the Volksabwehr, Brussels was successfully occupied, and in the urban fighting, France failed to retake it. Other riots took place soon after, inspired by this victory. Generals Petran and Auvergne allegedly arrived to Brussels three days prior to the uprising.
PRG, France and Occitania declared martial law in the Burgundy region. Albeit the German army is yet to enter the conflict, specially-trained anti-partisan “Ordnung” squads spread out in Burgundy, rendering many partisan operations ineffective so far.
German fleet has intercepted and destroyed several unidentified vessels, supposedly carrying firearms, supplies, terrorists or BLA soldiers. Attempts to board them failed.
