Story
Life went on as it did everyday in the state of Sabah. Slowly and surely, it was beginning to prosper as merchants began coming in to sell their wares, and take whatever was available, which in turn brought in money and valuables into the economy.
It was good. And Muzzafar could rightly say that it was all through his own efforts, that the former little refugee settlement of Jesselton had grown into a bustling city of 8000 people, with proper buildings instead of tents. Roads were slowly making progress through the jungle and the few completed parts could bring in for wealth to Jesselton and its surrounding cities.
The only downside was that the ideographic writing system hadn't caught on. It certainly was rather difficult to memorise the many characters involved but he saw it as the only practical way to enhance the education of his people and unify them at the same time. Perhaps it was time to actively promote the writing. On his annual address, the whole population of Jesselton was there, all 8000 souls and while few could listen, many were willing just to clap and hear what their friends had to say. Word would spread. And so, Muzzafar began: -
"People of Sabah! We have gone through much in the past 15 years and we have prospered. It is thanks to many of you here, the founding fathers of Jesselton and the Dusuns of the Interior that we have achieved what we have acheived now. In all these 15 years however, we've kept on distinguishing ourselves as Malay or Dusun. Not once have we referred to ourselves as Sabahans except when stating our citizenship. Perhaps the word 'Sabahan' should now describe what we are, and not just what nation we live in.
I have a dream. I have a dream, in which all people in this nation, be they Malay, Dusun, Sinhalese, Japanese. Whatever they may be, whatever religion they may worship, and whomever they be, if they are citizens of this nation, they do not refer to themselves on their own ethnicity, but as a citizen of Sabah. An impossible dream? I don't think so. Perhaps it won't happen in my lifetime. Or in my son's or grandson's lifetime. But I swear, if the people are willing, then it shall be.
As an update to everyone, I have decided to send 10 battalions of our troops to train under the Tokugawa Japanese so that they may further improve their skills and when they return, they can teach our own troops and bring back wonderful new things from foreign lands. Our colonies in the east have been established and prospects are good there. The Tokugawa Japanese have even agreed to teach us on how to use their special fire equipment!
We will learn much from this, people of Sabah! But I tell you, we will learn more if we all unite and throw away our ethnic differences. Remember, we are not Malay, or Dusun, or Siamese, or Javanese or Sinhalese. We are Sabahan!
Remember the ideographic writing system we've been talking about? We would like to proliferate this knowledge so that a Dusun and a Malay can write to each other. Even a person from a far away foreign land can understand us as long as they understand this system of writing. This writing, the Sabahan script shall be in use in parallel with the standard Malay writing system until the transition is complete. All official documents will be transcribed bilingually for several years until everyone can write the new script satisfactorily. Like what we have done before, it will be hard. But I believe we can do it. Do you know why? Because I believe in my dream. I believe that we can unite for a just purpose. And I believe that the Sabahan people have a bright future ahead of them!"
As the cheers of the crowd rose and fell like waves, Muzzafar stood there, proud that his people have done so much and could do so much more...
