The Sejm would go on for several more days, and during those times only minor issues were brought up. Zygmungt could tell that by now everybody in the room was impatient. When he announced that he has no more issues to debate about, one member of the Sejm finally let his frustration out.
Your majesty, if your precious time may allow so, we would like to know more about the recent
incident and its aftermath.
All eyes were on Zygmungt now, all of them unsure how hell react to such a question. None of them, however, expected his response.
Dear senator, would you be so kind enough to outline for us the respective powers of the legislative branch, the executive branch, as well as the purpose of the Sejm?
The man didnt give a reply, for it wasnt necessary. Zygmungt was saying that how he deals with the traitors is his own business, and not theirs. He was also right in that a Sejm is used to propose establishment of new laws, not to discuss about execution of the laws. Zygmungt answered for the senator after waiting for several more minutes without an answer.
As you all must be thinking, yes, Im implying that what the executive branch does to criminals of the nation is not a relevant subject to talk about in a Sejm. Before protests were voiced, Zygmungt raised his hand. But. It warms my heart greatly to see the level of concern all of you have for Poland, even when it means stepping out of the boundary. Although it is unnecessary and unorthodox, I will explain to you all the recent actions that I have taken under the power that you all gave me when we formed this parliamentary government.
All the senators and sejm members sat back down, satisfied that theyll be getting an explanation after all. Zygmungt continued.
One of the first action Ive taken as a parliamentary monarch was the cutting of diplomatic relations with two of our neighbours. Apparently, many of you disagreed with my decision. Some went much further than just voicing their opinion. Before I go into that, however, I suppose even with a royal prerogative, all the citizens of Poland deserves to understand why I did that. First of all, I was under the impression that Poland, the land of golden liberty, much rather prefer having a Prussian democratic state than the tyrannic HRE. Of course, this was a civil war, and we can have no voice in the matter. Technically, HRE is still the legitimate government, so we cant openly announce our support for Prussian government. Cutting ties with HRE carries with it two possible implications. If the Prussian government emerges victorious, we could claim that we were supporting them the best we could. If HRE emerges victorious, we could claim we were doing our best to maintain our neutrality while appeasing the Prussians. The situation is similar with Ottoman Empire. I have been contacted by several nations concerning a possible war with them, but I understand that it is not in Polands best interest to war with them. Cutting diplomatic ties with Ottoman Empire was the only option to show that Poland will not betray those nations to the Ottoman Empire.
A number of people in the room can be seen nodding their heads while Zygmungt paused for a breath.
Unfortunately, not long after my decision was made. A number of men made it clear just how much they disliked my actions. This you all know. Some of them used to be close friends of yours, and former senator or Sejm member. At that point I had to ask myself. Why did you bother to agree to grant me the royal prerogative back in the first place? If you cannot keep to your end of the agreement, should I keep mine?
The room was dead silent at this point. Many thought their worst nightmare was about to come true. Zygmungt proved them wrong once again.
I did not have an immediate answer to this question. After some investigation, however, I arrived to a conclusion. First of all, it would be erroneous of me to think they represented everybody present in the Sejm. Secondly, I found that those men were puppets, and not truly loyal to Poland. Many of them have received foreign funds and promises of support should their attempted assassination succeed. These criminals will be dealt with accordingly with the law. But now I have another question. Are they the only ones with such intent? Could there be more conspirator that is hiding amongst us? Although it is against my better judgment, I believe the answer is no.
Everyone in the chamber was visibly relieved, but some of them changed their reaction upon hearing the next words from the Kings mouth.
Unfortunately, however, in order to justify my belief in all of you, some actions must be taken. Rest assure, nothing akin to what happened in Muscovy will happen here. Nobody will be killed without a second word being said. Seeing that the Sejm didnt share his humour, Zygmungt continued. Instead, what will happen is that a team of financial inspectors will go about randomly selecting some of you and investigate your ledgers. They will not pry into your private life, nor will they blackmail you with what they find. The information will be strictly confidential, and any attempts to bribe or blackmail these officials are seen as treachery against the crown. Of course, since you are all loyal subjects of Poland, you all have nothing to hide. Is that correct? Only some portions of the room voiced their agreement. I do not blame those of you who have took the wrong paths in the past. What I care about is the present. After the Sejm is over, anyone who is guilty but is willing to come forward and tell me the truth privately will be pardoned from his or her previous crimes. This you have my word. The enemies are trying to pick us apart, and I will have none of that. The inspectors are but a safeguard. It is my hope that they never find what theyre looking for.
Zygmungt waited a while for this information to be processed before continuing.
Now we must ask ourselves, however, of the nations behind the conspiracy. Polands policy had been a peaceful one, even amidst all the ongoing wars in Europe. Evidently, that cannot be continued, for two reasons. The first reason is to punish the nations whom incited this incident. More importantly, if we want to preserve peace in our homeland, we cannot wait for the battles to come to us.
Zygmungt would not let the Sejm have a voice yet, and continued with his speech.
I will announce to you now just what is it that I am doing, since youll find out sooner or later. First of all, Poland will officially restore diplomatic relations with the Ottoman Empire, due to a change in circumstances among the diplomatic stage. This announcement was met with cheers, especially amongst those that owned a business. Secondly, I officially declare that a state of war now exist between Poland and the HRE. Tensions have been great between our two nations, but we have always struggled to work toward a peaceful relationship. Evidently, that almost became my very undoing. HRE will pay for what it has done, both to its own citizens and to Poland. We were enemies in the past, and fought many wars. With Gods blessing, this will be the last, and liberty can be spread to the German lands as well. Last but not least, however, is that a state of war now exist between Poland and the Tsardom of Muscovy as well. There are many reason for this action, and I will go over the most important three. First of all, Muscovy is a dangerous and dishonourable neighbour who disregards its treaties. They have broken their NAP with Sweden, therefore we cannot trust them anymore. We cannot afford to let this threat exist. Secondly, Muscovy has very close ties with the HRE. By entering a war with HRE, Muscovy will likely become involved sooner or later. Rather than waiting for them to strike us, it is best for us to preemptively strike them. Lastly, we have all heard the gruesome stories originating from Moscow. The Tsardom led by the deceased Nicklaus is no more. Poland can no longer tolerate a kingdom who rule by installing fear into its subjects, and whom torments its subjects without reason as well. Poland will not be invading Muscovy with aims of rebuilding the great empire of the past. Although some territorial changes is inevitable, we are not campaigning to absorb the entire Muscovy. Our true aim is to spread the wonders of our liberty to their oppressed citizens, and free them from the shackles that bind them.
Silence enveloped the chamber again, and again it wasn't anybody's fault. This was a lot of information to absorb, after all.
Senators and Sejms, it is without doubt that in the near future, Poland will face some of its greatest challenges encountered ever since its re-founding. I fully believe that we can conquer these challenges, and bring Poland glory unseen since many centuries ago. However, I cannot do this by myself. I need all of you to stand united with me. Only then, can we lead Poland to greatness.
Later when Zygmungt was leaving, loud noises of applause trailed him as he walked toward the exit.
OOC: Any feedback about the stories? Like how plausible they are for instance or any place i can improve upon. I really don't know much about Poland and how in-character the charcters in my story are...
