NESLife V

Not gonna lie... Neptune's Pride with Iggy and Terrance, Kerbal Space Program, absolutely stunning summer weather (almost 30 celcius, all the more appreciated after a month of constant cloud and rain) and last night catching great live music at a pub with the girl I'm interested in :o :)

This evening, barring interruptions, I'll get an update posted finally.

I wish I would be so powerful and rich that I could say:
You have disappointed me for the last time! I am flying to Britain and sitting you on the chair by force!

:p

Sadly (and luckily for the world), I don't ;)

Ah, Kerbal Space Program... I haven't seen a game that addictive since Minecraft, especially since I finally got a rocket to orbit the Mun and return to Kerbin... Now, if you excuse me, my superiors at Mission Control are commanding me to design a Mun lander now... :borg:

You can't actually land on the sun, I think something happens before you can, and even if you somehow get past that, it's not solid.

Instead, how about planning an expedition to change the orbit of the moon? You can do that if you hit it with enough velocity.

So? Update? Pretty please? With sugar on top?

I'm so stressed out here :S

Yeah sorry - I've been meaning to update pretty much every day. Don't hold your breath but I'm on it! Its embarassing, as I really wanted to update rapidly for the first few eras.

I did have RL stuff, but honestly, a bit burnt out and overwhelmed also. As in pretty much every NES I try to run :o I will have to find some way of managing the number of new species per turn... I mean, maybe just an arbitrary limit, but that means everyone rushing to post evolutions after the update, without taking time to think it over. So I don't know - any suggestions on that are welcome!

Just pick and choose the ones you think are the best.

Be the cold, heartless hand of evolution! Some things just aren't reasonable mutations, don't have a niche they can effectively realize, or are simply less competitive than other creatures. If you have no major predators that would be harmed by spikes, for example, a spiked herbivore that is otherwise identical to a non-spiked herbivore would go extinct, because it cannot compete given all the energy it wastes growing spikes.

There are plenty of things you can do to reduce your workload, especially in an NES like this. :D

And you can always only draw the most successful creatures leaving the normies only as part of the written update.

Like this.

Nonextinction=80% of everything goes extinct.
Extinction=99% of everything goes extinct.

Tweak as necessary.

:scan:

To be fair, that's a slightly misleading presentation of the facts. Yes, 99.99% of everything ends up extinct, but each distinct species still lives for a certain period of time. Everything that's not one of the miniscule percentage of life forms that are around right now is extinct. :p

Considering the mechanics of this game, we have a tendency to make species based on 'good' mutations. We don't design the 'bad' mutations (species based on deleterious mutations simply do not appear in real life, as their reproduction for long enough to become a distinct species is so improbable as to be practically impossible). However, even good species with positive mutations don't always survive long enough to become significant or leave a noticeable fossil record, due to bad timing, bad luck, or competitors who had even better adaptations.

What I mean to say is that while Terrance's suggestion of killing off 80% of all new species each turn is a bit extreme, having a higher extinction rate isn't a bad idea.

Daft, what is your drawing limit? How many species can you draw between updates? 10? 20?

get a co-mod to help with the workload. Lots of peeps would love to jump at the chance to have their name associated with one of your games- instant NESer cred.

lurker's comment: From my experience the problems that co-modding compound isn't worth the questionable amount of work it alleviates.
