Hi all,

I was browsing the web the other day and I happened accross a new 4X game in development called "Endless Space" (www.endlesspace.com).

The game is a turn based Moo 2 4x style game that looks slick as anything.

There are some screenshots here:

It's not often I get excited about new 4x games as they are usually not on a level as professional as th CIV series but this looks like a serious competitor for the Moo2 crown.

(I was banned for maknig a thread about this last night which was subsequently lifted after I sent some correspondence to the Civ Fanatics 'contact me' address. PLease don't ban me again - this is a genuine thread by a genuine 4x enthusiast).

Kind Regards

Boygor

I have to say it does look cool and it reminds me a little of homeworld, one of the best games I ever played....combined with 4x game would be truly awesome....we shall see

The feature list does read a lot like MoO2. If the devs manage to address its few weak points without ruining the good parts...

I suspect that letting users (basically anyone) vote on the game features is going to backfire horribly when (or rather, if) this gains popularity (and maybe even before then. People are all too often dumber in large numbers. Although it does have some pretty neat features, but I really hope it isn't only multiplayer.

Seems intresting :)

Wait, i didn't see their page mentioning multiplayer. Did i miss something ?

I think that mutliplayer is mentioned. The game looks like it has got a simultanious turn based system :)

I've been looking for a real successor to Moo2 since about 1995 so I hope i'm not setting myself up with some unrealistic expectations...:crazyeye:

I joined their forum yesterday and I can confirm that it is NOT only multiplayer. If it was I wouldn't be interested.

Thank god. I got superexcited about some indie game a while ago and got disappointed later when i found out it was multiplayer only.

My dearest friend, I too am an enthusiast of the 4x genre, for which I would like to talk to you about an exciting new oportunity for you an your family:

Its called Give me all of your money. It's an exciting new program based on the 4x genre were you give good ol' Orson all of that precious cash.

It works by recruiting friends and family members into sending all of that heavy, smelly, burdensome and unmarked non sequential bills to Orson. You recruit two members, and they in turn promise not to call the authorities on any of us, cos' we are BFFs. This is by no means any sort of Pyramid scheme, that would imply there's an advance planning on my part, which there is none... so it's more just of a Pyramid pyramid there.

This exciting new opportunity will of course not be tampered at all by any of the handsome and very intelligent moderator staff, since I have incriminating pictures of all of them wearing furry costumes. I kid of course (I don't, The J is dressed up as the cutest chipmunk of them all).

Anyways... send cash to Orson damn it.

4x for life!!!!

Umm, ok?...

Agreed (except for the 1st 1´10´´ of the vid). Signed up and will see how it works out. ;)

I suppose a lot of devs these days want to attract with eye candy. I can't remember the initial Civ V trailers but I would assume a similar approach?

No, the Wadsworth constant usually applies to game trailers, but in this case there was over a minute of... something, and then a few pictures of the game. Worst. Trailer. Ever.

I've never heard of this :) Time to hit google methinks.

Edit - ahhh ok I get it. Good point.

I agree that the trailer was sort of weird....

Galaxy looks shines good, this game seems to have fixed travel lines between systems. Not seen any species shots yet

and rather hopin it not goin to be tooo complex

So if you preorder this, you can play the alpha. I've played it a few hours now and it's pretty good. I don't think I've played enough yet to comment any more than that, but it reminds me of a mix between sins of a solar empire (in the way that travel between solar systems works) and Masters of Orion or GalCiv.

Anyone else try this out?

How/what is the combat like? I've been trying to get more details and info out of a friend who bought it but she is too absorbed in playing it to say much, apparently it is extremely good already.

I also preordered it and I must say it is pretty good already :). Very polished for an alpha.

The combat is also pretty good but it needs to be balanced to really shine (as this is alpha there is no balancing yet). You can outfit your ship with different modules (offensive, defensive and utility) There are different kind of weapons (like beams and missiles) and different kind of defensive modules to counter the weapons (like modules to make you more evasive and anti missile charges) The different modules do kind of have different tech trees so if you know which way your opponent is teching you can try to counter him.

As for the combat, it works like this. You have 3 rounds (plus 1 little pre and post round). Each round plays at a different distance and because of this different weapons are more effective. Each round you can play one card that gives your ships a buff. The cards have different types like offensive, defensive, engineering, support. The opponent can do the same. Some card types will counter the opponent card type. If this is the case that card will give an even greater boost and the other cards boost will not be in effect, this can really turn battles. So if you know your enemy ship layout you could predict in which round which card he will play and try to counter this.

you can play one card that gives your ships a buff.

It all sounded great up this part, then it fell off a cliff. That sounds like a terrible system, I was hoping the combat would be more like Sword of the Stars :/
