New Beta Version - March 1st (3-1)

I like the new Earth Mother and God of Craftsmen pantheons :).
Goddess of Love now Tutleary Gods - +2 production, +1 faith in cities with 3+ citizens; +1 production and faith from Engineer specialists : It feels even weaker than goddess of love and it does not actually scale.

It scales with number of cities, and and the number of engineers. I kind of like it.

Are barbarians more of a credible threat in this patch, or is it just me?

Early-game balance feels great at the moment for me. Playing as Tradition Morocco with a nice start, I took God of Craftsmen and have consistently been somewhere in the middle of the pack, with different civs moving up and down as they discover techs, adopt policies etc.

Spoiler Until next time :

Edit: Did well as Indonesia, built Halicarnassus. Shoshone in second place as they should be. Will try next difficulty up I guess. Got to turn 90.

Spoiler Desert Flowers :

Another game as Indonesia, last place this time lol. Turn 90 again.

Spoiler You win some, you loose some. :

Edit: A game with Byzantium, only got to turn 61 this time :/. Guess I'll just submit what I've collected.

I think that it may be good moment to stop for a little and give our developers a rest they need.

Many of us appreciate your work @Gazebo and others developers (despite what many of you think of me, I am not @Crag Hack) and if you really consider this version feature complete, take a break, and don't fill forced to react on every tiny balance issue that will inevitable appear up it in this thread.

If you need, I wouldn't mind if you take a break from biweekly betas. Not because I don't like them, I love them, but because you deserve it. Especially since we had some major shuffles last times (archers, cities strength, pantheons) and we need some more time to test it to stable. Let the dust settle. Furthermore, last version have major stability issues for many players. If it's possible I would like this to be cleaned up first. I suggest you look into Windows 7 causing instability. I have it, @BiteInTheMark, @JamesNinelives, @Voremonger, what are your OS?

Yes, I am on Windows 7 myself.

Your sentiment is well placed, but I think it is difficult for the devs to make progress on this issue without clear data to point to where the problem is. I'm hoping that if enough people submit reports that will help us narrow down the factors. It's also possible that in fixing other issues an unexpected observation may may reveal itself. In either case, I trust the dev team to have a fair idea of which approach will help them to figure out this mystery :).

I notice that players with windows 10 have also reported CTDs and players with windows 7 have reported no CTDs, so lets not jump to conclusions.

What programs do you have installed and running in the background?

Beside for testing sessions is better playing with VP full without any other mods. I saw in a couple of reports on github Really advanced setup and some other mods.

Well, sure. I have 8 mods running alongside VP. I played 3 or 4 games without other mods on this patch and still got CTD. I also played about a dozen games on the previous beta without mods and still got CTDs every time. So if I'm going to continue starting new games every 100 turns or so I think having quality-of-life improvements is an acceptable compromise.

In the background I have Firefox open most of the time, that's it.

What about AV software?

Don't think I have anything running at the moment. I have No-Script for browsing which runs through Firefox. Steam is open of course, because that's what I'm running Civ though. My browser tends to be what uses the most memory after the game though.

Yeah, I know what No-script is. It won't be the issue, nor will steam.

Not knowing if you have AV running is an issue (especially on windows 7) and a far more serious issue than VP crashing.

The last version that seemed to be stable for me was the 2-9-4 branch, it was hard but at least it didn't crash to desktop. For me it's always been fairly stable up until the versions after that, a crash now and then but it was usually very very late in the game. Since I didn't change anything I doubt it has anything to do with OS (I run win7 to), applications running in the background or whatnot. But I did reinstall Civ5 just to make sure something wasn't corrupt or had become weird there but it didn't seem to make any difference. But what do I know. But since then it seems that there will be a crash within the first 100 turns or so (epic speed, deity). I know "github" etc etc, I'll just upload a few saves here that should, or does, crash for me within five turns (that is what my autosave is set at) from the current version branch (3-1b). They are both India games.

The "autosave" at turn 75 runs no other mods, the one from turn 102 (different game) runs the 3rd-4th component mod, improved city view and the top panel replacement mods. I can't really say I'm doing anything special at the moment. Just standard playing and hitting the next turn and then you are at the desktop.

(edit) The civMinidump is, or created, from the autosave at turn 75 save game.

Code:
Goddess of Wisdom - +1 science, faith in every city; +1 great scientist points in capital/holy city; +1 faith and science in a city with a specialist

RIP Goddess of Wisdom, it is one of the worst pantheons now, and fertility becomes even more OP with nerfs to wisdom, commerce.

Trying it now, it's actually +2 GS points in capital and +2 :c5faith:/:c5science: in cities with a specialist. Decent. It would be garbage if +1 only. Without faith CS/NW/quests/ruins I might be able to barely found on deity rushing shrines and markets, we'll see. Edit: nope, ETA for 5th religion was t99, AI picked last on t95 :D I was settling too slow, AI spammed towns so quick.

Windows 10 is forgiving with overflow errors. If the code makes it overflow, W10 will just ignore that line and continue to the next one. Gazebo runs on W10, so that's why it is worth to check if the errors come from W7, since G won't be able to track them then.

I play on Win 10 with no CTDs, my cousin plays with win 7 with no CTDs either.
Could you share your cousin start settings? Barbs, events and such?

  • Defender of the Faith was too good, however losing one faith, not just one culture feels like an over nerf.
  • Boredom scaler increased a bit (harder to become bored) : Not gonna lie, i hated the no matter what you do, your cities will always get unhappiness from boredom .... not sure how much it's getting reduced but anything is better than none :)
  • Inquisition - bonus from remove heresy now scales on # of purged believers, not conversion status : Does this mean i can get the inquisition bonus multiple times from the exact same city if some citizens convert ?
  • Starting defense is 5 (was 4)
Starting HP is 300 (was 200), scales by 10 per pop (Was 5 per pop) : Pretty positive change, early game warriors with drill soloing cities was hilarious tho :)
  • Goddess of Fertility now the Goddess of the Home - +1 food/faith from shrines; +10 food/faith when you construct a building, scaling; +25% growth : Progress' best buddy but not a guaranteed religion anymore.
  • Earth Mother - removed Iron bonus, scaling production; added +1 faith and production from Monuments : Feels like a nerf for an already weak pantheon for founding, not sure why tho but Ethiopia is going to love that.
  • Goddess of Love now Tutleary Gods - +2 production, +1 faith in cities with 3+ citizens; +1 production and faith from Engineer specialists : It feels even weaker than goddess of love and it does not actually scale.
  • God of Commerce - +2 faith/gold in connected cities; Capital/Holy city gains +2 great merchant points, +2 gold/faith per active trade route : Pretty good change IMO, it was pretty much the only guaranteed religion pantheon that scaled very well.

-Agreed with you on DotF that it seems like an over-nerf
-Earth Mother I think I agree with you here as well; not sure why removing the Iron bonus was necessary quite frankly - the scaling bonus had to go for sure though (and Open Sky could have used a Horse bonus)
-Tutleary Gods - Agreed with you
-God of Commerce looks solid yes

My priorities in life are currently:
1) Sleep
2) Take meds and continue psychotherapy
3) Personal hygiene
4) Don't withdraw and become socially isolated

So I'm going to give myself a pass on that one.

Well you got a crash report, that's something! :)
