New Expansion Speculation Thread

The main thing that makes me think it's Eleanor of Aquitaine as a new alt leader is that she fits with the devs stated desire to represent more female leaders, and illustrate the way that they held power without being formal leaders (they stated this on the website advertising R & F). More things don't make sense, however - I can't imagine them doing this with an alt leader for France, since France's other leader already represents this type of figure. She doesn't really fit well enough to be a second leader for England, and also England could unquestionably have a very popular second female leader, Elizabeth I. Also if they made her a leader for two Civs (a cool idea), that would be weird as there are stronger potential alt-leaders with whom to use this feature, like James I & VI (Eng & Scotland) or Cnut (Norway & England). It would also open the can of worms about whether Victoria should also be a leader for Scotland (which she obviously should, and more arguably Australia too). So I think it'd be a weird thing to do overall.

Cnut would be a better dual leader for England and Denmark. While he did rule Norway, he came by it through conquest whereas he inherited the thrones of England and Denmark. He was also only the king of Norway for about 7 years.

While I would prefer that case, I doubt it. It would be hard to find another Medieval Great General of the female persuasion to replace her in that capacity. And being that there are so few female Great Generals to begin with, it would not do to replace her with a man.
TBH, I always thought Aethelflaed was a man (I had only seen the name, followed by "the Unready") so having her as an actual leader would be good as I don't think I am the only one in the UK who does not know anything about "him". (And I don't think the Great General has two gender models; does it?)

If they're going the production-with-a-cost route (pollution, climate change, etc) then making rain forests a natural offset would be a way to dissuade the Chop Everything meta we find ourselves in.

Perhaps as a civilization moves into the Modern ea, jungles could provide +1 appeal, rather tan the negative modifier earlier in the game.

I'm so interested in this magical "AI fix" people keep talking about, that would just *poof* turn the AI into gods at the game.

One might even wonder why the hell Firaxis is improving the AI in every single patch if they can just implement this magical fix instead.

I don't see anybody demanding that the AI be gods at the game, people just want a competent AI that is capable of winning in a timely manner. As things stand, as soon as you make it to mid-game without getting wiped out you are very, very likely going to win.

Diety isn't a challenge past mid-game.

You're confusing her with the more famous https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Æthelred_the_Unready

And for those who don't know "the Unready" is actually a poor translation: "the Poorly Counseled" would be more accurate (if less concise).

As for those objecting to random events because it's a 4X game...random events have been a part of 4X games for a couple decades now. Anyone here play the 1999 game Star Trek: The Next Generation: Birth of the Federation (which, incidentally, is one of my favorite 4X games to this day)? It had random events. (I usually turned them off because, while a lot of them were cool, there was also the Borg. :p Fun anecdote: in one game, the Borg wiped out every civilization except me and the Romulans. The Romulans and I were both down to one system and there were several Borg cubes wandering both our erstwhile territories. I thought for sure the Borg were going to win the game for me by offing the Romulans...but they got me first. :p ) The Endless games also have (very well implemented) random events. I for one thought Civ4's random events worked pretty well, too.

I hope they make strategy resources more useful, not only for warfare:blush:
I mean, Oil possession is a reason for war nowadays and for sure it's not for generating units:nono:
If only they added bonus yields for the entire civ if they had a strategic resource:mischief:
like coal is needed to build factories, horses give 1+ ammenities, iron gives bonus production to district buildings, niter gives bonus science for labs...etc:crazyeye:

What about Eleanor herself? Didn't she lead a crusade? The special ability is that you could retire Aethelflaed into a knight already and it would make just as much sense.

She went on a crusade with her then husband, and she and her ladies dressed up as amazons.
That bears roughly the same relation to crusading as Marie-Antoinette's frolics did to shepherding.

If this is the 2 and last expansion for this game just like civ v. Then im afraid its not enough to make ai good. Havent improved mutch with patches and R F so im sceptical with this game now

And Eleanor's crusade was a crushing defeat. Not exactly Great General material.

Also, I loved that Aethelflead gave you a Knight. One time, I played England and got Aetheflead. I created the Knight and leveled him up just to name him Uhtred. Bonus points if you get that reference.

If they add a world congress and diplo victory, it's quite unlikely, IMO. I'd love to see a third expansion that adds corporations and an economic victory related to corporate monopolies. But I'm not counting on it.

If there would be a third EP, I'd love for it to bring back Trade Networks, Colonization mechanics, Corporations, Monopolies, etc.

Since it's looking like the focus of the next expansion is around the environment and water tiles, I think it's looking a bit more likely that we'll have a 3rd expansion pack so that they can include mechanics like more diplomacy options, World Congress, and the colonies and corporations mentioned above. It would be nice to have diplomatic and economic victories included at some point.

Edit: I recall hearing that there would be several years of support so more expansion packs and patches would make sense.

This is exactly why I mentioned it. If this mechanic would get them in the game I won't complain.
Once you reach the year 2012 and don't win a victory with the Maya game over.

Enough of the Mayan Calendar 2012 nonsense!!!!

Just had a thought: what if Eleanor of Aquitaine is appearing in a scenario added with the new expansion? Can't think what it would be - perhaps something Crusades-y, or around Henry II's wars with his sons and the French - but it seems a bit more plausible than her being an out-and-out leader.
