New Expansion Speculation Thread

But speaking specifically of Civ6, aside from overplaying Cleopatra, they have done a better job of not oversexualizing the female leaders.
I don't know. Wilhelmina is one good looking g-ma. :mischief:
While many of Civ V's civs are one-trick ponies, I have to agree that too many Civ VI civs have bonuses that blend into each other. I do miss unique civs like Venice or Austria that had powerful game-changing abilities under certain circumstances. While Civ VI has deeper civ design than Civ V, Civ VI features too many +X, +Y for A type resource bonuses, or various war bonuses for declaring war in certain circumstances (Cyrus, Robert, Chandragupta)...

I think one possibility for a Civ game in the future is to have fewer civs but radically different playstyles for each, while still retaining flexibility to pursue multiple victory types. So maybe a base game that only came with 10 civs for example, but each playing very differently (ala Starcraft having 3 races vs. Age of Empires II's 13 or so--both games were great, but Starcraft was better at differentiating civs, which is why Age of Mythology essentially featured 3 major different civs with subcivs/leader types in a Starcraft-esque fashion as well, perhaps).
I tend to think that even the same civ can feel unique at some times, such as a more aggressive Gorgo for Greece or more diplomatic Pericles. However, I do agree that some abilities are similar like those you mentioned, especially the war bonuses. The fact that every Civ has at least one UU and a unique infrastructure as well, helps out.

I don't know if I would necessarily like future games to have fewer Civs over different playstyles. I was never a fan of radical changes in the first place to gameplay such as Venice and the Huns.
I could just see the comments about possibly playing an Aztecmayainca or Japochinakorea blob civs to cram everything they could in the game. At least that would be my impression of what they could do which turns to more fantasy than I would like.
However an age of mythology like spin-off game of Civ I would gladly take.

ltest updated again.
They keep updating ltest this week, which I don't think is related to the expansion. And only one update to one of the usual test branches. Not sure what to read on that. Could be they have the expansion to a good enough place for marketing purposes and are slowing down for a few weeks as marketing ramps up. :dunno:

LTest might just stand for "Linux Test", as that still doesn't have xplatform play.

Honestly I don't think we'll ever convince the game industry that teenage boys are not their primary target market. :(

Sexy female characters is not something that appeal only to teenagers.

But I find it really questionable that females in civ5 are portrayed that way for marketing reasons considering the kind of game this is and how its usually advertised. To me it more likely reflects a bias from the artists.

Aspyr reports that Linux cross-platform is good to go. They are dealing with a crash bug on certain chipsets, and that is what is holding them up. Perhaps LTest is a build customized for those problematic chipsets.

I've been putting some thought into this myself.

I suppose not all males grow out of being oversexed.

I'm a fan of asymmetric unique factions--Endless Space 2, for instance, does this very well--but I don't think it works for the Civilization franchise. There are only so many ideas you can have for 50 factions. However, I'm a fan of having a handful of civs that play very differently where appropriate--like Civ5's Venice (even though I never played as them) or Civ6's Kongo (even though I hate playing as them).

There is also a lot of stuff in the trailer that isn’t in the game apart from just Black Plague and UN (which people have discussed before) - eg Nazis , Berlin Wall. I think you could look at these things in two ways.

One is these elements reflect things the designers were working on at the time, and may have even originally intended to put into RnF but didn’t in the end. So, perhaps the trailer gives more clues about what’s coming (eg Ideologies, Hazards).

Two, the trailer guys were struggling to find ways to represent things like loyalty and ages, and these things are just the best they could figure out. So, maybe you can’t read too much into the bits and pieces in the last trailer.

Yeah, I think things in the trailer like the plague &Nazi's were references to a dark age. Followed up by better ages, like when communism collapsed, and the wall came down.

Sexy female characters is not something that appeal only to teenagers.

I think they have done a brilliant job with Cleo. She genuinely appeals to me on a level that is... yes sexual flirting; but it's not as OTT or clunky as some people make it out to be. I have pre-teen nephew's who play VI and I have no concern that interactions with her are corrupting their minds. Far more of the stuff they see on tv aimed for kids their age is worse for them.
It does make me want to help her out at times when I might otherwise not help another leader in the same circumstances. Which is nice & immersive.

I didn't mean she's over-the-top to the point of pushing the rating or anything. I simply think it's an unfortunate oversimplification of a woman who was more of a cunning strategist than a wanton flirt.

I have the same reaction to Jadwiga: she's just so adorable.

Wouldn't they just make a stable build for promotional purposes, and then just fork the code and keep developing while the marketing team records what they need?

Few leader representations in any game including Civ escape being simplified to fit a role; and that even works moreso for the caricatures in VI. I think Cleo's relationships (plural!) with Roman leaders warrants the portrayal.

I would think so, but there was only one update to a 2kqa branch this week, unlike the two or three 2kqa updates per week for the past two months; I was trying to come up with an explanation.

I forget who told us about Smoke testing. But that appears to be what the Smoke build is for. And there were 2 Smoke build updates prior to the last 2kqa update. I would say they are satisfied with the current build, at least for now. They will likely resume testing after the holiday.

Sometimes the cunning strategy is to appear to be just a simple wanton flirt.

Until there is an official announcement of some kind this will be the thread where we can discus and pontificate on what a future expansion might look like.

A reminder that

a) We don't know what it will contain so please don't get into fights over content we don't know about
b) Firaxis has not in any way released any information that they are working on a second expansion, the info we have now comes from an unconfirmed leak, so please no pestering of Firaxis staff in this thread about more information
c) HERE is a link to the leak, but remember this has not been confirmed

There's.... a lot to unpack here. Even for a few measly screenshots. Especially for the (Maori?) leader.

...And now I have a lot of catching up to do. Can anyone summarize what we have so far? Just so I can get on the hype train. @bite @Eagle Pursuit @WillowBrook

I have been missing a lot because of life and school and I will be missing a lot because of life and school (it's going to be hell week for me next week)

Someone on reddit claiming to be a Hungarian translator is saying that the Vesuvius Leaders are as follows: Mansa Musa, Arpad, Simon Bolivar, Atahualpa, Tāwhiao, Roxelana, Arawrahta, Midgegooroo, Eleanor.

If true then the new Civilizations would breakdown like this:

Mali - Mansa Musa
Hungary - Arpad
Colombia - Simon Bolivar
Inca - Atahualpa
Maori - Tāwhiao
Ottomans -Roxelana
Burma - Anawrahta
Noongar - Midgegooroo
England or France - Eleanor

I just want to reply to this. I would be disappointed if this list was real. Disappointed in that there isn't going to be an Italian civ. Mali, Inca and Maori are fine in my book. Hungary is a welcome addition for me. I have some problems with Roxelana as an Ottoman leader because (based on a scan of the Wikipedia page *guilty*) she's quite controversial in Ottoman history, but I'll be open to the prospect of a female Ottoman leader. I have some reservations for an Aboriginal tribe to be featured in Civ6, unless it has a leader who's prominent enough in the history of Aboriginal-settler relations in Australia. I don't want Burma or Eleanor - I want Siam (back) and another French/English leader, preferably Henry V (for England) or Napoleon (for France).

Hi, good to see you pop in! :wavey:

Short version: there's no grounds for dancing bananas yet, but we expect to see something official from Firaxis about a second expansion in the next few weeks.

Longer version:
1) Some some pics have been leaked showing a Polynesian man, a medieval European woman, and some water-based structures. They appear to be pictures taken with a phone of printed pictures tacked to a wall. They have the name Civ VI Vesuvius on them.

Most people here (I think) think the pics are probably real leaks, although the blond queen is more debated. Whether Vesuvius is the internal name or actual name is debated.

2) Someone claiming to be a Hungarian translator has posted a list allegedly of all nine leaders for the upcoming expansion. (For a link, see the first post in my thread polling whether people think it's a hoax.) Many CivFanatics think it's fabricated, but others don't. That alleged leaker also claims that the expansion will be titled Time and Tide, so we'll have a better idea of whether they have inside info when the trailer comes out.

3) Whatever the veracity of the above, Firaxis has been working on a new DLC, with regular updates to the usual test branches for the past two months. They also created a new branch named marketing - leading to speculation that there will be fewer leaks in official sources this time around.

So there you go. There will be a new thread whenever the expansion is announced, so check back occasionally, but don't let the monumental thread that has accumulated here distract you from real life responsibilities.
