[NFP] New Frontier Pass Screenshot Analysis Thread

We can surmise Forest fires are being ported to the main game as well. I think:

1. They are not liable to add more disasters with absolutely no upside because people will complain

2. They obviously understand that forest fires are an important part of nature (do you really think they're so ignorant? :P This point doesn't even require research)

So yes the forest fires will likely see some yield benefit.

He said two of the disasters would be in the base game, but he didn't say which two.

I think we can guess that Forest Fires are in base and Comet Strike is Apocalypse only, but the other two are not as obvious.

It looks like the Meteor Shower leaves an Iron resource in the crater. Which is quite logical.

I'm thinking the apocalypse mode specific disasters might only be initiated by the Soothsayer and not just random. I.e. having a comet wipe out a city or a wonder randomly seems a little much for RNG. But having it wipe out your city because you let an enemy 'mystic' wander in your borders is something quite different.

I thought they made it pretty clear that the Apocalypse-mode disasters are random and dialed to 11. It may have no warning and no upside like GS disasters, but you did deliberately turn on Apocalypse mode. :p

Now the question will be, how do we counter the soothsayers? With missionaries? Apostles? Or just stamp them by the might of our military?

I'd sic my Inquisitors on them. Hello, Spain.

I mean, if I get to choose the type of disaster when I use a Soothsayer, I will totally sic them on my own people. Crazy dude says a Volcano is going to erupt when there isn't even a volcano around? DOOM TO MY CIVILIZATION (and glorious volcanic soil yields)

Does it make sense (as much as it does in this game) to have it be a pernament source of iron (in Gathering Storm), or a harvestable kind?

I can't imagine that the iron would last long enough for generations...could it?

Well, any metal deposit should realistically be limited, but I doubt that would be a welcome gameplay change.

"Renown" in military history refers to the Reputation of the unit, usually the result of some exploit on the battlefield. It can be a very important Force Multiplier. Some historical examples:
Spartan Hoplites. Their Renown was so great that other Greek armies ran away as soon as they saw the Spartan shields "with the red lambdas gleaming" coming at them out of the dust.
Garde Imperiale (in Civ VI already). The Old Guard Grenadiers had such a reputation that the sight of their tall bearskin helmets was enough to make enemy armies reconsider what they were doing.

And a perfect personal example was the Native American warrior named Man Afraid of His Horses. What that name meant was that he was considered so dangerous a fighter that his enemies were even afraid of his horses

All of which leads me to suspect that the Renown mechanism might be something added to a unit for some performance (killing several enemy units, taking a city, etc) that results in a Special Promotion after which they reduce enemy Combat Factors or Movement - unless the enemy unit also has Renown!

Alternatively, similar to how you generated Great General Points in Civ 5, maybe after scoring the points the unit becomes Great Sort-of-General with buffs for team, inspiring them to be as cool as him.

Potato McWhiskey said of the Bermuda Triangle that it was a wonder, but was specific that it was not part of the Apocalypse mode. Make of that what you will.

A Natural Wonder that destroys ships reminds me of the campaign in Age of Empires 2's expansion with the Vikings trying to cross the Atlantic to the "New World". Any ship which entered that ocean (with some design like a dragon) ended up getting destroyed. I wonder if Bermuda Triangle will be similar. How about a Bimini Road or Yonaguni Natural Wonder? lol

*sigh* I just don't get why Firaxis cant use actual temples and palaces as reference for mesoamericans and feels the need to invent their own.

EDIT: I mean just by looking at it...the palace is a mishmash of diferent styles, assuming It's Pakal...why not use Pakal palace or the temple of the inscriptions as reference?

I guess they find the Mesoamerican temples more distinctive than the actual palaces. Putting Mesoamerican pyramids as the Palace building is a weird idea to me. I mean the "castles" for the Aztecs and Maya in AoE 2 are Mesoamerican pyramids as well.... I'm hoping Pacal sits this one out though and let a different Mayan leader take charge.

The forest fire also seems to be affecting Oxford University in that one photo. Does that mean wonders can now get pillaged by natural disasters?

Finally, Great Library can get special bonus everytime it burns. Doubled If you build it adjacent to Harbor.

They have to introduce alongside them Nihilist Memer Millenial unit. When the Soothsayer comes, they'll use their "Finally, the sweet release of death" ability to stun the Soothsayer who, faced with the environment of acceptance of his job rather than the to humanity usual disdain for catastrophies, has no idea how to act.

It's clearly a field of Tamar flowers in Georgia.

Hundreds, thousands of Tamar rising from the ground, growing, thriving, until they consume the world.
