I've seen some around, as in a :hug: if someone's had bad news or has a problem, or :lol: if something is funny. I don't see a problem with those.

I hate gifs, though - those looped images from TV shows or movies. I usually have no idea what it's from, who's in it, or what it's supposed to mean. This is a time when I wish people would use their words, since it's a failure to communicate otherwise.

I agree with gifs. I was specifically talking about some leniency on emoticons, not the other elements of that TOS rule, given it would be specifically standing in for the reaction change.
