NEW Rome 281 B.C - 400 A.D

Here is an example of the type of Roman units I intend to use later on in the game (all by Fairline at mo but I will look for others).

It realy inspires me to see such historically accurate units. Can't wait to finish the game and repel a few Visigothic invasions with them.

A good site for unit ideas is: http:/dbaol.com/armies.htm
I dabbled in this for a little while but my painting skills of lead figures are about the same as my graphics skills (ie. 1/10). The site does give a good guide to armies of different periods of Ancient and Medieval history. They are also quite easy to shrink and put against a pink or purple background if you want to create some units for a new game in a hurry. I have tried this in the past and the results are OK if a little blured.

That attachment doesn't seem to work for me. I'm using Firefox though....:scan:

This is a posed screenshot but I think it gives it gives you a good feel for the game. I realy like Leonidas' new Celtic warband conversion. I will post up a few more of these to help get the creative juices flowing. Hey, I've got a few days off work so I may actually do some work on the scenario finally!!!

Great screenshot.

Although, as you probably noticed, those shields will need to be re-set, to be closer to the units. :goodjob:

I wish the events file was ten times bigger so I could fit in a sound effect for every event!
*Cough* Test of Time's events space is about 3 times that of MGE and with the additions to the macro language, can be more efficient. Mind you, if you piggyback PlayWaveFile actions on other events, you'll find that they don't take up much additional events space at all. Keep the filename lengths of the sound files to a minimum to squeeze every drop out of the available memory - filenames are stored as strings at the end of the events block.

I love what you are doing with the Lord of the Rings Scenario for ToT and I hope it may be finished in the near future.
I'll keep the threadjack snappy. Barring the documentation/readme file, some city improvement descriptions in describe.txt and about a dozen placeholder unit graphics, it's pretty much finished as a playable beta. The mechanics of the scenario are done. I've just been a lazy and disinterested bastard.

I hear you on that one.

I have my good days and bad ones....

However, it would be interesting if you started a new thread about your LoTR scenario. I, for one, would install my copy of ToT to playtest your scenario.

Cheers!

Yeah, early days yet, these screenshots are just to help peoples imaginations. Will polish the final game until it shines like a beautiful jewel

Have tried those later Roman units again as they are well worth a look. By this point in the game the Roman Empire will probably be at or near its high water mark and the stats of the troops will be diminished while the barbarians will be better. This will mean the human player will have to rely more on good organization and lines of communication to stave off their enemies. Does not hurt to have attractive units though! Hope this screenshot works.

Also another mock up:

I have just registered for Apolyton forums and its like Santas grotto in there. Like the first time I found this site in fact!

I have browsed the web for the last four years or so looking for nice graphics or a new scenario. When I had looked at Apolyton as an unregistered outsider I was not that impressed. The scenario download collection looked a bit brief and was full of pretty poor looking efforts from the last century.
I did not realise that the real action was in the forums. :crazyeye:

At the moment I do not know where to begin. I think I may start by grabbing as many cool graphics as I can for my archive (with signatures intact!).
I am going to hold off posting my WWII scenario there until I have resolved the Units gif signature issue as it seems like a sore point! I will probably start a similar Ancient thread there too.

I will continue this thread as I have got some excellent feedback and am a big fan of the Civ Fanatics site! I gather Apolyton is where it is all going on though so I will be dipping my toes into the water there too!:goodjob:

Looking good! :goodjob:

And your ideas about later unit playability sounds spot on.

I started work on my tech-tree yesterday.
My concept is to use the original tree and change the tech names and units/improvements/wonders possition on the tree. At he moment I have used the original A3 map that came with the game to draw up an exact copy with all the info blanked out. I will add the three letter codes to each box, minus the special techs (ie Bridge building, mobile warfare). I will keep the extra techs for the nation specific techs (Ie. NO ROMAN etc...). I will need to use some of the later techs (Plastics etc..) to fill in the gaps in the tree left by special techs. That should be fairly simple. Just need to make sure that eventually all paths lead to future technology!
This would be a good time for suggestions on techs. I have a few good books on the period, the best being: Historical Atlas of Ancient Rome by Nick Constable (Mercury Books London), which seems like it was destined to be used for a Civ scenario!

Here's a few suggestions:

Horse Breeding
Maniple Tactics
Corvus
Cohort Tactics
Imperial Army
Roman Law
Heavy Polymeres
Professional army
Pax Romana
Lessons of Cannae
Republican army
War fleet
Influence of the Senate
Tactics
Heavy infantry tactics
Praetorian Guards
Late Republic
Army Reforms of Marius
Legion Training
Martial Law
Gladiatorial Combat

Finished the paper plan of the tech tree today while at work (sundays are quite dull!). I just need to have a peak at some other Roman scenarios ti get some more snappy names for the techs. Overall though I am quite pleased with how easily it was done. May use the same technique in future.
Also I found some more excellent units by Fairline (Romes Enemies posted on Apolyton). With these and the ones I have already there are pleanty to finish the game.
Will start on events next.

Have a look at the scenarios "Imperium", "Hannibal's War", and "Seeds of Greatness" for events. There are a lot of good ones. Simply copy and past the ones you want, substituting the units and co-ordinates for your scenario.

Cheers!

Hello Ancients

I have started a thread in the 'other place' to spread the word about my Ancient scn to as many people as possible. If you would like to have a look heres the link: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=4743226&t=3384#post4743226
I will of course still be posting here but cannot duplicate everything and I'm afraid Apolyton seems like a more active Forum so they will be getting the lions share. Leonidas, thanks for the help so far, it is much appreciated and I hope you will check out the thread at Apolyton.

BTW the Tech Tree is nearing completion, just finishing it off at work tonight ;)

Peace out!

Werd100:

Sounds cool.

I'll probably stick to hanging out here at Civ Fanatics.

Any new graphics I do will probably be posted in the Units thread, so they will be available for use.

All the best! If you need any advice/suggestions, just ask. :goodjob:

Cheers!

I did manage to finish this scenario in the end. It is available to download here:
http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.php?title=Aeterna_Civitas

It is designed for MGE primarily as a PBEM game but it should also be fun as a single player game.

Thanks to Leonidas for his help during the early stages :)
