New screens @ tothegame.com

The topple-the-stalin-statue shot makes me wonder what context it has in the game. FMV for spy coup missions? A wonder? Or part of the opening cinematic for the game?

Nice screens, altough what they are for is puzzling.

Perhaps they are victory movies?(a la the space ship one in Civ III)

un victory, space victory wud be the obvious ones...

statue toppling? - conquest/domination?
flag planting? - conquest/domination?
city view? - cultural victory?

One note with great amusement that they swapped the Real World flags for Civ-Flags in front of the UN.

The movie with the statue could be shown when you change civics or when a city culture flips.

actually my guess wud be:

statue toppling for conquest (think the us vs. saddam)
flag planting for domination (since u need a certain amount of landmass to win)
city view for cultural victory ('cuz u'll prob. need to build a slew of wonders)

the UN one looks like a wonder movie. I would guess the others are part of the intro sequence.

The victory conditions leave much room for concern, although it appears they made cultural victory more balanced:

5) Diplomatic Victory - I thought most of us agreed this was stupid. Unless I read something really out of context, it sounds like it will work about the same as Civ 3. This also seems to suggest that leader of the UN doesn't do much else, or is very long lasting. That means the UN will not have the multi-lateral reach or abilities we have been asking for.

I thought their were going to be new victory conditions we've never seen before? Like Alliance and Technological or something, but all of those are in CivIII. And it calls Diplomatic victory "brand new"?

The diplomatic victory is reworked - it isn't as simple as just getting that first and only vote - there's a series of UN resolutions that need to be passed I beileve.

these look like a waste of development money to me. it would have been cheaper, better looking, and more historically-infused to do video collage. the 3d here isn't good enough to watch more than once.

Actually there are two light sources beyond the window: Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B, the binary star system that is a part of the triple star system that is Alpha Centauri (Proxima Centauri, the 3rd (and much smaller) star, is not visible in this image). There is a planet visible in the right side of the window. (We do not know for sure if there are planets in this star system, but there is the possibility that terrestrial planets do exist.)

So this is clearly the space race victory. I, for one, really like it! :goodjob:

EDIT: Corrected spelling error!

personally, if these screen shots were caps of a video collage instead, *i* wouldn't be thinking, "this is something good enough to watch many times over." to me, it just seems that there's really no way to make it *that* great, no matter what they do. additionally, it doesn't seem like it could be as "historically infused" if they only showed video footage from the past century.

in any case, i'm just hoping that these videos are rewarding enough to convince me to try each victory condition once. which, sadly, is exactly how often i completed most of the victory conditions (on purpose, at least) in civ3.

You don't have to guess, the article links each type of victory to one of the screen shots (click on the victory type in the article). Anyway - your "guesses" are correct.

And does anyone know what happened to the Alliance and Technological victory types? I'm sure they were mentioned- they definitely said there was going to be more victory types, but this list suggests that we just get what was in CivIII, which is a dissapointment.

Yeah, apparently getting elected Secretary-General is not the end of the Diplomatic game. Now, as S-G, you can sponsor a number of UN resolutions to be voted on. One of them is a 'World Leader' resolution, but number of votes for all resolutions now depend on the size of the nations involved, and the reasons other civs will/will not vote for resolutions you put up will be much deeper than how much you have bribed them in the last 10-20 turns. It will now depend on your longer-term behaviour, your civics/religion choices and how powerful you are in an area of critical importance to that civ.
Additionally, though, just because you are S-G one turn, doesn't mean you are for the entire game. Elections for S-G apparently occur ever X-turns.

Aussie_Lurker.
