I was hoping it was just a rumour when I saw it mentioned on CNN but here it is on Star Trek.com

BREAKING NEWS: J.J. Abrams to Produce "Trek XI"

J.J. Abrams, producer of hit shows Lost and Alias, as well as director of the upcoming Paramount film "Mission: Impossible III," is slated to produce the next Star Trek feature, according to today's Daily Variety.
Although the official Paramount press release should follow shortly, word about the Abrams project surfaced this morning in the daily trade paper. He will be writing the script with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci who penned "MI: III." Although Abrams is not yet confirmed to direct the project, he isn't ruling it out either.

The proposed story will focus on the early days of James T. Kirk and Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission in space.

Although it's not confirmed, Abrams' producing partners from Lost, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk are cited as being producers on the untitled "Trek XI" feature. (This project is separate from the previously rumored script developed by Eric Jendersen and overseen by Rick Berman.)

This new film is currently targeted for a 2008 release.

How in the world can they think thats a good plot for a Star Trek movie? How? Have they learned nothing from what has failed?

My favorite quote regarding this film I have seen is "They have hit rock bottom so they brought out the dynamite."

At the least we still have the orginal shows and films.

AH, the prequel..what a :vomit: great movie invention....

The idea of doing a film based on Kirk and company during their Academy days has been going for years. I'd wait for the actual press release from Paramount first.

Though, on the other side of the fence, there could be some truth in the 'going back to the academy years' this time, given the success of Batman Begins and with the new Bond film going back to it's roots.

And of course, it can't be worse than Star Trek V, can it?

Can it?

Can someone make sure that Rick Berman has nothing to do with it.

I wonder who they'll cast as Kirk and Spock.

It'd be nice if it wasn't a pile like the last movie, a good idea poorly executed, well almost a good idea anyway.

Seconded, emphatically.

Or better yet, invite him to lay out his vision for the movie, just so they know what not to do under any circumstances.

I don't think it will go over well. Kirk and Spock will NOT work without Shatner and Nimoy. Those actors make the characters.

Final Frontier wasn't THAT bad. :p It's not my favorite, but it has some of the best Kirk/Spock/McCoy scenes.

Batman Begins wasn't really a prequel, it was a reimagining of Batman completely seperate from any other Batman story.

They weren't trying to fit it in a prexisting universe like I'm sure they are going to with this film.

Indeed, seeing them singing Row, row, row your boat is possibly the defining point of the entire franchise.

I jest, of course. I did love the Kirk-Spock-McCoy relationship, some good fun.

Was my point. It could go either way really. We could have a Batman Begins or a Phantom Menace on our hands here. :p

Oh god, I just brought Star Wars into a Star Trek thread.

Some trekkies would argue that we already have a Phanthom Menace -- it's called Enterprise. Then again it's not a movie. I'm not one of them, though -- I've enjoyed all of the Enterprise episodes that I've seen.

I agree. Star Trek is old crap. They should come out with movies with more transhumanist themes. :)

We'll have to see what else happens. I agree that Shatner, Nimory and DeForest are what made Star Trek, can't do a prequel with out cloning them. Heck all of the original cast worked well together and really complimented each other, a testament to their professionalism is most had a problem with another cast member and still went on(I remember in an interveiw Scotty saying that Shatner was stuck up and so forth)

OK, I'm not a full-on trekkie, but didn't Kirk and Spock only meet after Pike ceased to be the Enterprise's captain?

And I'd also like to go on record as saying I fully expect this to be a debacle. Might as well call it "Jim Henson's Star Trek Babies."

If I were the casting director, I would cast Frankie Muniz as Kirk and Jason Schwartzman as Spock, just to ensure that the whole thing fails abysmally enough that no one ever considers anything like this again.

And people complained about the SW prequels :D

From the startrek.com press release:
This project is separate from the previously rumored script developed by Eric Jendersen and overseen by Rick Berman. The former Star Trek producer is not involved in this project.

I've never seen any of the movies. I think I'd like to though, just for entertainment.

Also, after reading this thread, I thought it was time to bring out the old Shatner picture that so many of you love.

Well, to tell the truth, I don't care in the least about this movie, so someone must tell me if it's worse than The Phantom Menace. Good God I hope not...

Dont care about Star Trek. Just give me Ghost in the Shell, Star Wars, and The Matrix and I'll be happy :).
