New strategy for Mali?

Now that West Africa has been redesigned, a new strategy may be necessary.

Here's what I figured out:
-On the first turn, first city should be Djenne (I tried settling Niani 1 tile south. Looks better but trust me, it was a bad idea). Second city should be Timbuktu, to get the stone. I have no idea about the third city (Gao or Wagadugu in the east? Sefadu in the western coast?). Get one of your workers to build a road heading northeast to the Mediterranean Sea. You will need it for the Great Merchant. The other two workers should improve the mines near Djenne. Switch to Despotism and beeline to Education.
-Build a temple on Timbuktu, and a Market in Djenne (a Mint too if you have time). Whip them as soon as you can.
-Once you have your Market, assign two Merchants and switch to Monasticism. When you have your Temple, assign a Priest.
-If you've done it right, you should have your Great Merchant by the late 1200. Run towards Mecca.
-Once you research Education, switch back to Clergy and build University of Sankore (This will take some time, but somehow you'll build a 9th century building in the late 15th century). Once you research Education, set your research rate to zero. If you could built a Mint, have an Engineer in case you don't have any tiles with 3 or more production. Try not to trade Education with any other Muslim civilization.
-As soon as the Stone is within your culture borders, rush and build a Quarry there.
-Once you finish building your Wonder and settle a Great Prophet there, build Wealth in all of your cities and as many Great Merchants as you can. This time, they should go further east, to Patna/Azimabad.
-When your Golden Age is done, maybe you should build walls and extra units for defense (?).

Side notes:
-Kelebolos are awful at defending against mounted units.
-Impis can't reach any desert tiles.

I founded my third city on the Accra spot, to get the crab there. Health resources are not easy to come by for Mali.

That's more like a fourth city spot to me. And a fifth city for the cow seems worthwhile.

My reasoning was that Gao or something in that area takes a long time to be worth it.

My experience with Mali tells me if a city can work 4-5 decent tiles it's worthwhile. Tadmekka 1W of copper and Wagadugu 1W of ivory can each work several good tiles, meanwhile hiring some specialists.

I found that an initial civic switch to Citizenship (for fast Market and Mint building) and Caste System (for fast improvement building) is helpful to get a GM and a good economy as fast as possible.

I do something more extreme. I switch to Manorialism and whip out 6 workers, then switch to Caste System and let the 9 workers build improvements on resources and farm the floodplains. Then I switch back to Manorialism for the commerce bonus on farms.

Citizenship is naturally superior to Vassalage for Mali, as for many others.
