New Unit: Norman Knight

Kinboat,

Just wondering why no stirrups or riens? As you can see from the Bayeux Tapestry the Normans used both.

I thought I answered you before in the Preview thread... :) I know they had stirrups and everything... In the process of creation and rendering they were either too small to show up in the final, so I left them off to save memory. Or they ended up as confusing little blurs that weren't distinquishable as reins, so I left them off to save memory.

I guess I missed the response. (or forgot:blush: ) The thing is the Crusader has 'em and they look great. :)

Sorry to be a pain in the a$$. :D

ps. how much memory could a couple of reins take up?

There should be shortly an highlander converted from Cossacks

Great unit. I feel however the hair of the horse could do with more of a texture, it looks rather smooth to my eyes. Needless to say I will use it :)

Thanks!!!

Self explainatory... I just linked the sounds to the original Horseman and they seem to fit rather well. Could also be used as the Rohorim (LoTR), as the culture seems to be similar to Viking which the Normans are descended from.

EXCELLENT work as always, Kinboat! :goodjob:

I'm going to use this as an "early" knight unit, values TBD.

Reasons --

1. European knights did not begin to "couch" their lances until the late 12th century CE.

2. Plate armor wasn't used used over the torso at all until 1266 (the French at Benevento)

3. "Early" knights didn't charge en masse; rather, smaller groups would charge, hack around a bit, retreat, do it again, etc.

Many Thanks Yes Again,

Oz

I also will use this universally as an "early knight".

The run animation is SUPERB.

Minor criticism: while the stirrups aren't missed, the bridle and reins would've been nice.

Awesome unit Kinboat! Im already using it in my scenario as 'Lancer'. :)

Hmm .. just re-read the thread ...

In general, I'm very pro detailed, accurate historicity -- yet of even greater moment would be that the Norman cavalry was armed with swords and javelins, with the javelins being thrown (evidently not to very great effect) not used as lances. Nevertheless, IMHO if a unit "evokes" what it's intended to represent well enough, then, personally, I'm happy.

BTW Norman foot soldiery were equipped much like the knights, except, of course, for the horses ... loading horses onto boats was something of an art, which the Normans accomplished in 1066 using what were essentially longboats ... And, at Hastings (actually, at nearby Senlac Hill) William & Co. encountered Harold's Huscarles, which were generally adjudged to be the finest soldiery in Western Europe, who wielded two-handed axes yet used shield-walls defensively ... And all this digession is merely to hopefully whet graphic appetites for more medieval units :D

i was just thinking today when i finish with Boudicca, i want to do the Battle of Hastings. this is exactly what i needed! thank-you so much, i want to learn how to
do this kind of stuff really bad.

~peace~

Utro,
Welcome to CFC. You're new so you probably don't know it. But, it is generally frowned upon to bump old threads unless you have a specific issue with the topic item. ie: unit missing files, etc.

Its quite easy to do it badly, the tricky part is to do it well.
