Newbie Needs Help!!

Just to make sure, I'm not the Doughboy that likes to get poked like on the Pillsbury TV Ads.

Ok, I just entered the Industrial Age and I am having a huge trouble with pollution and having many grasslands and plains turned into desert. I really need this problem sloved. If this info helps, I don't have any coal plant's or factory's in any of my cities.

Pollution doesn't seem to get bad until you have built hospitals and your cities become metropoli. If your cities are still pop12 or less and you have no factories, I don't know what would be causing your pollution problem.

That's why! I have hospitals in most my cities...

Do mines cause pollution too? Even if you have all the pollution reducing improvements in all you cities pollution would still show up in your demographics unless you destroyed you mines.. I find that wierd...

The shields from the mines do cause pollution once your city is large enough.

basically, lots of shields (production) causes pollution.

I have a huge army of workers that kills the pollution in one turn as soon as it pops up, go railroads! :]

Hi Doughboy,

In case you haven't stumbled upon it yourself, what Xus is referring to is that you can send multiple worker units to clean up the pollution on a single square. Each one you add to the clean up effort will shorten the amount of turns it takes to clean it up. If you have enough workers you can shorten the time it takes to clean up pollution to one turn.

Build Mass Transport, Recycling Centers, Solar Plants, etc. to reduce the amount of pollution your cities produce.

Also, from my experience, the game calculates the pollution problem world-wide - not just with your Civ - so you may start to see some environmental changes taking place within your borders even though you don't necessarily have a pollution problem. That sucks, but is realistic I guess.

In the lower experience level games I've played (I haven't played at the tougher ones yet) the AI seems to be pretty bad at cleaning up pollution so, some environmental effects are unavoidable. Heck, I even sent some workers into China to help them with their pollution problem once, and was told to remove my forces or face the consequences. So, I let them live in their mess and continued to have my grasslands disappear. So much for wanting to help your neighbor. I guess I could have gotten an agreement to pass through their territory first, but didn't really want to at the time.

I have read most of the stuff that you said on threads and I was doing what xus said. But I didn't have enough wokers I guess. How many workers did you have? No matter how many workers I had on the same pollution square I didn't go away faster that 2 turns...

Have lots. You can also mandatorily borrow for undetermined time lenght some of other civs' workers. They're slow but free.
3-6 per useful city sounds enough.

I am playing on Regent and have done good as a technology broker so far. I am the seond most powerful civ in the world and am the most advance (but only slightly .) I am on the sam continent with the Chineese who are the most powerful. All the other civs arent as powerful or as advanced as us. I want to wipe out the Chineese so I can have the Continent to myself. Unfortunately the Chineese have no neighbors that could be called against them but I do . Also we are in the middle ages which is the age of the knights so the chineese special unit is there. I am the Americans and wont get mine until the modern ages. I am the first to have gunpowder but have no saltpeter to do anything with. My military is smaller than the chineese (I am a republic) I am confident that if I beat the Chineese no one else will prove a threat. Thanks in advance

Pollution - build coal plants, don't worry about it too much (unless your Lady Diedre Sky). The trick is that you should by this time have about 10-20 workers not doing anything important (ie; clearing jungle in unworkable squares or irrigating that 13th square in a size 4 city). Take these workers and press Shift-P. This will place them on pollution patrol. With the patch this should do all the work for you.

War in the Middle Age - Two key steps; Democracy and Military Tradition. Race to these techs. Be the first to Democ and keep it, it will give you a slight production advantage. As soon as you can see saltpeter you MUST secure it and horse. Try to do this as peacefully as possible and remember you only need one to start. A good suggestion is to check outlying islands and small cities on the fringes of civs (as saltpeter ofter occus in desert areas). If you see the weakest civ has some (and he doesn't know it), take it in a small quick war, one blow, preferably one turn, then sue for peace.

Once you get military tradition, use cannons and calvary to pound through your biggest competitor, use alliances and whatever you can to destroy them, don't leave one city. Plan ahead of the war and make sure that you have apppropriatly placed units for a two or three pronged massive assault.

If you get in trouble in the war; march toward the capital and destroy all the roads/rail leading to it - sue for peace - they will give it to you as you will have nullified all their luxuries and most cities will be rioting.
