I think that response was a little much, especially since the original poster seemed to be grateful for everyone's consideration.
ever heard of sarcasm?
his first 'thank you':
Thanks guys for not answering my important question!!!!!!!!!See you later, buy
Shirannybl

not: Ah, hello? No answer? No, this is a little too unfriendly for my liking.

Then my reply:
Shir: sorry, but you'll have to wait until someone comes here who knows how to do it - I dont! I can help you with Civ3, but not with Windows.....
I stated clearly that I simply do not know the answer.

another reply to it came from MummyMan:
Shirannybl, your question really wasn't related to the game so it wasn't a very high priority. Also, with only Killer and a few others answering q's it is hard to answer every question.

So instead of saying 'OK, I'll try somehwere else or just shutting up, what doesn our dear arrogant little shirannybl do:

Thanks everybody for your attention.I love you all!!! Unfortunately, my question was not about the game but even so, I thank you for the consideration of giving me an explanation.Shirannybl.

Not once - maybe he speaks poor english, maybe he was drunk - whatever), but twice! More irony and sarcasm. Do you still not understand my response??????

And as for the positive effect - that one might be a perma-gonner if I see more of this **** I (and all others who answer Qs here and in FAQ) got from Shirannybl!

FWIW

I fully understand Killer's extreme frustration with that guy.

He didn't seem to get that

(a) this is a site for civ3 not some random PC question; and
(b) the people posting answers here aren't actually being paid to do so but are doing so out of a desire to help and have no duty to do so, and he has no right to have his question answered.

Killer's response affects in no way my respect for the time he takes to answer people's questions. People who are rude and boorish don't deserve any other treatment themselves.

Re Shirannybl & 'Killer'

I very much appreciate Killer's assistance and info on the game, and I can understand his irritation if Shir. had been sarcastic with his 'thanks'.

But, it can be easy to misunderstand simple 'text' - I thought that Shir. had posted his email address earlier so perhaps it was possible that he had received assistance from people and that he was being genuine in his gratitude. (I suppose he would have thanked them by return email though).

I don't know - I think I analyse things too much :crazyeye:

1. I like that rush-buying improvements is more costly in Civ 3 (compared to Civ 2) but I think it's gone too far that way. Can you suggest how to turn this down a bit, but not to Civ 2 levels?

2. I have an idea for a unit, available after the Corporation, called Freight. It would cost X shields, and could be disbanded for 50%X. (Let's say 60 shields disbanded for 30 shields.) Is there a way to create this unit? Can I alter the disband amount?

Flavor Dave: need to check on freight, as for rushing: play around in the editor. can't tell you off the top of my hat what to do, and the 20-turn penalty is ficed I think, but there is something you can do, I believe....

OK, here it is:

I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find it ....

Do cities next to inland lakes need to build Aqueduct to grow beyond pop 6 ?

I've been put off building next to lakes by the fact that the lake's terrain is called 'coast'.

Thanks killer...I think I'll change that 4 to a 3. It's just too costly to rush build culture.

Also, I'll change the 8 shields = 1 gold. That's another little annoyance...I get to a point where I can't build anything alot of the time, because I have more than enough soldiers. With the 8-1 ratio, I build soldiers anyway. At 4-1, I'd probably go for wealth.

This is under "rules," right?

Also, to answer my OWN question from several pages ago....

In order to get your explorers to get the RR bonus, click on the "airlift" capability.

No Aqueduct needed, as long as it's fresh water. The way to check this is that if an Aqueduct CAN be built, then it's needed. You can't build it if you don't need it. Hydro Plant needs RUNNING water, so a lake isn't enough.

Regarding the question about explorers using RR; why not just disable the "all terrain as roads" and then multiply their movement by three? Then they use RR like every other unit, and they move 3x as fast as if they are on roads? Can anybody think of potential problems with this solution?

yes, mad stork, because them, if they move across mountains they are not as fast as in plains - and that is what is intended... They can outrun Modern Armour on semi-roaded mountains - that would no longer be the case in enemy territory...

they would then move 18 on roads instead of 6. Personal preference on if this is a problem or not.

There are no solutions only problems

Good Points Pygzilla and Killer!

I think Dran wants to know if an aqueduct will be needed BEFORE he builds a city there. The way to check if a 'coast' tile is fresh water or just a regular coast is to right-click on the tile. If it gives 2 food, it is fresh water. A normal coast tile (without a harbor) gives only 1 food.

I also do this sometimes when I'm not sure a tile is considered to be on a river or not (like when the river ends/starts around a mountain). If it's has a river next to it (free aqueduct) you will see 1 gold from that tile (0 if it isn't on a river), this is of course assuming the tile isn't already roaded as the road will add 1 gold.

Looking back now at the full context of the conversation, I certainly do understand your frustration, so yes, I'd say I understand fully where you were coming from in your response.

I guess its difficult sometimes to know what people are thinking when they post in such a manner. You can never tell if its a language barrier (problem with interpretation and translation) or someone intentionally trying to start a flame war.

My confusion came from seeing the posters last response (which seemed genuinely polite if you ignore the banter that came before it) and then suddenly here comes your post like a steam-roller. That's what threw me for a loop. Seemed kind of out of character for a thread to help newbies :D

Say no more, I understand fully.

Do the AI civs get a Golden Age? If so, does anybody strategize around this? I could see a couple early game scenarios unfolding ... perhaps with the Greeks as they are one of the civs with a very early UU than can kick of a GA.

Suppose you're faced with nearby Greeks, and you feel you could take a couple cities from them to pad your lead over them, gain some free cities, access to resources, whatever. But you aren't confident you could put a significant dent in their fledgling empire. If you attack, not only do you face the tough Hoplite garrisons to start with, but you also would kick off their GA, and possibly give them the shot in the arm that quickly leads to them coming after you! So, try to avoid any scrapes with them ... if they push a war, go for their non-UUs to harry their advance, right?

But let's say you're strong enough to really throw them on the ropes. In that case, wouldn't it be a *good thing* to kick off their GA? You could quickly go in and take most of their cities, at which point *let them* keep two or three ... this would mean their GA is occurring when they can get the least positive result out of it.

Is this a strategy anyone uses? It would certainly depend on whether the AI even has GAs, which I haven't been able to figure out yet. But wouldn't this be a likely strategy in multi-player games? From reading this board, it seems many players like to manage the appearance of their GA as much as possible for maximum effect. I could see multi-player games where the player who really wanted to screw with his human foes' long-term strategy would go around trying to launch GAs for others at inconvenient times ...

I one lucked out with a suicide Galley that reached an island with Greece, Egypt and the Iroquese and the Zulu - all civs with early UUS. They were stuck in jungle and mountains, so an early GA would be wasted for them. So I declared war on one of them, bought one other into the fray, then declared war on a second, bought another into it.....

All four went fighting happily ever after..... When Astronomy came, i swept their UUs away with my Knights and soon Cavalry - they all were still ancient age :D Their GAs were totally wasted - a no-production tile gives no GA bonus :D
