News: BOTM 09 Saves Available

Ok, got it running.

Here is what I did (in that order):
Uninstall BTS
Uninstall Civ IV
reboot
Install Civ IV
Patch CIV IV to 1.74
Install BTS
Patch BTS to 3.17
Install HOF 3.17.001 Mod

I did not install the unofficial Patch

Thanks anyway for the help,

I patched to 3.17 and then installed HOF 3.17. Having tried the different Vista fixes the GOTM still wouldn't launch. If I disable UAC it will. Why should this be the case? HOF 3.13 ran ok. As does 1.74. Demanding compromises on PC security to make the game run seems daft. I realise that you will mock me for using UAC, but until today it hasn't caused me any difficulties. Please review HOF 3.17 and make it more Vista friendly.

Like Caesar of Rome, after having no problems with BTOMs under the 3.13 mod (after fixing file permissions, to keep the options screen from locking) 3.17 gives me the warning, and disabling UAC appears to solve it.

Now, are any of the vista fixes going to deal with that? Folder permissions does not seem to be it, except that creator/owner category does not seem to take any changes to permissions (but that was not a problem for 3.13). The elevate application stuff doesn't want to take ... it is greyed out ... which means I need to create some other kind of adminstrator account? Any instructions on doing that ... if that is even the answer to all of this?

dV

addendum: It gets worse ... after trying to play with the file permissions and other things, something I did rendered all of my civ installs (and I have six of them now ... two each in each version) inoperable ... they would not open in any method.

Forturnately using a restore point from 24 hours ago got me back up and running ... but this might just be a lesson in leaving well enough alone ... until someone has a tested and explicit answer to this issue.

dV:

I got it running on a computer with Vista SP1 (Home Premium). The key seems to be that the main account (i.e. the one that is created during install) is not a proper admin account. When you create an admin account yourself, then you will be able to run CIV elevated without any problems. Thanks to UAC, I am asked each time whether I am sure, but that is alright (actually, I boot windows only to play CIV, and after the reboot phase, this little question does not really matter).

Since my post of 27th I changed compatibility privilege level (open file "Properties") of Civ4BeyondSword.exe to "Run this program as an administrator" (tick the box) and then reactivated UAC. Worked long enough for me to be distressed at AI progress in the game and give up. Tried again today and GOTM save loaded after a UAC window. On my PC I am the only user with the original user account with Administrator privilages running ultimate.

I have ultimate too ... you got the original user (mine is called creator/owner IIRC) account to let you elevate it? That option is greyed out for me ...:crazyeye:

Guess I will try to make a second admin account ...

Unless the trick is can't change it unless UAC is off ... ??

dV

addendum: well, got the original account to allow me to click on the run as administrator, and the 3.17 HOF mod runs ... except that the interface is now missing !! Alt I won't bring it back. City screen is pretty amusing with none of the info or controls ...

That means the mod failed to load. There will be a Python error.

You sure about that? My recollection is that I loaded BtS, loaded mod, tried to start a random game, and got no interface. I will give that another try now ... and where is it I turn on that python error tracking (logging, whatever...) again (assuming that is where you are leading me)?

dV

Well, the mod SAYS it loads, but maybe it is lying? No interface continues ...

dV

I have seen the total lack of interface often while converting HoF Mods for use on the Mac. It always indicates that there's a fatal Python error. The mod loads OK because most of the Python code doesn't execute until the game loads, but when it does try to run to generate the game screens, it fails.

You can turn on Python error logging in the .ini file. On my XP system the BtS one is at

C:\Documents and Settings\Alan\My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\Civilization IV.ini

The relevant entry is:
; Enable the logging system
LoggingEnabled = 0

Change it to:
; Enable the logging system
LoggingEnabled = 1

Relaunch BtS, load up the mod and the game, and then open the text log file - on my system it's at:

C:\Documents and Settings\Alan\My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\Logs\PythonErr.log

I don't know whether this will tell us what's wrong, but it's worth a try.

Well, we got something ... attached is the pythonerr2 log, as the other pythonerr log is empty.

I am going to recheck file permissions (since 3.17 unmodded runs fine, I assume just permission on the mod file are relevant?), if no go then reinstall (and if needed, redownload) the mod (maybe the system restore I did mucked it up?). If that does not work I'll try turning off UAC, since that worked in the begining.

The error log would need input from the HoFMod team, but, to my untutored eye, it looks as if it can't get the path info from the registry, and that does sound like a permissions issue.

Turns out that permissions on HOF 3.17 folder were all fine, except there are no permissions for the Creator Owner line, and it won't let me set any.

But I reinstalled the mod from the original installer that I downloaded, and now seems to be working fine. Maybe the mod file got corrupted in initial install or in the system restore that I did? Originally it did work with UAC off, for a while, then something mucked up and I had to do the restore.

Working fine with UAC on ... now to see how the new Vanilla mod goes.

addendum: vanilla mod (1.74.003) working after elevating the vanilla .exe to run as admin status, even with UAC on. Yea!

Will there be food in the initial site?
Will I finish in time patching and playing an epic game?

Time will tell. There I go!
