This time it's WAR! WAR! WAR! There is only one victory condition enabled... domination. You cannot win the game by any other means, so don't even bother trying. Can you survive?

Game settings:
Playing as: Pericles of Greece
Rivals: 4 AIs
Difficulty: Deity
Starting Era:
Ancient
Speed: Normal
Options: No goody huts, no random events
Victory Conditions:
Domination

Map settings:
Map: Fractal
World Wrap: Cylindrical
Mapsize: Small
Climate: Tropical
Sea level: Medium
Map latitudes: -90°S to 90°N

Pericles is Philosophical and Creative, and you start with Fishing and Hunting.

The Philosophical trait gives +100% great people birth rate and double production speed of University

The Creative trait gives +2 culture/city each turn and double production speed of Colosseum, Library and Theatre

Unique unit: Phalanx (replaces Axeman)
The Phalanx benefits from: 100% defence bonus against chariot. This compares with the Axeman which has: no directly comparable benefits.

Unique Building: Odeon (replaces Colosseum)
The odeon is a boon to happiness and culture. It gives +2 happy and +3 culture/turn in its city. And it gives an extra +1 happy from hit singles (not that anyone is going to get that far into this game, surely?). And it keeps the +1 happy per 20% culture rate of the colosseum.

Note that in this game, any espionage-culture victories will be counted as cultural victories.

Adventurer Class bonuses:
To make the game a bit more equal, you play on monarch level. The AIs keep their deity level starting units (2 settlers, 1 worker, and a small army each of archers and scouts each). But to equalize a little, you have a worker on the same tile as your settler.

To Enter the Competition:

This competition will open at 00:01 am on 18 Jan 2019, server local time (UTC-6:00). From that date and time, you'll be able to get your chosen starting save >>>here<<<.

Submit the save after your victory (or defeat) here, by 18 Feb 2019.

Here is a link to a list of the differences between Vanilla, Warlords and BtS.

Software Versions

Windows: This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Civ4 Vanilla or Warlords), patched to version 3.19, and with the BUFFY mod version 3.19.005 installed. You can download the BUFFY mod here. Players using Windows Vista or Windows 7 are encouraged to read the notes on Vista fixes here.

Macintosh: This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Civ4 Vanilla or Warlords), patched to version 3.19, and with the Mac BUFFY mod version 3.19.003 installed. You can download the Mac BUFFY mod here.

While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads.

Oh nice!
Pericles is imho one of the better leaders when it comes to early warfare. Cheap libraries and early great people is a awesome combo. Freedom to settle with goodies in outer ring is a nice bonus.
Easy to bulb math and going for construction early on, and right there you have half-price odeons with all the happines one needs. :)

Somehow I doubt that matters this time.

If there's ever a game totally not for me it must be a deity war game. I assume the AI's also know the victory condition and will not waste effort on culture, diplomacy or space.

Deity is never for me either. almost always far too difficult to keep up with the AI. But there is the adventurer save... ;)

I was excited about the Adventurer save with extra worker - but at least in the Mac save the worker is barbarian !:cry::cry: :crazyeye:

Really? Oh wow, sorry about that! I'll get that checked out asap. I'll contact privately. In the meantime, can I suggest that anyone else who wants to play the Mac adventurer save.... hold off until I check it out.

Sucks to be an oppressed minority, doesn't it. :) .

LOL, kind of :crazyeye: I thought I would get away with playing "deity" game not being a deity player - but my hopes were crushed brutally and early on  Would be much worse if the worker turned barbarian after being built for many turns - don't think it is possible, though.

I've corrected the Mac start file. Please download it again and give it a go. Apologies for the error!

When an AI is lying crushed under your elephant, it doesn't matter how fast they tech. :)

Pretty sure I won't be able to finish this if I try it out, starting so late, but I have a question. Which version of Buffy are we supposed to use? I guess .005?

The reason I ask is that Buffy .003 is mentioned on the GOTM page:
Windows players require version 3.19 of Civilization IV BtS, as well as Hof Mod version BUFFY-3.19.003, available here.

Edit: Also:
No huge deal (sorry for the pun), but I get an error when trying to view the large version of the map image
Sorry, your requested page cannot be found on the GOTM server..

Hi Pangaea, sorry about the delay replying. It should be .005 (possibly .003 for Mac users). I suspect that text on the GOTM page is hardcoded to display the same thing for every game and noone has got around to updating it ;)

BUFFY 0.003 and 0.005 will happily coexist by the way, and they don't take up much disc space, so if you want to be safe, there's no harm in installing both. If you don't have the right one, you'll know pretty quickly because the game will refuse to load, and will complain it can't find the right mod.

I'll take a look at the missing map image later today.

And by the way, you're probably aware but just in case: If you start but don't manage to finish, you can still submit your unfinished game as a retired game as long as you do it before the deadline.
