COTM104 Ottomans - Pre-game discussion

The start save for this game has been replaced to deal with a bug. If you have downloaded the save prior to 23rd March and not started the game, then you should download the new game. If you have started the game from the original save, then you should send your current save to Alanh at the email address he has posted below. He will fix the bug in your individual save. I apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Hello everyone and welcome to COTM104. This month you play as Osman of the Ottoman empire. The Ottomans benefit from the scientific and Industrious traits and start the game with the knowledge of masonry and bronze working.

The Ottoman unique unit is the Sipahi, which is an upgrade to the cavalry unit. The Sipahi are a strong offensive unit but cost 20 shields more than cavalry. In this game it is unlikely (in the author’s humble opinion) that the Sipahi will play a large part in the fastest military victories.

This game incorporates a significant mod to the English tribe. England is industrious and commercial in this game and starts with alphabet, pottery and ceremonial burial. The Man O’ War unique unit has been removed from the game completely and replaced with the Broadsword Unit. This unit in turn replaces the swordsman, but is stronger offensively. The unit has the same properties as the Persian Immortal unit, but retains the graphics of a swordsman. England will not necessarily be a factor in all games, and the modification has been made merely to give that tribe some relevance on this type of map.

This game continues to incorporate the hut popping mod which provides the chance of popping workers from huts in lieu of settlers. Note that it is still possible to pop cities from huts. Any technical or game play issues associated with this change should be reported to the GOTM staff immediately.

Here are the game parameters:

Civilization: Ottomans
Difficulty: Regent
Map size: 130(X) X 130(Y) - large
Map topology: Cylindrical Pangea (x-wrap on)
Rivals: 15 pre-selected opponents
Barbarians: Restless
Victory conditions: All enabled

Below is a picture of your start location.

Sorry to post here after starting the game, but I wonder if the new Broadsword Unit has not been fully registered, as I have got the following error message; or maybe it is another problem? Either way, my game just keeps crashing C3C now. (NB: I have restarted the game both from a save made the turn before, and its prior autosave, and done both after rebooting the computer too, but to no avail): Missing entry in "text\PediaIcons.txt": ANIMNAME_

Ditch,

Thank you - I have checked and you are correct. The save game was generated from a version of the biq that did not have a civilopedia entry for broadsword. Just a stupid mistake.

Please stop playing. I need to fix the issue and replace the save game.
We may be able to repair the save games that have been started.

Please just wait 24 hours for further instruction.

The starting save has been replaced, so if you have not yet started the game, please download the start save again.

If you have started playing the game please email your latest save to me at thealanh@me.com. I think I can edit them to add the missing civilopedia entry.

Important question to start things off... will the broadswordsman have the ability to enslave like the man-o-war? Also his strength of 4/2/1 will be a game changer in that I don't think I want to get in a war with England until I have MI. If the Persians are also in this game it could be a bloodbath at the start.

Industrious means an extra shield for England but is it 1 per tile, when does it kick in, and do they get it no matter what government they are in?
Commercial means an extra gold, but again I need a refresh in what that means.

I would imagine England is going to be a beast the first half of the game.

15 AI is going to mean a crowded map and probably a fast tech pace.

Another bare starting area. A move seems to be in order but where? Perhaps wast a worker move and climb the mountain either 1W or 1S.

@greatbeyond

The broadsword is identical to an Immortal. This means it is a swordsman with 4/2/1 ability instead of 3/2/1 ability and starts a golden age on killing an opposing unit for the first time.
If you look at the game parameters then you will see that this is a regent level game on a large Pangea, and should give you enough information to answer your own questions.

@Alanh

Thanks for responding to my error so quickly. If people only knew the extent to which we rely on your expertise and dedication. :thanx:

RE: Commercial and Industrious traits
All I find in the reference is that Industrious means extra shields in larger cities.
Commercial means extra commerce. What I was looking for was a quantification of what this means as I don't ever remember seeing this explained anywhere in detail.

I can not save new starting save file. It's wrong file type. Please checck it again. Also where is the wrong ?, which file ? (PediaIcons.txt or other ?). if anybody write here, my be we can correct it.

I can't download it either. I have asked Alan to investigate.

Someone changed some key server settings, and a lot of PHP scripts stopped working. I think I have fixed them now, but please report anything you see on the GOTM server that looks wrong.

The scenario file for Game of the Month #104, the Ottomans seems to be bugged for me. I was having a great game. I made it to 250 BC and then I get this error message. Nothing I have tried seems to help. Any suggestions are appreciated. I would like to be able to complete this scenario. It is certainly a challenging one.

I suspect that the error is related to the changes that were made to the English civ, but I am really clueless in this regard and it is just a guess. Here is the error message I receive at the end of the 250 BC turn:

Spoilers removed.

I will send you my current save for editing.

Thank you, AlanH!

So I assume you haven't read the earlier posts in this thread, or the notice at the top of the first post?

Please read my message #4 above. You can send me your current save for editing.

PS. Please remove your spoiler screenshots. This is a pregame thread!

Save file emailed to thealanh@me.com . And I'm sorry that I didn't go to the trouble to read through the thread before posting. Aslo, thank you for your attention to this and for your rapid response to my post.
