GOTM 115 Pre-Game Discussion!

Please Note: This is the Civ3 PTW Game of the Month. It MUST be played using version 1.27f of Civ3 PTW, the last version. If you installed Civ3 Complete, the default game executable is Civ3 Conquests, but you do have access to the Civ3 PTW executable. You may have to navigate into the Civ3PTW directory to start it.

Last time we played Germany in the GOTM series, 'W' was still in office! They are way past due. You get a small Pangaea map with 6 AI opponents to demonstrate you skills against. And while the barbarians are Sedentary, you may find they get in the way. Good Luck!

The saves are available >>here<< right now, Aug 5th. You will have one month to play.

Civilization: Germany
Rivals: 6 preset
Barbarians: Sedentary
Difficulty: Emperor
Land Form: Pangaea, 70% ocean, Small map.
Geology: 4 billion years old, Normal, Temperate

If I get the time, I'll go for diplo, unless the surrounding area is very dry.

I'm curious about the tile 2NE. It should be a flood plain, considering the flow of the river, but it looks like coast.

Good luck.

I'm inclined to settle in place but . . . given our position on the map, is it possible that we've been banished to a small island? I don't like seeing coast to the east when I'm on the far western edge of the board. Of course it could wrap around but I am suspicious (and paranoid) . . .

Well, its another space race for me! :D

Steve says he's put barbs in the way. That could mean (a) we are on an island and the only sensible crossing to the mainland is past a 1-tile island with a barb camp, or (b) we are on a peninsula, with the isthmus guarded by more than one camp. Conquest bonus #1 says that galleys would help with the problem, suggesting (a). Bonus #3 says that we need worry about early contact with aggressors, suggesting (b). I'm inclined to go with the peninsula theory, as (1) galleys can still be of use in that situation, (2) if this is a small 70% map there just shouldn't be room for a us to sit on the end of an archipelago in one corner, and (3) 2 extra spears is not much of a bonus if we are alone on an island with only sedentary barbs for company.

Hello, folks :)

After a long, long, long time out of competitions i've found my old civ3 files and reinstalled the game, so i'm going to try this one. As i'm stuck at work with no holidays in sight, a small map should be fine to provide a few distraction without being too time consuming.

I'm going to trust Beetle's ability to predict our game master's intentions and follow his guidelines, so i'll have someone to blame if i screw up the game :D Just a point: the two spears as a conquest bonus may also mean that there will be barb units roaming near our starting location, so i think i will build up a few units early on. No settler gambit this time, having workers slaughtered and improvement pillaged in the early game is really a curse.

Besides that, i think it will be business as usual for me: find a good location (not sure if settling in place is the best thing), build a ring of productive cities, seize luxuries if they're there, then toss military units like crazy and take over the world.

I'm quite rusty in Civ3, so don't expect anything exceptional unless i'm extremely good at rust polishing :) Let's see if i can pull out at least a bronze on this.

I can't say anything about the game because I'm already playing, but . .

Welcome back!! :eekdance::band::eekdance:

It's always great to have more people in the GOTM! Your consolation prize is that you probably can't do worse than me. I wouldn't mind if you gave it a shot though. :D

hi tricky! :wavey: welcome back.
i was able to return for this game as well. i would have prefered the Deity game, but with so little time at hands, i have to play in few sessions whatever is on the boards and whenever it proves possible to play at all.
so it did over this weekend, and i finished. if steve could bring the spoilers up, i might even remember something about the game to post about. :groucho: :D

tR1cKy is back, templar is back :goodjob: -- I'll give this a try, too. Haven't played one in a long time. Germany is one of my old favorites, and my hands are itching to try a 20K again. The position looks ok for that.

(I started and I'm even taking notes, so no matter when the spoilers are out, you'll get some details about my game in any case.)
