Get the granary before growing to three and put the chop in the first settler.

This is a simple, but interesting strategy. Obvious to veterans, I suppose. Thanks, klarius. Makes good use of the immediate 2-food/2-shield to build the first mine anywhere.

Makes me think that the first couple moves aren't so critical, if we're going to have an early granary, so wouldn't it make sense to settle where there might be a better three-ring. In place looks like there won't be any place to settle toward the gold.

My question for you klarius is how do you envision your overall conquest stategy? It seems that waiting for Berzerks is a long haul especially without a scientific trait.

How to do the conquest will depend on a lot of things, like neighbours close, resources available ...
But Berzerks will never play a major role. The problem is not that they would be too late, but they are just overprized.

I don't think the idea of to wait with chopping the game untill the granary is ready is that good. It just a way to have more shields at the expens of more food. To me the food is more important.

Start building the granary and chopping the game and after finishing the granary build a few workers to get the optimal citysize for settler production.

nice predator handycap.

What do Predators build after Invention when they got no Iron?
Archers or longbows?
I would think the berserker completely replaces the longbow. Thus without iron you just build archers.

Pretty harsh really. I never really worry about not having iron (oh unless fighting strong defenders in the ancient age), because I consider the longbow to be the equal of the mace. But no longbows and no maces... ouch.

Yep looks like you better build up horsies quick, to conquer that iron before our victims gain muskets or more.

You also lose commerce unless you road the game forest, which is twice as expensive as roading the game grasslands after the chop. Still, I agree that mining one or two BGs is often more urgent than chopping a game forest.

I did some calculations on yours and klarius' openings and came up with the following. After 30 turns, the best I could do with each was:

Redbad
T4: scout
T19: granary
T22: worker2
T29: settler2
T29 or T30: RCP3 Town2 depending whether it's two or three tiles away
T30: 3 shields toward next product and 16 bushels of wheat toward pop3

klarius
T4: scout
T18: granary
T22: settler2
T24 or 25: RCP3 Town2 depending whether it's two or three tiles away
T26: warrior1
T29: worker2
T30: 3 shields toward next product and 13 bushels of wheat toward pop3

Primary differences:
Redbad's earlier worker2 has the second town connected immediately.
klarius' earlier settler2 settles 5 turns sooner, is not limited by the river as to location of settlement because he moved 1 turn at a time anyway, and is protected much sooner by earlier warrior1.

Interesting to note is that chopping the forest actually slowed the granary by one turn, and that's even after I optimized it to speed up Redbad's granary to beat the growth to pop3.

I did not do any calculations on gold coins, but no doubt Redbad has the early edge with the earlier worker2 and earlier roads, but then klarius gets some back with the earlier Town2. How much of a difference depends partly on where Town2 is located relative to the game tile and the bg tiles.

count me in for the predator coquest Challenge.

Although I certainly wont be much competition.

I'm joining the predator conquest challenge. RL issues are solved for the most part so i'll have the time to play this GotM. See ya in the spoiler threads!

EDIT: Wait... it's not said :D
