Next Civ game most likely will be a fantasy game

I've been waiting ten years for 'Ancient Civilizations' going from 4000 B.C. to maybe 200 A.D. or maybe the middle ages.

You're not alone, but with Old World having just come out, a Civ-version would look too much like playing 'catch-up' for the same historical period. Not likely to happen, outside of the Modding community.

Old world feels kinda medieval to me. I want a 'Sumerians, Babylonians, Akkadians, Minoans', etc, kinda game.

I know, there's overlap. But I think Firaxis could do a good job.

That may be the most brilliant summary of everything wrong with BE that I've ever heard. Good sci-fi needs good worldbuilding to pull you into the setting, and BE thought it could be lazy and clever at the same time by leaving everything vague. A little vagueness can add mystery to the setting; too much vagueness leaves you with nothing to sink your teeth into. BE was decidedly in the latter category.

True, but I still want Beyond Earth 2.

Just because many mistakes were made, doesn't mean they can't be corrected in a second installment.

Besides, BE had a LOT of good things; if it didn't, I wouldn't be asking for a proper sequel (nor would many others around here, I know they are around).

No game is ever Completely Bad, but about BE I'd have to quote Ambrose Bierce's joke about the Brick Airplane:

"All the details are correct, he only problems are Basic and Fundamental."

Unlikely any.

Friaxis doesn't like to hype compete with itself. My guess is they let this game come out and breathe a little before they make any more announcements. .

Actually 2K Games has stated that this year there will be "several" new announcements of new Firaxis titles, one of them being in August which was revealed to be the new Marvel Xcom.

I don't know what several is in market-speak, but it would probably mean 1-2 more announcements this year. My personal bet is Civ VII announcement in october, with release in may/june.

Old World is set solidly in Antiquity and all playable civilizations are from that period.

The last time Firaxis made good original content was...never. I'd rather they stick to the historical script.

Not sure, not going to speculate until definitive news comes out.
Yeah, but speculating is fun.

I think that could be cool but honestly I'd rather them just work on improving the AI on the games they already have by starting to work on Civ 6 again (or at least work on Civ 7 earlier so they have more time to prefect it) instead of doing this. I think BE and any other spinoff would be better left for modders to make for regular series ones.

Curious about the updates the official Civgame Instagram has been doing for couple of weeks now, the icon turned to Civ V scout and they put highlights Power and Knowledge to the account, and now every few days there has been a painting of a world wonder and some mysterious talk about wanderlust.

Most of the wonder art are from Civ V but some are from the obscure CivWorld facebook-game.

There is still Firaxis announcement/announcements for this year, the new franchise Marvel Midnight suns is one and Xcom3 is probably not coming, so that leaves imho Civ 7 most likely.

My bet is october announcement with release for may. :smoke:

Midnight Suns looks interesting :)
Very different from Civ.

Firaxis is branching out.
Good for them.

I mean they gotta be getting tired of fixing Civ VI bugs, am I right? ;)

You mean dodging fixing Civ VI bugs, don't you?

I'm watching Firaxis Twitch showing off Midnight Suns gameplay.

It really is gorgeous.
I can see why Firaxis are so excited about it.

Now that Firaxis+2K can see the benefit of partnering for content (like with Marvel/Disney) perhaps a SMAC 2 might no longer be beyond the realm of possibility.

Firaxis seeing the benefit was never the problem. You have to convince EA of the benefit. So enjoy your SMAC2 with lootboxes and "live service model." :mischief:

Firaxis is so set in their ways, that I’m pretty sure that they are releasing a game based on civ6 - and it’s most likely colonization. After that failure, we will get civ7 - with no fantasy elements outside of DLC.

I hope not.

Colonization was the one Civ game I absolutely hated. I felt ripped off.

Let's be honest, Firaxis have had much better reception from their space Civ entries, than Colonization.
