The PS3 will have games. There's still a wealth of high-profile exclusives lined up for the PS3, many more than the Xbox 360. After Gears of War was out of its system, the 360 doesn't have a whole lot left to offer. And, let's face it, although GoW was great for about 10 hours, its short single player and rapidly boring multi player will catch up with it eventually.

And once supply issues are resolved, it will start to pick up steam and the Xbox 360 won't be able to gain much ground. They had a one year head start, but they won't be lengthening their lead, especially since their system is actually just as expensive as the PS3. Games are already getting bigger, and very soon, most games will be released in a DVD format, which costs more money because it could have two or even three discs for a particular game, as well as being released in an HD-DVD format, which will be cheaper. This will spur interest in the HD-DVD player add-on, and thus people will begin to realize that the PS3 is (if you're playing HD) the better value.

Also, as HD-TV's become much, much, much cheaper, the HD capabilities of the PS3 (i.e., HDMI!), will begin to look more and more attractive.

It doesnt matter if they have people making good games for them. They have to sell them.

But i dont want to the system fail. I just dont think it will do well IMO.

So far the overwhelming majority has been choosing the Wii.

In my opinion, the Wii is on a whole 'nother level when it comes to the console wars, because there is less competition between the Wii and the Xbox or PS3, notwithstanding availability in the first few months.

Wii is out of stock everywhere here and the wait lists are long...

Wii Out Sells PS3 By Over 2-1

Wii outproduces and outstocks PS3 by over 3-1...

EDIT: And the fact that you linked to CNN.com kind of nullifies your point.

Nah PS3 will gain in popularity. After seeing one in action at my friends house I understand now what Sony's strategy is. The only reason Wii is doing great right now is maybe more units were on the street than Sony's?

I agree with TheLoneMan's assessment wrt to the HD-DVD development.

NexGen Wars.com is cool, but anybody with any statistics background will be able to see how flawed their data-intake method is.

As said in the article though, PS3 did not meet Sony's own forecasted sales results.

Sony (Charts) sold just 195,000 PS3 units in its first 13 days on shelves, according to analysts quoting preliminary numbers from The NPD Group, which tracks video game sales. That's well short of the 400,000 the company had projected.

Don't trust the site?

Over 3 times as many.

That certainly helps, and I think was a blunder on Sony's part.

IMHO PS3 is too expensive for the common man. The more you sell thems consoles the more you can sell games. If Sony bleeds for every console sold even when they're so expensive they'd better sell a lot of games for those consoles to break even.

Moff Jerjerrod, is there any chance you could explain that statement a little further? I've also tried the PS3, and - while it's by no means a BAD system - it simply doesn't justify its price at the moment. A year from now, maybe, but not currently. (For that matter, the 360 wasn't worth $400 a year ago either.) But if you don't mind, why is it going to gain in popularity? The only thing I see going for this system right now is its name (and lots of unsubstantiated hype).

I'd also love to know what Sony's "strategy" is, because right now it looks like they're pissing away what appeared to be an insurmountable lead in the console wars.

While it's a fallacious argument to assume that the Wii is better than the PS3 because it's selling faster, it's equally fallacious to spin that around and somehow imply that the ONLY reason the Wii is popular is because it has more units out. As I said on the previous page, although I'm somewhat skeptical about the long-term prospects of the Wii, clearly people want this system now and are buying it as fast as it can be produced - which is by no means a trivial fact. The Wii has been out for less than a month, and it's already sold almost a million units in the US (counting worldwide sales, it's close to 1.5 million). Those sale figures shatter those for both the 360 last year and the current PS3 (which both sold roughly 400,000 units in their first month of existance). Now you can argue that both the 360 and PS3 suffered from massive shortages in their early months (which is true), but that doesn't change the fact that the Wii is being produced in mass numbers, AND being SOLD in mass quantities. It's one thing to make systems, quite another to sell them.

I know many of you seem to believe that the PS3 will take off at some point, and that's certainly possible, but the reality is that by the end of this year, there will be roughly 10 million 360s, 4 million Wiis, and less than 1 million (probably 600-700 thousand) PS3s on the market. Given the huge development costs associated with Sony's new monster, are developers going to be able to sell enough games to make a profit on the PS3? We'll see, but I think that's going to become a major, major issue in 2007. If the other systems have 10-20 times the installed base of the PS3, it's going to be an uphill battle this generation for Sony.

Current analysts project around 900,000 for the PS3, 2,500,000 for the Wii, and a shitload for the Xbox 360 =P.

Also, the reason I believe the PS3 will gain popularity is that nobody can even comprehend the true capabilities of the Cell Broadband Engine... launch games looked like crap, but within the next year or two it will be blowing other games out of the water.

I saw what the system is capable of and that's just at 720p (EA sports fight night and that shooter that's out). Most games right now don't take advantage of the 1080p capabilities of the system so can you imagine how impressive they will be?

You know why I made that statement? Take a good look at your fellow human beings the way they camp out for nights on end living in piss and squalor all so that they can get their hands on a system before Christmas and then ask me again why I'm argueing the Wii is doing better. Simple math and simple greed. Simply analysing the here and now.

We'll see what the future brings but my prediction is the North american market will stick to the xbox and maybe even the wii for sometime until and unless the ps3 gets more software out. Japan will belt out titles for the PS3 and thankfully the system is region free wrt to games. At least I can take advantage of that and if one is inclined to appreciate Asian game philosophy as opposed to Western game philosophy then where's the harm?

XBOX 360 premium system

20gb hardrive
1080i
ethernet cable (not wifi)

PS3 premium system
60gb hardrive
internet browser
wifi
1080p
2 hdmi outputs
blu ray (dvd@50gb data storage)

Check out ebgames for all the specs. By the time you spend the money to get an xbox to be equal to the ps3 sans 1080p cabality because it's just not possible on an xbox your spending at least 600.

Cell Broadband Engine?

The allegedly breakthrough processor in the PlayStation 3.

Only time will tell if it will live up to the hype (though I have no doubts that it will produce games much more advanced than the ones on the 360.

Better hardware doesn't really mean better games. Some old games are still better in terms of gameplay and content than many todays "advanced games".

Very true, Rheinmetall. The PS2 had the weakest hardware of the last console cycle (significantly so) and yet I think everyone would agree that most of the best games ended up on that platform. There really is no direct corellation between good hardware and good games; it's up to what developers are able to create with it.

Does anyone else find it amusing that those most fervently defending the PS3 want to talk endlessly about its hardware, or how many pixels it can display on HD TVs? Instead of, you know, GAMES?
