NiNES: A Broken Galaxy

OOC: I can name most of the references but it's still a synthesis so I'll hold my peace.

Orders sometime in the next 12 hours.

Meh I just used the one word, been thinking how to make a bio-machinist name of some kind for an hour, going through all forms of languages and latin. I finally gave up, probably should have used some kind of Jehuty and wanderung panzer combination with some gears and then bastardizing the name thru a generator of sort.

Be nice now Symph, it's a step in the right direction, you should be encouraging. :nono: ;)

Background of Capella updated per request. 20h to deadline with 6/9 orders in. :scan:

Description: Peace through Strength, Might makes Right, these are phrases you would hear in The Patriotlands. When the Scourge hit their system, the local Government seized power through the Military, and became the Absolute rulers. The weak were culled and thrown into mass graves in order to survive. Patriotism and Militarism were drilled into the people, to not worship Power and Strenght and the State was to be killed and forgotten. The Government quickly took over their area, and with a fiercely loyal people crushed the rest of the planet into submission. It was a tale of Patriarchs and Patriots, and under this new Government women were relegated to sex slaves and House Servants. The people began worshiping a pantheon of all-male(even though some were female on Earth) Pantheon of War-Gods. Kids were taught that the Gods, the Father-General, and Strength were to be respected....and feared.

Her real name was Shannon. But because she was the Lovely Lady, ruler of the Magistracy - both de facto and de jure they had given her a new name in keeping with her status.

Any other culture would probably have considered the name a mockery, and yes it was a joke amongst the Fugles (those who served in the lower ranks) that the name was given by them to the "stupid" Pretties. The joke was still on the Fugles, though. Some ancient fellow once said, "A rose by an other name smells just as sweet" And was just as thorny Shannon thought. The Magistracy's history was frought with anger and sorrow. The fact of the matter was the entertainment industry on Capella didn't just start by itself.

Many of the original settlers of Capella were merely farmers and vagrants who travelled out the 42 light years from Terra to leave the life there. However, that all changed. A conglomerate owner whose name has disappeared in the mists of time illegally bought over the land all over the system and established entertainment centres. His name may have been forgotten, but the company's name has been used eversince to scare little children who were naughty.

Eskimo Rye.

Long story cut short, the Eskimo Rye company exploited poor people from other systems and marketed Capella as a centre for pleasure and entertainment. Ironically, it was this cruel trade that enabled the flowering of medical knowledge in the system. Eskimo Rye brought doctors in to man the variety of hospitals and ended up funding research facilities to keep the best doctors on-system. The trade may have been cruel, but sick entertainers were bad for business.

Then the Scourge came.

Capella wasn't that badly affected by the Scourge, the doctors tried their best to fight it and succeeded to a degree (not everyone was decimated) - but the flow of tourists dried up, and with it the money they brought. The Capellan economy collapsed, and the Scourge took an indirect victim. In the next seven years, out-of-work entertainers and service providers fell on their bosses differentiating them by the fact (belief?) that Eskimo Rye bosses were ugly. What the Scourge didn't finish to Capella, the civil war did. Soon, the uglies (now called Fugles) were either dead or in servitude.

Which is the way it should be Shannon smiled. She remembered meeting with the last of the Fugle's resistance leader. Ricky Yosemite was his name, and before she killed him he had said, "You *****! You're nothing more than that stripper. That Lovely Lady Pokeahotass. Nothing more." And he spat. Blood.

Like an ancient emperor of times past, Shannon.. no, Pokeahotass took the name to keep her feet on the ground, and to remind her of what she once was.

OOC: And someone thinks I'm mocking. Uncreative people..

Where is your weak trait? I cant find it......

Fanatically Agressive....

I don't know. That is something like a flaw and a good thing at the same time...

Depends on the Great Lord Niklas though (note blatant attempt at sucking up)

Well its hardly less damaging than Clerics "Harsh homeworld" negative traits - "oh noes, I have to pay 40 PP at some point in the game, but only if I want to".

Incidentally, no, I am not a radical christian republican. (Unless I happen to be "Bill O'Reily", as someone seems to think.)

I simply do not have the time and thus Intergalactic Coporation is now free.

OOC: Best laugh I've had all day.

Anyway, pushing my statement back some; headache, need sleep, write orders when I wake up. You'll get a budget and some directions if nothing else at all.

@Swiss: Great to have you in, glad you could make it! :)

I don't know. That is something like a flaw and a good thing at the same time...
Depends on how I enterpret it in game. Never being able to retreat, ever, is going to hurt. Not to mention there's the intangible IC negative effect of how they will be treated by other factions. ;)

Depends on the Great Lord Niklas though (note blatant attempt at sucking up)
Noted.

Well its hardly less damaging than Clerics "Harsh homeworld" negative traits - "oh noes, I have to pay 40 PP at some point in the game, but only if I want to".
If it was just "at some point", then yes it would be a rather silly negative. But the fact that it is the very first PP payed into redevelopment ever will seriously harm early growth, which will have an exponential effect. If you remember our roots: Compare it to having your first settler in Civ3 delayed by another 10 turns. Hurts big time.

That said, yes different traits, both positive and negative, are of different magnitudes. I try to balance that out though, good for bad.

I simply do not have the time and thus Intergalactic Coporation is now free.
Too bad. I will not pull it out at this point, which means it seems there will be an NPC after all. For a while anyway, until someone decides to pick it up. Since the background and traits are rather non-descript and generic, it should be possible to play it in just about any way, making it your own.

10 h to deadline, 7/9 orders in. :scan:

Hey I made it so I'd have to pay an increased rate for all planets and all R-levels. Niklas modified it.

Deadline has passed, and I'm still missing two sets of orders. I find this utterly incredulous. It certainly doesn't do wonders for my happiness, that's for sure. Since I don't want to NPC people, I will wait for these orders for a while longer, this once. But if this happens again, there will be penalties.

Just bank their production.

OOC: Really short orders sent. Sorry for being late, but I'm not really in the mood to hear anything about it since this is small consolation for missing classes.

Silver Lining, As Usual
Private Domini's bout of insanity had not delayed the proper space launches noticeably. But it became a good warning of the dangers of being alone in virtually infinite space. He had been rushed to sickbay, and from there to a mental hospital, and five days later, the neuroscientists had identified a set of pathways likely associated with space insanity under some conditions. A somewhat hurried investigation revealed that all of the astronauts in line for launch would not develop such neuroses.

The Beat Goes On
Benalia II was the only planet in Benalia that still functioned after the Scourge. Benalia I had never been more than a burning dirtball with a research station, and had simply shut down. Benalia III was toxic but rich, had been worked by machines with occasional supervision, and had collapsed quickly. With chaos ravaging everything, the asteroid belt had quickly ceased to be a safe location as belt objects smashed into drones and vice versa. Benalia IV, the supergiant? Let's not talk about that. Benalia V, a gas giant, had perpetual fires in its upper atmosphere now, these having developed from the burnoff and uncontrolled reactions of gas harvester satellites. And finally, Benalia VI and VII, frozen dirtballs, had more or less intact machinery due to their isolation and low gravity, but it was extremely impractical to begin mining either of them at the moment.

President Jonathan Domini had had an ambitious plan to have Benalia II in working order again within one year. It meant that there would be little surplus, true, but the Emergents had gone poorer for years after the Scourge, trying to get their sole planet reactivated, and would well support a time that was slightly better.

Now three months had gone. The President had trusted to luck and it had held up once already. A number of large minirep (mining and reprocessing) modules which had been disabled by short bursts of destruction turned out not to be scrapmetal after all: They were modular, and about half of them were now functioning.

With minirep modules in the deep, it was far easier to acquire the final elements for the last phase of Benalia II's reconstruction. The President smiled, and tried to think of a good way to spin the fact that his plan had been impossible and this stroke of luck would only help actual developments come up to speed with the plan again... well, he would have to trust to luck again. Wasn't there a saying that it worked better that way? And besides, his subconscious would be working on it.

OOC: Can you add player names outside the spoilers so I can ctrlF for them?

Really short orders sent.
Thanks for that. And I got some that were shorter. ;)
Can you add player names outside the spoilers so I can ctrlF for them?
Sure, I'll do that when I update the stats.

I won't complete the update tonight, will do the last stretches tomorrow morning. Things have actually gone faster than I thought, but other things have come in between today. That means that this once the deadline will be extended 13 hours, to Friday 9AM GMT. For future updates (and for the deadline tomorrow morning) if someone doesn't send orders I will take the advise given and simply bank production. This means missing orders won't be disastrous, but will still be felt. But since the first update can possibly have an exponential effect, I really don't want to do that this time. Still missing one set of orders, please make an effort. And if some lurker wants to grab and send orders for Intergalactic, please do.
